Book British Industries Under Free Trade

Download or read book British Industries Under Free Trade written by Harold Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Industries Under Free Trade: Essays by Experts The object of the present volume is to supply a detailed answer to the question whether British industries have or have not flourished under Free Trade. The volume is necessarily limited in size, and the time allowed for its preparation was not long. It has therefore been impossible to deal with all the industries that might well have been here represented. But the ground covered is sufficiently wide to give an indication of our national industry as a whole, and special care has been taken to include those industries which are often pointed to by Protectionists as awful examples of the policy of free imports. The writers of the following essays are not pedants who are content to mutter exploded shibboleths. They are practical business men, writing of things that they know of their personal knowledge. Book Kicking Away the Ladder

Download or read book Kicking Away the Ladder written by Ha-Joon Chang and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the rich countries really become rich? In this provocative study, Ha-Joon Chang examines the great pressure on developing countries from the developed world to adopt certain 'good policies' and 'good institutions', seen today as necessary for economic development. His conclusions are compelling and disturbing: that developed countries are attempting to 'kick away the ladder' with which they have climbed to the top, thereby preventing developing countries from adopting policies and institutions that they themselves have used.

Book The Rise of Free Trade

Download or read book The Rise of Free Trade written by Cheryl Schonhardt-Bailey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1997 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was Britain the first country to opt for unilateral free trade 150 years ago? On 16 May 1846, the House of Commons voted to abolish tariff protection for agriculture - the famous 'repeal of the Corn Laws'. Britain then adhered to her free trade policy despite both her relative economic decline and the protectionist policies of her leading trade rivals, the USA and Germany. This four volume set examines and explains the contentious issues surrounding the policy shift to free trade and the subsequent persistence of that policy. This set provides a comprehensive collection of articles including previously unpublished material on nineteenth century British trade policy and a new and comprehensive introduction by the editor putting the material into context.

Book The Conspiracy of Free Trade

Download or read book The Conspiracy of Free Trade written by Marc-William Palen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Second World War, the United States would become the leading 'neoliberal' proponent of international trade liberalization. Yet for nearly a century before, American foreign trade policy was dominated by extreme economic nationalism. What brought about this pronounced ideological, political, and economic about-face? How did it affect Anglo-American imperialism? What were the repercussions for the global capitalist order? In answering these questions, The 'Conspiracy' of Free Trade offers the first detailed account of the controversial Anglo-American struggle over empire and economic globalization in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. The book reinterprets Anglo-American imperialism through the global interplay between Victorian free-trade cosmopolitanism and economic nationalism, uncovering how imperial expansion and economic integration were mired in political and ideological conflict. Beginning in the 1840s, this conspiratorial struggle over political economy would rip apart the Republican Party, reshape the Democratic Party, and redirect Anglo-American imperial expansion for decades to come.

Book Free Trade and Liberal England 1846 1946

Download or read book Free Trade and Liberal England 1846 1946 written by Anthony Howe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The argument about the limits of Free Trade or Protectionism rages throughout the world to this day. Following the Repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846, free trade became one of the most distinctive defining features of the British state, and of British economic, social, and political life. Whilethe United States, much of the British Empire, and the leading European Powers turned towards protectionism before 1914, Britain alone held to a policy which had seemingly guaranteed power and prosperity. This book seeks to explain the political history of this tenacious loyalty. While the TariffReform opponents of free trade have been much studied, this is the first substantial account, based on a wide range of printed and archival sources, which explains the primacy of free trade in nineteenth- and early-twentieth century Britain. It also shows that by the centenary of the Repeal of theCorn Laws in 1946, although British free traders lamented the death of Liberal England, they heralded, under American leadership, the rebirth of the liberal international order.

In this book, the author seeks to bring out the causes which led to the coming of machinery and which made Great Britain the workshop of the world for a large part of the nineteenth century. Knowles especially stresses the world position of the United Kingdom during the past century owing to the developments of mechanical transport which were the inevitable outcome of the mass production by machines. This title also aims to account for the great change in public opinion after 1870, which led to the growth of State control, not merely in industry, but in commerce, agriculture, transport and imperial relations.
