This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Britain in the Middle Ages a History for Beginners Since, in the early stages of school work, it is more important to present, as vividly as possible, some of the fundamental historic ideas than to give any outline of events, it is hoped that this collection of stories, told from the chronicles, may provoke readers to discussion and further inquiry. Questions have been included in the appendix, some suggesting handwork, both as a means of presentation in lessons and for illustrative purposes. Considerable use has been made of literature as historic evidence. Stories like those of the Knights of the Round Table often leave us with a clearer impression of the spirit of the times than any historic record. Many books of the kind are now easily accessible and could be read side by side with the text. Collections of pictures, such as the Bayeux Tapestry, published by the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Foucquet's Chroniques de France, offer valuable opportunities for some research on the child's part. Download or read book The Early and Middle Ages of England Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Pearson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early and Middle Ages of England In the present volume I have tried to give the last results of enquiry into the early history of England. Perhaps no period has been more profoundly studied, or less generally understood. The true explanation of this apparent anomaly is, I believe, that the great works of Sir F. Palgrave, Mr. Kemble, and their followers, have suffered in popular estimation from the elaborate treatment and profuse illustration which make their writings invaluable to scholars. I have condensed the history of twelve hundred years into a single volume, with a view to the large class who want time or inclination to pursue English history as an exclusive study. I think, too, that the labours of antiquarians, essayists, and philologists require from time to time to be reduced to order, for the mere purpose of comparison. An imperfect, even a false, theory of the connection and interdependence of events, is better than none at all. Without regard to the powers of arrangement, and vivid narrative style that make M. Thierry's "Conquest of England" a work of genius, I am sure the theory of races which it developes, however unsound it may be in its principles and application, has had results of the last importance in stimulating enquiry. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England During the Early and Middle Ages, Vol. 2 The student will perceive at a glance, that I have confined myself exclusively to the political side of history. In the chapter on the English Church, for in stance, I have not attempted to sketch the variations of religious thought, or even to appropriate the labours, by which I have tried to profit, of Professor Brewer and Professor Stubbs, on the inner life of the great religious orders. It is necessary to my plan that I should treat such matters only in their results on secular society and those who have leisure and inclination for fuller re searches can easily refer to the sources I have indicated. It is difficult to be quite consistent in these matters, but, at the hazard of occasional meagreness, I have thought it better to confine myself to a single subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginning of the Middle Ages The present volume must be considered as an introduction or preface to the series of "Epochs of Modern History," rather than as an integral member of the series. The other volumes are narratives, and enter into detail. This one is a mere general sketch, necessarily one of the barest outline, faint and vague where they are full. My aim has been little more than to disengage the leading lines in the history of five most important and most confused centuries, and to mark the influences which most asserted themselves, and which seem to have most governed the results as we see them in subsequent history. In this summary view I have confined my attention mainly to the West, saying little of the great nations of later times in the North and East - Scandinavia, Poland, Hungary, Russia. Book The History of the Middle Ages Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Middle Ages Classic Reprint written by Victor Duruy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Middle Ages This translation is published in the confident belief that it will prove as valuable a book for school use and general reading among us as it has proved itself in France. Care has been taken to distinguish the editor's work from the author's, in both text and notes. Some few omissions have been made from the author's text without notice, chiefly for the purpose of simplifying the narrative, and corrections of dates and of manifest typographical errors have not been marked, but in every case where the author's meaning has been changed the fact is indicated by the use of brackets, and the editor's notes are signed, while theauthor's are left unsigned. In general, the intention has been to confine changes and notes to points of sufficient importance to justify notice, but in a book of this kind it is hardly possible that every statement in need of revision has been detected, and I am conscious to myself of unequal knowledge of the different subjects dealt with. Book The History of Medieval Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Medieval Europe Classic Reprint written by Lynn Thorndike and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medieval Europe This book aims to trace the development of Europe and its civilization, from the decline of the Roman Empire to the opening of the sixteenth century, for the benefit of the college student and the general reader. It is almost needless to say that such a work makes little claim to originality in method and still less in subject-matter, which it has shame lessly borrowed from numerous sources. Indeed, in a book of this sort it is more fitting to apologize for anything new that one says than for following in old and beaten tracks. The author, of course, hopes that without making too radical departures he has introduced some improvement in selection and presentation of material, and that he has made few mistakes of fact and interpretation. The Table of Contents indicates the general plan of the volume, which is to treat medieval Europe as a whole and to hang the story upon a single thread, rather than to recount as distinct narratives the respective histories of France, England, Germany, Italy, and other countries of modem Europe. French or English history may be studied as such in courses and books so labeled. Moreover, the modern interest in the national state has usually been car ried too far in the study of the Middle Ages. Local division, not national unity and central government, is surely the striking feature through most of the medieval centuries. Scholars have found out many things because they are able now to read the signs on the rocks and under the soil. From the tools left behind, from the remains of dwellings and from treasures found in graves, we have learned about the ways of men in times before history was written down.

Book English Industries of the Middle Ages

Download or read book English Industries of the Middle Ages written by Louis Francis Salzman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Industries of the Middle Ages: Being an Introduction to the Industrial History of Medieval England The title of this book indicates at once its aim and its limitations. It makes no pretence to be a complete history of the early industrial life of England, but at the same time it does claim to be an introduction to the study of that subject. It is my hope, and indeed my belief, that from it the general reader, equipped with interest in the history of his country rather than with technical knowledge, will obtain something more than a bare outline of industrial conditions in pre-Elizabethan days. The student who is anxious to go more deeply into the subjects here treated may use this book as a road map and the footnotes as finger-posts to guide him to the heights of completer knowledge. From the nature of my subject it was inevitable that the book should be full of technicalities, figures, and statistics, but it has been my endeavour to render the technicalities intelligible, and to prevent the significance of the statistics being obscured by an excess of detail.
