Book Brit Girls of the Sixties Volume One Dusty Springfield Helen Shapiro

Download or read book Brit Girls of the Sixties Volume One Dusty Springfield Helen Shapiro written by David Bret and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creator of the unique style known as 'blue-eyed soul', Dusty Springfield was instrumental in introducing Motown to Britain, and for several years reigned supreme on both sides of the Atlantic. Her voice flute-like, smoky and sensual, frequently in the space of the same song was similarly unique. Over a decade after her death, she remains a show business legend yet she also remains an enigma, a completely self-fabricated, difficult yet strangely vulnerable woman who allowed few access to her complex, in turns exhuberant and neurotic world where at times there was little difference between reality and make-believe. HELEN SHAPIRO: The teenage sensation whose commercial career ended as the other Brit Girls were coming into their own, though she went on to be a fine, successful jazz-singer. Contains full 1960s UK and European vinyl discographies. Also in this series: Volume Two: Marianne Faithfull & Kathy Kirby Volume Three: Cilla Black, Sandie Shaw & Lulu

Book Sixties British Pop Outside in

Download or read book Sixties British Pop Outside in written by Gordon Ross Thompson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Itchycoo Park, 1964-1970-the second volume of Sixties British Pop, Outside In- explores how London songwriters, musicians, and production crews navigated the era's cultural upheavals by reimagining the pop-music envelope. British songwriters, musicians, and production crews explored form, sound, and subject matter as western society grappled with racism, sexism, war, revolution, and migration in a postcolonial world. As these creators and curators of popular culture combined interests in jazz, folk, blues, Indian ragas, and western classical music, they created sophisticated hybrid forms that redefined pop music. Based on extensive research and drawing on vintage and original interviews, Sixties British Pop, Outside In contextualizes the world of the Beatles through King Crimson in the frameworks of the postwar surge in births that created the Bulge Generation in the UK (and Baby Boomers in America), emergent technologies, English behavior, and the places and spaces in which people created and consumed pop music"--

Book Dusty Springfield

Download or read book Dusty Springfield written by Laurence Cole and published by Libri Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2008 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dusty Springfield - in the middle of nowhere deals with the idea of Dusty Springfield as cultural icon - partly promoted by the woman who went by that name, partly interpreted down the years by newspapers, magazines, television, books, websites and, of course, by the author." "The book describes the cultural reception of Dusty Springfield when she was alive and since her death. What has been said and written about her music, appearance and celebrity is reviewed with the intention of building a picture of her place in Anglo-American culture. Although neither history nor biography in any conventional sense, the book may be viewed as containing historical and biographical features, as it narrates a life-in-text across nearly half a century. The writing also sets Dusty against the musical and social background of her times, and provides theoretical perspectives against which to discuss her artistry." "This is the first book-length study of Dusty Springfield's contribution to popular culture in terms of race, gender or sexuality, and will appeal not only to Dusty fans but also to readers with a general interest in popular music or cultural studies."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Smiths FAQ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (FAQ). Revered and massively influential, the Smiths have been called the most important band of the fertile U.K. 1980s music scene. While the group was only active for five years (1982 to 1987), the cult of the Manchester-reared foursome has ballooned in the three decades since its dissolution. Despite a $75 million offer to reunite for a two month tour in 2007, Morrissey and Johnny Marr, the group's principals, refused, opting to leave their legend untainted. The Smiths have since influenced a who's who of alternative music, including Death Cab for Cutie, Radiohead, the Killers, Jeff Buckley, Pete Yorn, the Decemberists, and Oasis. Featuring a foreword by guitarist and "Fifth Smith" who played with the band in 1986, The Smiths FAQ traces the band's history with clarity and detail, illuminating such questions as Who were the Nosebleeds? Why did Morrissey shun the Ramones? Who were the Paris Valentinos? What was Cult guitarist Billy Duffy's connection to the band? How was Morrissey injured during the group's U.S. debut performance? What Smiths single paid homage to T. Rex?. John D. Luerssen (author of FAQ series titles about U2, Bruce Springsteen, and Nirvana) gathers the indispensable early facts, the legendary stories, and inimitable anecdotes that make this a must-own tome for all fans.

Book Let s spend the night together

  • Author : Subcultures Network
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2023-11-07
  • ISBN : 152615997X

Download or read book Let s spend the night together written by Subcultures Network and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let’s spend the night together explores how sex and sexuality provided essential elements of British youth culture in the 1950s through to the 1980s. It shows how the underlying sexual charge of rock ‘n’roll – and pop music more generally – was integral to the broader challenge embodied in the youth cultures that developed after World War Two. As teenage hormones rushed to move to the music and take advantage of the spaces opening up through consumption, education and employment, so the boundaries of British morality and cultural propriety were tested and often transgressed. Be it the assertive masculinity of the teds or the lustful longings of the teeny-bopper, the gender-bending of glam or the subterranean allure of an underground club/disco, the free love of the 1960s or the punk provocations in the 1970s, sex was forever to the fore and, more often than not, underpinned the moral panics that fitfully followed any cultural shift in youthful style and behaviour. Drawing from scholarship across a range of disciplines, the Subcultures Network explore how sex and sexuality were experienced, presented, conferred, responded to and understood within the context of youth culture, popular music and social change in the period between World War Two and the advent of AIDS. The essays locate sex, music and youth culture in the context of post-war Britain: with a widening and ever-more prevalent media; amidst the loosening bonds of censorship; in a society shaped by changing patterns of consumption and the emergence of the ‘teenager’; existing, as Jeff Nuttall famously argued, under the shadow of the (nuclear) bomb.

Download or read book Gathered From Coincidence written by Tony Dunsbee and published by M-Y Books Limited. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining the personal memories and critical analysis of a self-confessed pop addict with a wealth of contemporary documentary evidence, Gathered From Coincidence reconstructs a truly momentous era to tell the story of the music of the Sixties year by year. By tracing in parallel the origins and development of the recording careers of major talents on both sides of the Atlantic - the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Dusty Springfield and many more besides - this account shows how they traded creativity with one another. All the great Sixties' hits - as well as a host of less well-known gems - are described in the context of the charts of the day, tracking the ups and downs of different trends as they came and went, such as: rock'n'roll, rhythm & blues, psychedelia, modern folk, the concept album or supergroups. But beyond this, each chapter also places the music in a broader historical and cultural setting of landmark events at home and abroad - the space race, the Profumo affair, the Cold War, Vietnam, the growth of satire - to show how, as the decade unfolded, the paths of pop and current affairs drew ever closer together. If you thought the Sixties were just about the fleeting dreams of hippies in the Summer of Love, then think again! This book will open your eyes to a far-reaching imaginative legacy and how it came to shape pop music as a dazzling art form in its own right.

Book Jews Race and Popular Music

Download or read book Jews Race and Popular Music written by Jon Stratton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jon Stratton provides a pioneering work on Jews as a racialized group in the popular music of America, Britain and Australia during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Rather than taking a narrative, historical approach the book consists of a number of case studies, looking at the American, British and Australian music industries. Stratton's primary motivation is to uncover how the racialized positioning of Jews, which was sometimes similar but often different in each of the societies under consideration, affected the kinds of music with which Jews have become involved. Stratton explores race as a cultural construction and continues discussions undertaken in Jewish Studies concerning the racialization of the Jews and the stereotyping of Jews in order to present an in-depth and critical understanding of Jews, race and popular music.
