Book An Economic History of England the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book An Economic History of England the Eighteenth Century written by T.S. Ashton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T.S. Ashton has sought less to cover the field of economic history in detail than to offer a commentary, with a stress on trends of development rather than on forms of organization or economic legislation. This book seeks to interpret the growth of population, agriculture, maufacture, trade and finance in eighteenth-century England. It throws light on economic fluctuations and on the changing conditions of the wage-earners. The approach is that of an economist and use is made of hitherto neglected statistics. But treatment and language are simple. The book is intended not only for the specialist but also for others who turn to the past for its own sake or for understanding the present. This book was first published in 1955.

Book Studies in the Business History of Bristol

Download or read book Studies in the Business History of Bristol written by Charles Harvey and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Klappentext: Recent years have seen the coming of age of regional studies, historical and social scientific. The general result has been a deepening in our understanding of the processes of economic and social change. Studies in the Business History of Bristol is the outcome of increased scholarly concern with local variations in experience as well as general phenomena; in this case with a business community and industries which hitherto have been neglected. For whilst maritime and Georgian Bristol have received a good deal of attention from historians, much less is known about the very substantial expansion of the city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. With one or two notable exceptions, there has been little research on the businessmen and enterprises whose activities have sustained the regional economy in more recent times. Charles Harvey and Jon Press survey the industrial and economic development of Bristol since 1800 in a wide?ranging introductory chapter which sets the scene for the more detailed studies which follow. Several of these concentrate on the affairs of leading Bristol enterprises, such as Frys, Georges, and Brittons, and examine the factors and personalities which made for their success. Other chapters cover entire industries over long periods, laying the foundations for a much needed economic history of the Bristol region. All the chapters are based upon extensive original research, and cover subjects which, despite their obvious importance, have been largely ignored until now. The text is enlivened through the inclusion of more than forty illustrations, many of which are published for the first time.

Book Black Lives in the English Archives 1500 1677

Download or read book Black Lives in the English Archives 1500 1677 written by Imtiaz Habib and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing an urgently needed archival database of historical evidence, this volume includes both a consolidated presentation of the documentary records of black people in Tudor and Stuart England, and an interpretive narrative that confirms and significantly extends the insights of current theoretical excursus on race in early modern England. Here for the first time Imtiaz Habib collects the scattered references to black people-whether from Africa, India or America-in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, and arranges them into a systematic, chronological descriptive index. He offers an extended historical and theoretical interpretation of the records in six chapters, which serve as an introductory guide to the index even as they articulate a specific argument about the meaning of the records. Both the archival information and interpretive scholarship provide a strong framework from which future historical debates on race in early modern England can proceed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the emergence of the domestic kitchen from the 17th to the middle of the 19th century, Sara Pennell explores how the English kitchen became a space of specialised activity, sociability and strife. Drawing upon texts, images, surviving structures and objects, The Birth of the English Kitchen, 1600-1850 opens up the early modern English kitchen as an important historical site in the construction of domestic relations between husband and wife, masters, mistresses and servants and householders and outsiders; and as a crucial resource in contemporary heritage landscapes.
