Book excerpt: The modern broiler chicken has developed into a remarkably efficient production animal, exhibiting greater average daily gain, shorter time to market, and heavier breast yield than ever before. However, as productivity has increased, there has been a corresponding increase in the development of muscle myopathies. These muscle myopathies have a detrimental effect on product quality and economic value within the industry. However, the impact of muscle myopathies on broiler welfare has yet to be quantified, although it has been acknowledged as a potential welfare issue. To address this concern, a set of experiments was conducted to investigate the impact of one prevalent muscle myopathy in modern broilers, Woody Breast Disease, on the behavior of broilers. The first experiment conducted a validation of two alternative behavior observation methods for broiler chickens: scan sampling and automated tracking software. The results were utilized to identify optimal data collection methods for the second experiment, which looked at changes in activity in broilers experiencing Woody Breast Disease. In the first experiment, manual continuous behavior observation was performed on video data of ten individually housed broiler cockerels for eight consecutive hours. This continuous data was converted to 1-second intervals using SAS, and additional data sets were extrapolated in SAS for 0.5, 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, and 30 min scan sampling intervals. Each scan sampling interval was compared to the continuous observation data and evaluated for accuracy. Active, eating, drinking, and maintenance behaviors were validated for 0.5-minute intervals. Active, inactive, eating, and maintenance behaviors were validated for 1-minute intervals, and inactive behavior was validated for 5-minute intervals. In the second part of the experiment, the same video data utilized for continuous manual observation was observed using EthoVision XT automated tracking software. The total duration of activity and inactivity observed in EthoVision was compared to the total duration of activity and inactivity with continuous manual observation, and EthoVision was validated for observing inactive behavior in individually housed broiler chickens. The second experiment observed the behavior of twenty-seven restrict fed Ross 708 broilers chickens with differing presence and severity of Woody Breast Disease. Video data was collected on broilers for a four-hour time period (5:30 am - 9:30 am) from days 21-55, and EthoVision was utilized to observe active behavior, which was defined as measurable displacement of the center point of the bird. At processing on day 55, broilers were assigned a Woody Breast severity score of 0, 1, or 2. Activity was not different between birds with differing Woody Breast severity scores. The results of this experiment suggest further investigation into behavior variation in birds with Woody Breast Disease should be conducted, as deviations in behavior patterns or demonstration of pain-specific behaviors may not have been captured in this study.
