Chipper he was the sunday school supperintendent and was beeting time for the scholers to sing and Chipper he tirned round quick and see Beany, and Chipper he jest hipered into the organ log and grabed Beany by the coler and yanked him out of the lof and wauked him out of the chirch. then he got Micky Goold to blow the organ and Beany he lost his gob for 2 sundays, but Micky went to sleep 2 or 3 times and snoared feerful and they had to waik him up and once he hollered rite out loud, so Mickey he lost his gob and they got Beany back. Let us paraphrase the notion. On a single and solitary height rising out of a broad and melancholy waste through which flows a river, often rain-swollen and almost always misty, stands the min of what was once a castle, but which now is given over wholly to the keeping of the bats and owls. On a serene, bright, lonely common stands a sub urban cottage, luxuriously fitted up, only a little too large to be a veritable cottage ornée. A sea divides these two dissimilar structures; and they might be described as far more rigorously divided by a very ocean of traditional, national, and social difl'erences. Yet, if one might ideal ize brick and stone as Heine has idealized living timber, he could imagine the ruin on the hill yearning by anticipa tion towards the cottage on the bright common, or this latter haunted in dreams by the sombre form of the com panion it has never seen. Perhaps the whole mystery and meaning of this story may be prematurely revealed and ex hansted for the reader by this little opening allegory. But there is hardly enough of mystery in the story anyhow to make the reader complain of losing it by premature revela tion. There are several reasons for this, but most of the erroneous ideas may be traced back to the days when professional pugilists and runners were the only men who ever entered on any athletic exercise with any sort of organised preparation. For them a severe course of training was possibly a necessity. They were for the most part men well advanced in years and naturally fleshy; and to achieve the feats which they accomplished they no doubt found it necessary to reduce their Weight, and for this purpose to take a great deal of exercise and to avoid all food tending to the formation of flesh but for the average school boy who plays football or lives, or goes paper-chasing, or, in fact, takes the ordinary amount of boy's exercise, training, as it is generally misunderstood, is quite unnecessary, even if not harmful. He has no superfluous fat of which to rid himself. So any sweating which he may do only weakens him and renders him liable to cold. His lungs are in wow order and there fore his wind is good, and so there is no need for him to deprive himself of vegetables or his favourite pies or puddings. All'he wants is to lead a healthy active life, and to do a fair amount of practice in the particular branch of athletics in which he hopes to excel.
