Book The Concept of Treaty in International Law

Download or read book The Concept of Treaty in International Law written by Jan Klabbers and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1996-04-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether or not a certain norm is legally binding upon international actors may often depend on whether or not the instrument which contains the norm is to be regarded as a treaty. In this study, the author argues that instruments which contain commitments are, "ex" "hypothesi," treaties. In doing so, he challenges popular notions proclaiming the existence of morally and politically binding agreements and so-called soft law'. Such notions, Klabbers argues, are internally inconsistent and founded upon untenable presumptions. Moreover, they find little support in the pertinent decisions of municipal and international courts and tribunals. The book addresses issues of importance not only for academics working in international law, constitutional law and political science, but also for practitioners involved in the making, implementation and enforcement of international agreements.

Book Cinematic Rotterdam

Download or read book Cinematic Rotterdam written by Floris Paalman and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication zooms in on the part cinema has played in urban development between 1920 and 1980. Rotterdam acts as an inspiring example, as observed from an international perspective. This city has its very own history in film. Besides providing the backdrop for a variety of feature films and avant-garde classics, Cinematic Rotterdam describes how the city has established and maintained its identity through thousands of promotional and educational films and television programmes. This diverse collection of filmed material presents an audiovisual map of Rotterdams emergence as a modern city. Written by film scholar Floris Paalman, Cinematic Rotterdam is not only a thorough study of the audiovisual history of Rotterdam but is more especially a conceptual exploration of a hidden dimension of the city itself. Besides being an exhaustive reference work for policymakers, clients, producers and researchers in architecture, media and social studies, this overview makes a fascinating visual guide for anyone interested in looking at the city of Rotterdam from a different angle" -- Publicaciones Arquitectura y Arte.

Book Exploring Big Historical Data The Historian s Macroscope Second Edition

Download or read book Exploring Big Historical Data The Historian s Macroscope Second Edition written by Shawn Graham and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, more and more kinds of historical data become available, opening exciting new avenues of inquiry but also new challenges. This updated and expanded book describes and demonstrates the ways these data can be explored to construct cultural heritage knowledge, for research and in teaching and learning. It helps humanities scholars to grasp Big Data in order to do their work, whether that means understanding the underlying algorithms at work in search engines or designing and using their own tools to process large amounts of information.Demonstrating what digital tools have to offer and also what 'digital' does to how we understand the past, the authors introduce the many different tools and developing approaches in Big Data for historical and humanistic scholarship, show how to use them, what to be wary of, and discuss the kinds of questions and new perspectives this new macroscopic perspective opens up. Originally authored 'live' online with ongoing feedback from the wider digital history community, Exploring Big Historical Data breaks new ground and sets the direction for the conversation into the future.Exploring Big Historical Data should be the go-to resource for undergraduate and graduate students confronted by a vast corpus of data, and researchers encountering these methods for the first time. It will also offer a helping hand to the interested individual seeking to make sense of genealogical data or digitized newspapers, and even the local historical society who are trying to see the value in digitizing their holdings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's word illumines the darkness of society. Groen van Prinsterer's Unbelief and Revolution is a foundational work addressing the inherent tension between religion and modernity. As a historian and politician, Groen was intimately familiar with the growing divide between secular culture and the church in his time. Rather than embrace this division, these lectures, originally published in 1847, argue for a renewed interaction between the two spheres. Groen's work served as an inspiration for many contemporary theologians, and as a mentor to Abraham Kuyper, he had a profound impact on Kuyper's famous public theology. Harry Van Dyke, the original translator, reintroduces this vital contribution to our understanding of the relationship between religion and society.

Book Eric Drummond and his Legacies

Download or read book Eric Drummond and his Legacies written by David Macfadyen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the first institution of global governance was conceived and operated. It provides a new assessment of its architect, Eric Drummond, the first Secretary-General of the League of Nations, appointed a century ago. The authors conclude that he stands in the front rank of the 12 men who have occupied the post of Secretary-General of the League or its successor, the UN. Part 1 describes his character and leadership. His influence in shaping the International Civil Service, the ‘beating heart’ of the League, is the subject of Part 2, which also shows how the young staff he appointed responded with imagination and creativity to the political, economic and social problems that followed World War I. Part 3 shows the influence of these early origins on today’s global organizations and the large scale absorption of League policies, programmes, practices and staff into the UN and its Specialized Agencies.
