Book excerpt: Abstract: This thesis articulates the importance of studying the experiences, identities, and perceptions of Latino visitors to mainstream art museums. Art museums visitorships are predominantly white, non-Latino, affluent and middle-class, and not even close to representative of the American populace. With the shifting demographics of the country and the static demographics of museum visitors, art museums find themselves in dire need of attracting new and more diverse publics. The Latino population is the fastest growing demographic in the United States, and one that has been grossly underexamined within museum scholarship. Given the paucity of research in this area, I drew primarily from work published by academics, industry researchers, museum evaluators, as well as from the exhibition histories and programming of varied art institutions across the United States, to develop an initial picture of how art museums have considered and engaged Latino audiences. I examine the usefulness the theoretical work of Carol Duncan and Gloria Anzaldúa in framing a study of Latino visitors to art museums, and conclude with recommendations for how art museums, researchers, and other interested scholars can work to build the field of Latino visitor studies.

In January 1959, a U.S. Senate Committee, of which John and Robert Kennedy were members, was investigating Mafia activities. This first volume gathers chronologically information about the life and deeds of the young Fidel Castro, from 1945 until his ascendance to power on January 1959, and the Coup of President Urrutia in July of that year. High ranking officials conspired to take Castro out of power. Alerted by the KGB, Castro worked to destroy the conspiracy and establish his solid alliance with the Mafia. The second volume, on which Gutierrez is now working, begins with these actions and concludes on Friday, November 22, 1963, the moment in Dallas that changed America and the world.

As such, the rivalry between these two capitals has become productive not only for the cities themselves, but also for Spain as a whole. One hundred years ago, at the onset of the Historical Avant-Garde in Spain, the connections between Barcelona and Madrid consisted of a complicated web of politics, friendships, publications, and inter-art collaborations. Over the last century, the antagonistic relationship between these two cultural capitals has been dismissed as simply a fact of life and thereby scholars, for the most part, have focused only on Barcelona or Madrid when addressing this cultural moment. By delving deep into the myriad of cultural and political complexities that surround these two cities from the onset of Futurism (1909) to the arrival of Surrealism in Spain (1929), a complex social and cultural network is revealed. Networking between artists, poets, journalists and thinkers connected avant-garde Barcelona and Madrid, thereby creating synergy for this artistic and literary movement. In a hybrid, transdisciplarian, translingual and historical approach using a wide range of visual and textual artifacts, the complexity of interactions described here opens our imagination to new ways of thinking about culture.
