Book excerpt: Cradle of northern Europe's later urban and industrial pre-eminence, medieval Flanders was a region of immense political and economic importance -- and already, as so often later, the battleground of foreign powers. Yet this book is, remarkably, the first comprehensive modern history of the region. Within the framework of a clear political narrative, it presents a vivid portrait of medieval Flemish life that will be essential reading for the medievalist -- and a boon for the many visitors to Bruges and Ghent eager for a better understanding of what they see.

Book An Economic History of Residential Building in Belgium Between 1890 and 1961

Download or read book An Economic History of Residential Building in Belgium Between 1890 and 1961 written by Erik Buyst and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study two questions are fundamental: how many houses were constructed annually in Belgium and what factors determined its development? Answering the first question required extensive archival research as official figures appeared to be non-existent or of a doubtful quality. in the second part, housing construction is related to demographic factors, real income, interest rates, inflation, building costs and rents. Several aspects of the industry, including structure, labour and materials supplies, investment, technical change and efficiency are also thoroughly investigated. Finally, the author examines Belgian housing policy and its impact on residential building.

Book Law Marriage and Society in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book Law Marriage and Society in the Later Middle Ages written by Charles Donahue, Jr. and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-17 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of marriage litigation (with some reference to sexual offenses) in the archiepiscopal court of York (1300–1500) and the episcopal courts of Ely (1374–1381), Paris (1384–1387), Cambrai (1438–1453), and Brussels (1448–1459). All these courts were, for the most part, correctly applying the late medieval canon law of marriage, but statistical analysis of the cases and results confirms that there were substantial differences both in the types of cases the courts heard and the results they reached. Marriages in England in the later middle ages were often under the control of the parties to the marriage, whereas those in northern France and southern Netherlands were often under the control of the parties' families and social superiors. Within this broad generalization the book brings to light patterns of late medieval men and women manipulating each other and the courts to produce extraordinarily varied results.

Book Silver Empowerment

Download or read book Silver Empowerment written by Jasper De Witte and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silver empowerment is a valuable paradigm to improve care and support systems for older persons. It aims to counteract the dominant image of ageing, which is all too often one of decline, dependency and vulnerability, and rather sees ageing and the ageing population as a challenge that opens up new opportunities. By focusing on the strengths and connections of older persons, silver empowerment strives for an inclusive, age-friendly society that will allow everyone to grow old with dignity and meaning. In this book, leading academics from a variety of disciplines discuss ways to enhance the empowerment of older persons in practice. Covering a wide range of topics such as resilience, loneliness, community-based care, the interplay between formal and informal care, the inclusion of older persons’ perspectives in research and care, and empowering policy, Silver Empowerment is of interest to academics, policy makers and practitioners interested in empowerment and care and support systems for older persons.
