Book A Critical Survey of Studies on Malay and Bahasa Indonesia

Download or read book A Critical Survey of Studies on Malay and Bahasa Indonesia written by A. Teeuw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I have aimed at completeness in the sense that all publications known to me, which are wholly or partly devoted to Malay and Bahasa Indonesia (B.I.), or are important for the study of these languages, have been included. Popular publications in non-professional periodicals have been included only exceptionally. All the publications mentioned in the text are incorporated in the Bibliography (p. 91-157). The countless articles in four post-war, semi-professional periodicals in :'1alaya and Indonesia, Dewan Bahasa, Pembina Bahasa Indonesia. 11:1 edan Bahasa, Bahasa dan Budaja, are not mentioned separately in the Bibliography, but sections 33 to 36 contain a survey, as complete and systematic as possible, of the contents of these periodicals in so far as they pertain to the Malay language; nor have I discussed in the text or incorporated in the Bibliography several hundreds of titles of practical textbooks or school-books of Malay or B.I. which are of no importance to the scientific study of these language. These titles have been entered in a separate Appendix (p. 158--171). The fact that completeness was aimed at certainly does not mean that it has been achieved. Especially various recent writings from Indonesia and Malaya may have escaped my attention. Experience has also proved that publications on Malay sometimes appear in the most unexpected places. The qualification above: "publications ... devoted to ... , or impor tant for the study of" Malay and B.I. has been taken in a wide sense.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the leading experts in the history of European Oriental Studies. Their essays present a comprehensive history of the teaching and learning of Arabic in early modern Europe, covering a wide geographical area from southern to northern Europe and discussing the many ways and purposes for which the Arabic language was taught and studied by scholars, theologians, merchants, diplomats and prisoners. The contributions shed light on different methods and contents of language teaching in a variety of academic, scholarly and missionary contexts in the Protestant and the Roman Catholic world. But they also look beyond the institutional history of Arabic studies and consider the importance of alternative ways in which the study of Arabic was persued. Contributors are Asaph Ben Tov, Maurits H. van den Boogert, Sonja Brentjes, Mordechai Feingold, Mercedes García-Arenal, John-Paul A. Ghobrial, Aurélien Girard, Alastair Hamilton, Jan Loop, Nuria Martínez de Castilla Muñoz, Simon Mills, Fernando Rodríguez Mediano, Bernd Roling, Arnoud Vrolijk. Book Brill 325 Years of Scholarly Publishing

Download or read book Brill 325 Years of Scholarly Publishing written by Sytze van der Veen and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008 Royal Brill commemorates its 325th anniversary as a publisher for the world of learning. Such a time-honored pedigree makes Brill the oldest publishing house in the Netherlands, and one of the oldest in the world. Its history goes back to 1683, when Jordaan Luchtmans established himself as a bookseller in Leiden. Five generations of his family ran the bookshop and publishing house on the Rapenburg Canal, near the Main Hall of Leiden University. The Luchtmanses produced a steady stream of scholarly books and served as "Printers to the University." In the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Leiden printer Johannes Brill and his son Evert Jan became involved with the firm. The latter took over the business in 1848, combining it with his father's printing works and continuing it under his own name. Since then the company has been known as "E. J. Brill," which in recent years was shortened to "Brill." Especially in the period between 1850 and 1900 the foundations were laid for a publishing program that still characterizes present-day Brill: Arabic and Oriental studies, languages and linguistics, classical studies and history. In his day Jordaan Luchtmans published six books per year, while Brill's assorted catalogs now offer some six hundred new titles every year. In an ever-changing world the publishing house has managed to persist well over three centuries, adapting itself to circumstances and using the opportunities that came its way. Still, in all its metamorphoses the firm steadfastly clung to its historically grown identity. Brill's longevity is a remarkable story of continuity and change. The research for this book is based on the company archives, which are now housed in the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam Library. With a span of more than three hundred years they offer a fascinating view on the development of Brill, and of the publishing business in general. N.B.: Dit boek is ook beschikbaar in het Nederlands. Download or read book Unbelief and Revolution written by Groen van Prinsterer and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's word illumines the darkness of society. Groen van Prinsterer's Unbelief and Revolution is a foundational work addressing the inherent tension between religion and modernity. As a historian and politician, Groen was intimately familiar with the growing divide between secular culture and the church in his time. Rather than embrace this division, these lectures, originally published in 1847, argue for a renewed interaction between the two spheres. Groen's work served as an inspiration for many contemporary theologians, and as a mentor to Abraham Kuyper, he had a profound impact on Kuyper's famous public theology. Harry Van Dyke, the original translator, reintroduces this vital contribution to our understanding of the relationship between religion and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book contains twenty essays by expert scholars of higher learning in the early modern period. Together they discuss topics that historians of universities have largely ignored: notably the extensive collaboration, and occasional conflicts, between university scholars, instructors, and administrators on the one hand, and students at academies, independent and dependent colleges, gymnasia, and Latin schools on the other. The contributions also cover a wide geographical range, covering universities, schools, academies, and the history of the book, in many European states, and Latin America"--
