Book Resource Communities in a Globalizing Region

Download or read book Resource Communities in a Globalizing Region written by Paul Bowles and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern British Columbia has always played an important role in Canada’s economy, but for many Canadians it also existed as an almost forgotten place: a vast territory where only a few roads, some railroad tracks, and a ferry system connected small cities, towns, and villages to the outside world. Now, as the global appetite for oil, gas, hydroelectricity, wood, and minerals intensifies, this resource-rich and geographically important region is being pulled onto the national and international economic stages. As debates around pipelines, mines, and hydroelectric projects intensify in local coffee shops, distant boardrooms, and the halls of Parliament, this timely volume examines the connections and tensions between resource communities and global market forces, illuminating how governments, Aboriginal peoples, organized labour, NGOs, and the private sector are adapting to, resisting, and embracing change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projecting modest future growth for both prices and harvest levels, this study, first published in 1990, provides theoretical and empirical justification for challenging the conventional wisdom that real timber prices will rise for the indefinite future. Book The Tropical Timber Trade Regime

Download or read book The Tropical Timber Trade Regime written by F. Gale and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-09-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gale explains why international negotiations have not produced a sustainable solution to tropical rainforest degradation. Using an innovative, critical approach to international regimes, the author analyzes the structure and operation of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). He shows how the timber industry and producing- and consuming-country governments created a blocking alliance that favoured developmentalist interests and ideas. The ITTO bolstered this alliance by permitting environmentalists merely to voice, but not to negotiate, their concerns.

Book The Soviet Wood Processing Industry

Download or read book The Soviet Wood Processing Industry written by Brenton M. Barr and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1970-12-15 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systematic study of the geography distribution of the wood-processing industry has received recent Soviet attention, yet the results have been disappointing. Soviet work has been descriptive and lacking in critical analysis of the location problem. In particular, there has been little, if any, attempt to assess the geographic distribution of the industry within the general context of location theory and to evaluate the role played by individual location factors. This monograph is a case study in the application of linear programming techniques to the analysis of transportation patterns within the wood-processing industry. It will add to North American studies not only a knowledge of the location of wood-processing industries but also a better understanding of the factors which have influenced the location of wood-processing in the Soviet Union.
