Download or read book International Handbook of Earthquake Engineering Seismology Part B written by William H.K. Lee and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-23 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volume International Handbook of Earthquake and Engineering Seismology represents the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior's (IASPEI) ambition to provide a comprehensive overview of our present knowledge of earthquakes and seismology. This state-of-the-art work is the only reference to cover all aspects of seismology--a "resource library" for civil and structural engineers, geologists, geophysicists, and seismologists in academia and industry around the globe.Part B, by more than 100 leading researchers from major institutions of science around the globe, features 34 chapters detailing strong-motion seismology, earthquake engineering, quake prediction and hazards mitigation, as well as detailed reports from more than 40 nations. Also available is The International Handbook of Earthquake and Engineering Seismology, Part A. - Authoritative articles by more than 100 leading scientists - Extensive glossary of terminology plus 2000+ biographical sketches of notable seismologists

Download or read book Seismic Earth written by Alan Levander and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 2005-01-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of theGeophysical Monograph Series, Volume 157. Seismology is one of the few means available to Earth scientistsfor probing the mechanical structure of the Earth's interior. Theadvent of modern seismic instrumentation at the end of the 19thcentury and its installation across the globe was shortly followedby mankind's first general understanding of the Earth's interior:The Croatian seismologist Andrija Mohorovièiæ discoveredthe crust-mantle boundary in central Europe in 1909, the GermanBeno Gutenberg determined the radius of the Earth's core in 1913,Great Britian's Sir Harold Jeffreys established its fluid characterby 1926, and the Dane Inge Lehman discovered the solid inner corein 1936. It is notable that seismology, even in its earliest days, was an international science. Unlike much of the Earth sciences, seismology has its roots in physics, notably optics (manyuniversity seismology programs are, or initially were, attached tometeorology, astronomy, or physics departments), and draws from theliteratures of imaging systems and statistical communicationstheory developed by, or employed in, astronomy, electricalengineering, medicine, ocean acoustics, and nondestructivematerials testing. Seismology has close ties to petro-physics andmineral physics, the measurements of the disciplines being comparedto infer the chemical and physical structure of the Earth'sinterior.

Download or read book Earthquake Source Asymmetry Structural Media and Rotation Effects written by Roman Teisseyre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This breakthrough book is the first to examine the rotational effects in earthquakes, a revolutionary concept in seismology. Existing models do no yet explain the significant rotational and twisting motions that occur during an earthquake and cause the failure of structures. The rotation and twist effects are investigated and described, and their consequences for designing tall buildings and other important structures are presented. This book will change the way the world views earthquakes.

Download or read book Infrasound Monitoring for Atmospheric Studies written by Alexis Le Pichon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-19 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of infrasound to monitor the atmosphere has, like infrasound itself, gone largely unheard of through the years. But it has many applications, and it is about time that a book is being devoted to this fascinating subject. Our own involvement with infrasound occurred as graduate students of Prof. William Donn, who had established an infrasound array at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) of Columbia University. It was a natural outgrowth of another major activity at Lamont, using seismic waves to explore the Earth’s interior. Both the atmosphere and the solid Earth feature velocity (seismic or acoustic) gradients in the vertical which act to refract the respective waves. The refraction in turn allows one to calculate the respective background structure in these mediums, indirectly exploring locations that are hard to observe otherwise. Monitoring these signals also allows one to discover various phenomena, both natural and man-made (some of which have military applications).
