Book Bringing the Monster to Its Knees

Download or read book Bringing the Monster to Its Knees written by Ed Gruver and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-08-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing The Monster to its Knees: Ben Hogan, Oakland Hills, and the 1951 U.S. Open is the first full-length book on a victory that the four-time U.S. Open champion always maintained was the "most satisfying" of his long and storied Hall of Fame career. It fills an important void in previous books on Hogan's tournament play, books covering his championship quests from Merion in 1950 to the Olympic Club in San Francisco in 1955 to Cherry Hills in 1960. The 1951 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills is unique in that it represents the first time the USGA deliberately altered a course for a championship, a practice that became common in the years that followed and continues to this day. The result was "The Monster," a creation of famed course architect Robert Trent Jones. It remains the most infamous course layout in history and arguably the most torturous test ever presented to golfers anywhere. Overcoming chronic pain that was a vestige of his near-fatal car crash in 1949, a field filled with future Hall of Fame players, and a course so devilish in its design that it was labeled "Oakland Hells," Hogan called his record-setting final round 67 in the '51 Open the "greatest round I have ever played." He then issued one of the most famous quotes in sports history: "I'm glad I brought this course—this monster—to its knees."

Book YOU CALL IT SPORTS BUT I SAY IT S A JUNGLE OUT THERE

Download or read book YOU CALL IT SPORTS BUT I SAY IT S A JUNGLE OUT THERE written by Dan Jenkins and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last quarter century, Dan Jenkins has been fixing his cold-eyed stare and wisecracking style on the real-life Billy Clyde and Kenny Lee Pucketts of the sports world. You Call It Sports, But I Say It’s a Jungle Out There is a collection of his best work from Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Golf Digest, and his nationally syndicated column, and includes a stack of new pieces written especially for this book. Jenkins spares no one in his search for the culprits who have taken the fun out of sports: NFL owners and refs, PGA Tour administrators, basketball players who can’t read, tennis players who can’t speak English (or say anything worth hearing when they do). He also finds things worth celebrating: the electric charge given off by Arnold Palmer at his best, the excitement of a truly great college football game, or a real heavyweight champion, like Joe Louis. Overflowing with good ol’ boys, great one-liners, famous sporting events, and barroom tales, this is the best of Dan Jenkins—which is to say, it’s as good as sportswriting gets anywhere.

In the fractured desert kingdom of Seiran, the demons of wind, fire, and waves faded into fairy tales. But when a cult of strangers arrives looking for a djinn, people are forced to ponder the possibility someone around them is more than they seem. And to worsen this thought, the strangers are asking for Zaira, a fugitive and alleged murderer. Zaira is a djinn indeed, but she's no killer. A thief maybe, a criminal sentenced into a human body, but she has nothing to do with any human deaths. She's without power, only helped by the brash mercenary Ezair, striving to untangle this web of intrigue before either the guards or the cult gets to her, leaving the real killer on the loose. They soon realize that Zaira isn't the only djinn in town, and this simple murder isn't so simple either. As the pair forms an unlikely friendship, gathering allies from Kahlaran's highest and lowest class, a much larger conspiracy unfolds, and enemies more powerful than they could imagine reveal themselves. Discovering the truth isn't just personal now - it might be the only option to prevent the war about to engulf the desert. When swords and wits fail, can Zaira break the shackles locking away her powers - or will they succumb to the manipulation of their foes. Book The Odette C Bell Fantasy Bundle

Download or read book The Odette C Bell Fantasy Bundle written by Odette C. Bell and published by Odette C. Bell. This book was released on with total page 1243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you ready for four adventure-packed fantasies from Odette C. Bell? Consisting of the complete Gladys the Guard, Agent of Light, Superheroes Don’t Wear Heels, and The Witch and the Commander, this bundle is over 300,000 words of action, adventure, and romance, so dive in today and soar free with Odette C. Bell adventures. Gladys the Guard Gladys is a mild-mannered girl, living in a mild-mannered town. Working in a local haberdashery store, she stacks pastel-colored yarns and sticks labels on jam jars. She’s single, carless, and lives with her mad grandma. The only interesting thing about her is also the saddest: Gladys is unusually good at arcade games. But when strange, yowling, terribly violent things happen in town, Gladys soon finds out she might be the only haberdashery store attendant who can stop them, and that, luckily for everyone else, her skills with plastic guns extend to the real variety. … Agent of Light Agent Mira works for a shadowy agency called (imaginatively) the Agency. She forms part of the line of defense between good and bad - between Heaven itself and the fiery depths of Hell. When she’s plunged into fights beyond her skills, they push her straight into the arms of the Agency’s finest officer, Michael. From the sudden appearance of a childlike angel, to the unwanted attention of the police, Mira won’t catch a break. Good – Hell doesn’t want her to. It has a plan, and Mira will fulfil it or be bled dry of every drop of her light and life. … Superheroes Don’t Wear Heels Annie hates superheroes, a fact she will freely and loudly admit to anyone who will listen. They are a drain on public resources and give people the mistaken belief that anyone can look good in stretch tights. If only the city spent less on keeping buffoons in capes and more on effective disaster planning, the world would be a better place. Superheroes aren't the solution; they're the problem. Annie’s so sure superheroes aren't worth the colored plastic they've been molded from, that it takes a plot of the rather epic supervillain kind to prove her wrong. It's a hard lesson to learn, and one that involves far more kabooms, pows, capes, and dashing tights-wearing men than your average reality check. But at the end of the day, a lesson’s a lesson, even if it carries a shrink ray. … The Witch and the Commander Abby is a witch; she has a broom and a cat named Charlie. But around these parts witches aren’t popular. So when she finds herself at the mercy of an ancient spell with no one to rely on but a distant man, she must count on more than her magic to survive. Pembrake can’t stand her at first. But her endearing charm and innocence soon grow on him. Dangerous, because it will drive him to protect her, and that may prove impossible.
