Download or read book Young Citizens of the World written by Marilynne Boyle-Baise and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young Citizens of the World takes a clear stance: Social studies is about citizenship education that is informed, deliberative, and activist—citizenship not only as a noun, something one studies, but as a verb, something one DOES. Its holistic, multicultural approach is based on this clear curricular and pedagogical purpose. Straightforward, engaging, and highly interactive, the book encourages students (and their teachers) to become informed, think it through, and take action. Each chapter is written as a civic engagement which is teacher-ready for use in elementary classrooms. A set of six teaching strategies that are constructive, inquiry-driven, dramatic, and deliberative bring the curricular framework to life through intensive, integrated meaningful studies of special places, important people, and significant times. Readers are invited to rehearse the projects in their social studies education courses and then to reinterpret them for their classrooms. The projects are supported by important resources for teaching, including supportive children’s literature, links to internet sites, and visual sources and by a Companion Website that enhances and extends the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Rant and a Road Trip' chronicles an alternative holiday, you might say, a heart-on-the-sleeve road trip. Its not so much about where Brendan OLeary went, but what he found when he got there and the people he met along the way. This journal covers five weeks spent on the road, drifting from town to town and motel to motel, living out of a suitcase and, for the most part, never knowing where the next stop will be. But believe it when OLeary tells you that it can be a very liberating experience, seeing another town, another diner, another motel, the story continuing as he travels to new places. Nothing can beat the feeling that comes from unexpected discoveries made while traveling. As you travel through the pages of this journal, youll see what OLeary sees and feel what he feels. From New Jersey to Texas to California, OLeary shares his thoughts about the places he visits and the people he meets. Written as very personal journal entries, OLeary examines the essence of America through his experiences and shares the ups and downs of living life on the road.

Book excerpt: In contemporary popular culture, armed women take center stage - but how can they be read from a feminist perspective? How do films, comics, and TV series depict the newly fashionable gunwomen between objectification and feminist empowerment? The contributions to this volume ask this question from different vantage points in cultural and literary studies, film and visual culture studies, history, and art history. They examine military and civic gun cultures, the rediscovery of historical armed women and revolutionaries, cultural phenomena such as gangsta rap, narcocultura and US politics, Bollywood and French cinema, and distinct genres such as the graphic novel, the romance novel, or the German police procedural Tatort.

Book Vagabond Chic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gloria Jean
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2016-06-08
  • ISBN : 1683480791
  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book Vagabond Chic written by Gloria Jean and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle-aged, Single White Female Takes a Drive 3 months, 10,000 miles alone to the middle of nowhere. “So how was your trip?” they asked. First of all, she turned 50. Isn’t that how it goes with aging? It was an outrage—how did this happen? Her children grown, husband gone to cancer, their business sold—Gloria Jean had reached middle age; she was on her own. Next! Was it a bucket list thing, life too short? Didn’t matter, Vagabond Chic beckoned; the first day of the rest of something lay ahead as her bold vision materialized, and once inspired, the odyssey seemed to plan itself. Months of research stretched to two years of getting prepared—a journey all its own. “We do not take a trip,” said John Steinbeck in his Travels with Charley. “A trip takes us.” This would come to mind many times as her May to September journey commenced. She drove the main streets of outer space—small towns, cheap motels, an assortment of critters, and more than once, a high spirited, didn’t-see-it-coming, moment. Train whistles echoed divine exhilaration across the prairie, as America was browsed beyond any route imagined, passing unnoticed along northern borders—Lake Superior to Fargo, the quiet solace of Wounded Knee in Dakota; the eureka moment in Hathaway, Montana; and the extraordinary personal discovery in Sheridan, Wyoming. Isolation weighed heavy at times, but the search for her personal holy grail weaves a compelling, serendipitous plot straight to its unforeseen conclusion. If it’s courage you seek for your own long-held inner something: “Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway.” Oprah said.

Book The World S First Quip Thesaurus with Literally Billions of Quips

Download or read book The World S First Quip Thesaurus with Literally Billions of Quips written by Caleb Spalding Atwood and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literally Billions of Quips, in the Worlds First Quip Thesaurus title has to be the most preposterous claim in history, excepting, of course, claims that Obamacare will reduce costs, etc. Whats shocking, is that the Quip Thesaurus explains how to create literally billions of quips in the first two dozen pages, coupled with another dozen pages in an appendix. Even with a mere two billion, thats an average in excess of 55.5 million per page. Atwood distinguishes quips from jokes on the basis of their objectives. The difference between them, he maintains, is that the objective of jokes is to get laughs while the objective of quips is to express opinions. He advocates employing alliteration and rhyme in quips because, they are the music of language that increase the likelihood that opinions will make impressions, have staying power and be repeated. Insofar as the sub-title Resource for writers when good enough isnt is concerned, extensive lists of verbs, adverbs and adjectives sans, definitions listed alphabetically in Quip Thesaurus appendices for creating quips, are convenient resources for anyone looking for the most effective words to express themselves or anxious to confirm those they have in mind are the most effective. All such words are in dictionaries, of course, but wading hundreds of thousands of definitions in tiny print to find them can be a tedious, tiresome and time-consuming task.
