Book Birddogs and Tough Old Broads

Download or read book Birddogs and Tough Old Broads written by Pete Smith and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birddogs and Tough Old Broads: Women Journalists of Mississippi and a Century of State Politics, 1880s-1980s documents the professional experiences and observations of more than a dozen journalists, all women, all covering Mississippi state politics over the course of a century—from the 1880s, right after the end of Reconstruction (when newspapers were the primary source of information) to the 1980s, a time period marked by steady declines in both news revenue and circulation, and the emergence of corporate journalism, led by media conglomerates like Gannett. Pete Smith argues that the experiences of the women journalists reflect broader social, political, legal, and cultural struggles and changes in both the South and the nation during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The evolution of the modern-day political journalist, particularly for southern women who aspired to such a position, can be seen in their struggles and accomplishments.

Book Steel City Readers

Download or read book Steel City Readers written by Mary Grover and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. Steel City Readers* makes available, and interprets in detail, a large body of new evidence about past cultures and communities of reading. Its distinctive method is to listen to readers' own voices, rather than theorising about them as an undifferentiated group. Its cogent and engaging structure traces reading journeys from childhood into education and adulthood, and attends to settings from home to school to library. It has a distinctive focus on reading for pleasure and its framework of argument situates that type of reading in relation to dimensions of gender and class. It is grounded in place, and particularly in the context of a specific industrial city: Sheffield. The men and women featured in the book, coming to adulthood in the 1930s and 1940s, rarely regarded reading as a means of self-improvement. It was more usually a compulsive and intensely pleasurable private activity.

Book Shellac and Swing

Download or read book Shellac and Swing written by Bruce Lindsay and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Shellac and Swing!' tells the story of the gramophone's 'golden age,' from 1900-1955, when it helped to shape Britain's culture from the arts to warfare. The story focuses on the gramophone, the invention of Emile Berliner in the 1880s, but begins with a brief outline of the first attempts to record the human voice and of Edison's invention of the cylinder and the phonograph. It uses primary evidence, images and interviews with DJs, fans, musicians and historians to explore this fascinating and often eccentric tale. Each chapter ends with 'On the Record,' a discussion of a record that relates to the chapter's themes. Although the gramophone and its fragile shellac discs were vital to Britain's music scene-opera and music hall, the Jazz Age, the crooners, early rock'n'roll-its impact was far more extensive. Its place in British history encompasses advertising and design, fraud and piracy, phallic symbols, talking books, the threat from radio and TV, the contrasting worlds of the Salvation Army and adult 'party' discs, the creation of a parliamentary insult, new political strategies and the seditious activity of the Mau Mau. From the establishment of the Gramophone Company in London in the late 1890s to the end of shellac record production in the 1950s, the British public bought the machines and the discs in their millions and the record labels made stars of performers like Caruso, Harry Lauder, Al Bowlly and Dame Nellie Melba. 'Shellac and Swing!' explores the ways in which the gramophone helped these singers to achieve stardom but it also explores in detail and for the first time many other stories of not-so-famous performers, of the gramophone in political electioneering and of forgotten technology: the first pirate radio broadcasters, the soldiers who took their 'Trench Decca' portables to the Western Front, the invention of the Flame-O-Phone, the People's Budget recordings and the pioneering label owner and producer of 'blue' discs. The gramophone's heyday ended with the rise of rock 'n 'roll, teenagers, the 45 rpm single, the LP and the record player, but it survives today as part of a vibrant contemporary music, fashion and lifestyle scene.

The author has captured the joy and consternation in the human experience, recording an astonishing study of detail, and an uncommon observation of wonder and vulnerability. When asked to give an account of the origins of Dreamland, Mr. Thiel states, I am not sure if I am ready to uncover every influence with an intrusive eye. Fascination with the complexity of life had led me to write a story about the struggle for freedom, and how the rise of unchecked power can rattle the core of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is time travel possible?...There are scientists who believe that it will be in a few years. But who knows for sure what nature can do, or forces higher than we? I sure don’t,...and neither did Cory and Jessica Vance,...until it happened! One minute, they were asleep in their own bed, in 2007, and the next morning, they woke up in someone else’s house, in the year 1876! Sound bizarre?...To say the least! Why did it happen to them,...and for what reason? That was only two of a few dozen questions they pondered on for the next sixteen days,...and became an adventure they would never forget! They were doing things only imagined before. They were suffering fear of the unknown, fear of losing their humanity or, who they were,...all without knowing why it had happened? There were dozens of theories, maybes and what ifs, but the bottom line was that they were thought to be someone they were not and because of that, were forced to carry out an event that had already happened once,...but now, it would happen again, with them as the new cast in an ongoing serial. They were about to face dying at the hands of a ruthless killer if the madman’s plot succeeded,...and it would succeed unless Cory was able to change the outcome of what had already happened! But if he did, they also knew that it could change the future and that, blended with the dreaded fear of dying was what worried them the most. The thought of leaving their family, and they not knowing what had happened to them was devastating. But they had no choice, they had been sent to the past, obviously to right a wrong that happened there. But why,...to fix a wrong that happened in 2007?...One that was about to happen,...what? They may never know! This is a time odyssey, a glimpse of what could be possible,...and no one knows for certain that it is not,...and who knows, science may discover the secret, but if it does, it’ll be because a greater force allowed it, a force that already has the formula.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By Nobel Prize Winner Peter Handke Short Letter, Long Farewell is one the most inventive and exhilarating of the great Peter Handke’s novels. Full of seedy noir atmospherics and boasting an air of generalized delirium, the book starts by introducing us to a nameless young German who has just arrived in America, where he hopes to get over the collapse of his marriage. No sooner has he arrived, however, than he discovers that his ex-wife is pursuing him. He flees, she follows, and soon the couple is running circles around each other across the length of America—from Philadelphia to St. Louis to the Arizona desert, and from Portland, Oregon, to L.A. Is it love or vengeance that they want from each other? Everything’s spectacularly unclear in a book that is travelogue, suspense story, domestic comedy, and Western showdown, with a totally unexpected Hollywood twist at the end. Above all, Short Letter, Long Farewell is a love letter to America, its landscapes and popular culture, the invitation and the threat of its newness and wildness and emptiness, with the promise of a new life—or the corpse of an old one—lying just around the corner.
