Book Public Service Broadcasting in Transition

Download or read book Public Service Broadcasting in Transition written by Monroe Edwin Price and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few will deny that public service broadcasting?broadcasting that is controlled neither by the state nor by private media corporations?is an essential ingredient in modern democracy. But, as a number of initiatives in transition economies have shown, the inception and development of a strong public broadcasting system is a Herculean task that is easily sidetracked by politics or ideology, or stalled by lack of funding. Especially when state budgets are stretched, the expense is hard to justify. This collection of documents, comments, and cases brings all the major issues in public service broadcasting policy into focus and sets the problems to be addressed in sharp relief. It draws on white papers from NGOs and broadcasters, legislation from a wide range of countries (and a model law), accounts of public broadcasting efforts in transition states, analyses of evolving policy in established systems, government regulatory guidelines, and a great deal more. Among the matters touched upon are the following: the principles of public service broadcasting and their cultural and economic justification; limiting state interference; the place of public broadcasting in a multi-channel, ?market-driven? world; the appropriate mix of public and private revenues; objectivity and impartiality in broadcasting; how institutional structures can shape programming strategies; the use of competition law to adjust relations between public and private broadcasting; EU accession standards for public service broadcasting; and the impact of digital broadcasting. Broadcast professionals, students and teachers in communications and related fields, government officials interested in strengthening public service broadcasting and keeping pace with rapid developments?all will benefit enormously from this thoughtful and informative book. It will allow them to think well beyond the standard formulae about the function of public service broadcasting and its role in society.

Now in its second edition, Media Law in Ireland provides a comprehensive overview of one of the most dynamic and rapidly changing areas of the law. The way in which people consume media has changed and developed immensely in recent years. New platforms, and new ways of creating and consuming content are revolutionising the way information is spread around the world. With each new platform comes a new set of challenges and complexities, as they break away from the traditional media model. Many of the cases developing in these areas have been high-profile, divisive, and controversial, from issues surrounding freedom of expression to the challenges of privacy in a digital age. This book will throw light on the formidable legal complexities involved in the new media in a clear and accessible manner. This new edition covers many of the developments in the area in the eight years since it was originally published. Among the developments covered are: the Digital Switchover, the adoption of the EU electronic communications reform package, and the Consumer and Competition Protection Act 2014. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this analysis of media law in Ireland surveys the massively altered and enlarged legal landscape traditionally encompassed in laws pertaining to freedom of expression and regulation of communications. Everywhere, a shift from mass media to mass self-communication has put enormous pressure on traditional law models. An introduction describing the main actors and salient aspects of media markets is followed by in-depth analyses of print media, radio and television broadcasting, the Internet, commercial communications, political advertising, concentration in media markets, and media regulation. Among the topics that arise for discussion are privacy, cultural policy, protection of minors, competition policy, access to digital gateways, protection of journalists’ sources, standardization and interoperability, and liability of intermediaries. Relevant case law is considered throughout, as are various ethical codes. A clear, comprehensive overview of media legislation, case law, and doctrine, presented from the practitioner’s point of view, this book is a valuable time-saving resource for all concerned with media and communication freedom. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Ireland will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative media law.

Book Conor Volume I

Download or read book Conor Volume I written by Donald Harman Akenson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994-09-07 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of Conor Cruise O'Brien reads like the work of several people, not just one. Having served as a diplomat under Sean MacBride, he came to world prominence as special representative to Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary General of the United Nations, in the then-Congo. Squeezed ruthlessly by big-power politics, he resigned and wrote To Katanga and Back (1962), a classic in modern African history and still the only book to get behind the polished marble façade to reveal how the United Nations works. O'Brien then became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, and battled for academic freedom against one of the most amiable of tyrants, Kwame Nkrumah. He moved on to become the first incumbent of the Schweitzer Chair at New York University. His relations with the "New York intellectuals" of the time were productive, acrimonious, sometimes comic - and part of a central chapter in the intellectual history of America in the 1960s. From 1969 to 1977 O'Brien was probably the most hated person in Ireland, as well as one of the most heroic. One of the first to see the fascistic nature of the Provisional IRA, he began an unrelenting campaign against its terrorism. In that campaign he called into question the basic myths upon which the Irish republic was constructed. His States of Ireland (1972) is the most publicly influential piece of Irish historical writing since John Mitchel's The Last Conquest of Ireland (1860), and many students of Irish history believe that O'Brien's work in the 1970s was crucial to averting civil war in Ireland. Whatever one thinks about this extraordinary man, one cannot ignore him. He may well be the most important Irish nonfiction writer of the twentieth century, with writings as widely scattered as they have been influential. Volume I, Narrative is the biography of one of the most controversial, engaging, and courageous individuals of this century. Volume II, Anthology brings together his best short pieces, many of which originally appeared in such periodicals as the Spectator, the New Republic, Harper's, the Atlantic, the New Statesman, the Observer, and the New York Review of Books and have never been reprinted. A complete bibliography of O'Brien's work is also provided.

Book Broadcasting in Ireland

Download or read book Broadcasting in Ireland written by Desmond Fisher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broadcasting in Ireland (1978) outlines the historical and sociological background of Ireland to place the progress of its broadcasting service in the context of its post-independence development. It analyses the difficulties of running public service broadcasting financed by both licence fee and advertising, and competing in half its television reception area with two of the premier broadcasting systems in the world. With regular broadcasting beginning with Independence, its development was inevitably bound up with the process of building the political, economic and social framework of the new State, and this book closely examines how the Irish broadcasting system coped with the attending economic, cultural and political difficulties.
