Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout life, everyone has opportunities to experience some form and depth of love and romance, and most people have experienced, at one time or another, a broken heart. Love, Romance, and the Broken Heart is intended to be a deep expression of feelings that emanate from the heart of every human being and is also intended to illustrate the fragility of love in its human form. Love, Romance, and the Broken Heart is an outpouring of the soul, a probing of the mind, and an exploration of human expression. The poems in this book were the culmination of the author’s observations of the deep emotional crevasses folks traverse when going through a divorce, from the moment love begins through the broken hearts which often bring an end to that relationship. Many poems in this book explore the vast array of deep thoughts and introspection that accompany that experience.

Download or read book Leopardi written by Giacomo Leopardi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These translations of the major poems of Giacomo Leopardi (1798--1837) render into modern English verse the work of a writer who is widely regarded as the greatest lyric poet in the Italian literary tradition. In spite of this reputation, and in spite of a number of nineteenth-and twentieth-century translations, Leopardi's poems have never "come over" into English in such a way as to guarantee their author a recognition comparable to that of other great European Romantic poets. By catching something of Leopardi's cadences and tonality in a version that still reads as idiomatic modern English (with an occasional Irish or American accent), Leopardi: Selected Poems should win for the Italian poet the wider appreciative audience he deserves. His themes are mutability, landscape, love; his attitude, one of unflinching realism in the face of unavoidable human loss. But the manners of the poems are a unique amalgam of philosophical toughness and the lyrically bittersweet. In a way more pure and distilled than most others in the Western tradition, these poems are truly what Matthew Arnold asked all poetry to be, a "criticism of life." The translator's aim is to convey something of the profundity and something of the sheer poetic achievement of Leopardi's inestimable Canti.

Book excerpt: LONGLISTED FOR THE CENTER FOR FICTION FIRST NOVEL PRIZE LONGLISTED FOR THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION “Bold, virtuosic, addictive, erotic – there is nothing like The Pisces. I have no idea how Broder does it, but I loved every dark and sublime page of it.” —Stephanie Danler, author of Sweetbitter Lucy has been writing her dissertation on Sappho for nine years when she and her boyfriend break up in a dramatic flameout. After she bottoms out in Phoenix, her sister in Los Angeles insists Lucy dog-sit for the summer. Annika's home is a gorgeous glass cube on Venice Beach, but Lucy can find little relief from her anxiety — not in the Greek chorus of women in her love addiction therapy group, not in her frequent Tinder excursions, not even in Dominic the foxhound's easy affection. Everything changes when Lucy becomes entranced by an eerily attractive swimmer while sitting alone on the beach rocks one night. But when Lucy learns the truth about his identity, their relationship, and Lucy’s understanding of what love should look like, take a very unexpected turn. A masterful blend of vivid realism and giddy fantasy, pairing hilarious frankness with pulse-racing eroticism, THE PISCES is a story about falling in obsessive love with a merman: a figure of Sirenic fantasy whose very existence pushes Lucy to question everything she thought she knew about love, lust, and meaning in the one life we have.

Book excerpt: The Expression Garden appears to be a new venture with a form quite new and alien in the realm of English Poetry. The poet sings poignantly and vehemently in his love poems imploring earnestly for the reunion of love, with a predominant note of subjectivity, no doubt. However, it is his other poems, the Nature Poems and other contemplative poems in which the poet has come out with a prophetic voice to the society at large, seeking to reaffirm the values for decency relationship, loyalty and modesty. It is this which renders gravity and sublimity to his work in spite of his simple and straight forward approach. M.A English, Universty of Peshawar Sirajul Haq.

Each poem is a search for meaning in an otherwise random sequence of events which lean always toward the relationships that lend significance to our lives, the connections between those we love and those we have lost, and the many possible futures each moment implies. From "The Heart's Sad Music," there is no escaping the realization that "We are surrounded by the ghosts of those we love."

Book Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person

Download or read book Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person written by The School of Life and published by School of Life Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays extended from The New York Times' most-read article of 2016. Anyone we might marry could, of course, be a little bit wrong for us. We don’t expect bliss every day. The fault isn’t entirely our own; it has to do with the devilish truth that anyone we’re liable to meet is going to be rather wrong, in some fascinating way or another, because this is simply what all humans happen to be – including, sadly, ourselves. This collection of essays proposes that we don’t need perfection to be happy. So long as we enter our relationships in the right spirit, we have every chance of coping well enough with, and even delighting in, the inevitable and distinctive wrongness that lies in ourselves and our beloveds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From times immemorial, poetry has been an outlet of emotions, impulses and ideas in innovative styles. As far as my association with poetry goes, I would say that writing poems suits me as I always intend to speak less and often in rhythms of my thoughts. The moment the rhythm breaks, the poem ends. As far as I can understand it, there’s no specific theory to my writing of poetry. The poems I wrote have a diverse range of subjects and are mostly written in different states of mind.

Book Revolution of Everyday Life

Download or read book Revolution of Everyday Life written by Raoul Vaneigem and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published just months before the May 1968 upheavals in France, Raoul Vaneigem’s The Revolution of Everyday Life offered a lyrical and aphoristic critique of the “society of the spectacle” from the point of view of individual experience. Whereas Debord’s masterful analysis of the new historical conditions that triggered the uprisings of the 1960s armed the revolutionaries of the time with theory, Vaneigem’s book described their feelings of desperation directly, and armed them with “formulations capable of firing point-blank on our enemies.” “I realise,” writes Vaneigem in his introduction, “that I have given subjective will an easy time in this book, but let no one reproach me for this without first considering the extent to which the objective conditions of the contemporary world advance the cause of subjectivity day after day.” Vaneigem names and defines the alienating features of everyday life in consumer society: survival rather than life, the call to sacrifice, the cultivation of false needs, the dictatorship of the commodity, subjection to social roles, and above all the replacement of God by the Economy. And in the second part of his book, “Reversal of Perspective,” he explores the countervailing impulses that, in true dialectical fashion, persist within the deepest alienation: creativity, spontaneity, poetry, and the path from isolation to communication and participation. For “To desire a different life is already that life in the making.” And “fulfillment is expressed in the singular but conjugated in the plural.” The present English translation was first published by Rebel Press of London in 1983. This new edition of The Revolution of Everyday Life has been reviewed and corrected by the translator and contains a new preface addressed to English-language readers by Raoul Vaneigem. The book is the first of several translations of works by Raoul Vaneigem that PM Press plans to publish in uniform volumes. Vaneigem’s classic work is to be followed by The Knight, the Lady, the Devil, and Death (2003) and The Inhumanity of Religion (2000).
