Book Broken Object

Download or read book Broken Object written by Chérissa Iradukunda and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this book are dear to me. They represent a part of my life that I have had to live and deal with. We are a broken object. We are all broken in different ways. Some of us in a small piece, some in a big piece, and some in several pieces all over. As the author of this book, I was looking for those pieces I had lost, trying to puzzle over where they belonged and where they should be. It felt like I was picking up pieces of broken glass: it cut me every time I picked up one of the pieces. In the end, though, I found a way to merge them with a little bit of gold.

Book Broken Bodies Places and Objects

Download or read book Broken Bodies Places and Objects written by Anna Sörman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Bodies, Places and Objects demonstrates the breadth of fragmentation and fragment use in prehistory and history and provides an up-to-date insight into current archaeological thinking around the topic. A seal broken and shared by two trade parties, dog jaws accompanying the dead in Mesolithic burials, fragments of ancient warships commodified as souvenirs, parts of an ancient dynastic throne split up between different colonial collections... Pieces of the past are everywhere around us. Fragments have a special potential precisely because of their incomplete format – as a new matter that can reference its original whole but can also live on with new, unrelated meanings. Deliberate breakage of bodies, places and objects for the use of fragments has been attested from all time periods in the past. It has now been over 20 years since John Chapman’s major publication introducing fragmentation studies, and the topic is more present than ever in archaeology. This volume offers the first European-wide review of the concept of fragmentation, collecting case studies from the Neolithic to Modernity and extending the ideas of fragmentation theory in new directions. The book is written for scholars and students in archaeology, but it is also relevant for neighbouring fields with an interest in material culture, such as anthropology, history, cultural heritage studies, museology, art and architecture.

Book The Truth of Broken Symbols

Download or read book The Truth of Broken Symbols written by Robert C. Neville and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a cross-cultural analysis of how religious symbols function from a theological and philosophical perspective. Showing how religious symbols can be true in various qualified senses, Neville presents a theory of religious symbolism in the American pragmatic tradition extending and elaborating Tillich's claim that religious symbols participate in the divine realities to which they refer and yet must be broken in order not to be idolatrous or demonic. The Truth of Broken Symbols offers a theory of religious symbolism treating reference, meaning, and interpretation, and discussing different functions of religious symbols in theological, practical, and devotional contexts. It shows that religious symbols are to be properly understood as true or false and that symbol-systems such as myths, theologies, or liturgical symbols are to be used to engage divine realities while internally exhibiting semiotic structures of reference, meaning, and interpretation.

Now a young woman, her happy life is turned upside down when a tragic death of a close relative opens a Pandora’s box of trouble. She finds herself caught in the middle of fierce conflict as the family's strength is put to the test and the elders' power challenged. For generations the elders have controlled with firm, unyielding hands, expecting them to live as dictated, but times have changed. Facing rebellion and division, the elders are forced to come to terms with their smothering love and domination to witness the fatal results in their children. No one is safe from the secrets or the pain unleashed, and no one is prepared for the destruction to come. Meanwhile, an unseen entity watches and guides them as a horrible chain of events sends their lives out of control. Will love and blood ties be enough to save them from themselves? Or will they need something, or someone, more powerful?

Book Sorcery for Beginners

Book excerpt: Five-hundred years ago, sorcery began to fade from the world. As technology prevailed, combustion engines and computers replaced enchanted plows and spell books. Real magicians were hunted almost to extinction. Science became the primary system of belief, and the secrets of spell-casting were forgotten. That is ... until now. Sorcery for Beginners is no fantasy or fairy tale. Written by arcane arts preservationist and elite mage Euphemia Whitmore (along with her ordinary civilian aide Matt Harry), this book is a how-to manual for returning magic to an uninspired world. It's also the story of Owen Macready, a seemingly average 13-year-old who finds himself drawn into a centuries-long war when he uses sorcery to take on a school bully. Owen's spell casting attracts the attention of a ruthless millionaire and a secret society of anti-magic mercenaries, all of whom wish to use Sorcery for Beginners to alter the course of world history forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author defines and analyzes the new type of theatricalperspective invented by Samuel Beckett. She begins with an overview of thechanges of the definition of twentieth century-knowledge (e.g, art, science, philosophy, and psychology) then discusses the concepts of time, space, andmovement which underlie Beckett's notion and use of perspective in the theater. The Broken Window shows how Beckett translates a number of twentieth-centuryesthetic and philosophical concerns - the impossibility of separating subjectand object, the indeterminacy of time and space, the inevitability of movementand change - into specific dramatic techniques and traces their evolutionthrough close textual analyses of six plays. Hale is the first critic to define Beckett's theatricaltechniques in terms of the notion of perspective and to link them to similarinnovations in the plastic arts. In addition, no critic has so exhaustivelyelaborated Beckett's premises of indeterminacy, the inevitability ofperception, and the breakdown of the subject/object relationship.
