Book Decline of the Corporate Community

Download or read book Decline of the Corporate Community written by Eelke M. Heemskerk and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, much of big business in the industrialized Western world has been organized around particular corporate societies—notoriously referred to as “old boy” networks. With the recent drift toward a more liberal market economy, however, these networks have been showing signs of decline—in some cases, all but disappearing. Eelke M. Heemskerk combines formal network analysis and interviews with key members of the corporate elite in order to examine how this decline has affected Dutch capitalism. Even in a liberal market economy, however, corporate directors need social networks to communicate and coordinate their strategic decisions, and Decline of the Corporate Community considers the shift of the corporate elite to the new private and informal circles where networking takes place.

Drawing on a range of case studies, including the Black Death, the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and the Fukushima disaster, the authors examine how societies dealt with shocks and hazards and their potentially disastrous outcomes. They reveal the ways in which the consequences and outcomes of these disasters varied widely not only between societies but also within the same societies according to social groups, ethnicity and gender. They also demonstrate how studying past disasters, including earthquakes, droughts, floods and epidemics, can provide a lens through which to understand the social, economic and political functioning of past societies and reveal features of a society which may otherwise remain hidden from view. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Download or read book Dutch Legal Culture written by E. Blankenburg and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-07-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Netherlands are a small country, but they have many laws. In handling them, Dutch lawyers tend to be pragmatic: they use them to solve problems, not to create additional ones. If they do create problems, they try to find a way around them. If must be, they ignore them. Only if even that meets with resistance, they change them. Because of its non-legalistic learnings, Dutch legal culture favoured a pragmatic public administration, a mild penal climate and an informal civil justice. This book contains a `journey' through selected aspects of Dutch legal culture which is presented by comparing, the Court System, the Legal Profession, Informal Justice in Civil Courts, Criminal Policy and a very Dutch legal term `beleid'.

Book Handbook of Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction

Download or read book Handbook of Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction written by Ben Wisner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 1191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook provides a comprehensive statement and reference point for hazard and disaster research, policy making, and practice in an international and multi-disciplinary context. It offers critical reviews and appraisals of current state of the art and future development of conceptual, theoretical and practical approaches as well as empirical knowledge and available tools. Organized into five inter-related sections, this Handbook contains sixty-five contributions from leading scholars. Section one situates hazards and disasters in their broad political, cultural, economic, and environmental context. Section two contains treatments of potentially damaging natural events/phenomena organized by major earth system. Section three critically reviews progress in responding to disasters including warning, relief and recovery. Section four addresses mitigation of potential loss and prevention of disasters under two sub-headings: governance, advocacy and self-help, and communication and participation. Section five ends with a concluding chapter by the editors. The engaging international contributions reflect upon the politics and policy of how we think about and practice applied hazard research and disaster risk reduction. This Handbook provides a wealth of interdisciplinary information and will appeal to students and practitioners interested in Geography, Environment Studies and Development Studies.
