Book Willehalm

  • Author : Wolfram Eschenbach
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2013-12-05

  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Willehalm written by Wolfram Eschenbach and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolfram von Eschenbach (fl. c. 1195-1225), best known as the author of Parzival, based Willehalm, his epic poem of military prowess and courtly love, on the style and subject matter of an Old French "chanson de geste." In it he tells of the love of Willehalm for Giburc, a Saracen woman converted to Christianity, and its consequences. Seeking revenge for the insult to their faith, her relatives initiate a religious war but are finally routed. Wolfram's description of the two battles of Alischanz, with their massive slaughter and loss of heroes, and of the exploits of Willehalm and the quasicomic Rennewart, well displays the violence and courtliness of the medieval knightly ideal. Wolfram flavors his brutal account, however, with tender scenes between the lovers, asides to his audience, sympathetic cameos of his characters--especially the women--and, most unusually for his time, a surprising tolerance for 'pagans'.

Book Courage The Adventuress and The False Messiah

This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grimmelshausen's enduring fame as Germany’s greatest satirical novelist has rested mainly on The Adventerous Simplicissimus, the first of four novels comprising the Simplician cycle. Less well known, though of equal interest for their penetrating and satiric insight into seventeenth-century beliefs and superstitions, are the two Simplician tales now made available to English readers in this edition: Courage, The Adventuress, the fictional biography of a camp follower in the Thirty Years War, a grimly humorous tale told in the earthy language of the people; and The False Messiah, comprising nine chapters from Grimmelshausen’s last work, The Enchanted Bird’s Nest, Part II. The book includes an Introduction with an account of Grimmelshausen’s life, works, and philosophy, as well as critical comment on the two works. Originally published in 1964. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Jozef Isra ls Son of the Ancient People

Download or read book Jozef Isra ls Son of the Ancient People written by Jozef Israëls and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jozef Israels (1824-1911), famous for his portrayals of life in Holland's fishing villages and of scenes from Jewish and peasant life, was the eminence grise of the Hague School. Contemporaries saw him as a latterday Rembrandt, whose art gave his subjects a voice. This representative and extensive survey of his life and work marks the 175th anniversary of Israels's birth. Over one hundred paintings, watercolors, drawings, and etchings are illustrated in color and discussed. Many of these works, drawn from public and private collections in Holland and abroad, have not been exhibited for years. The introductory essays focus on Israels's career and artistic development, his affinity with Rembrandt, and his Jewish background.

An encounter with his birth father, a man of highly regarded military rank and wealth, brings hope by agreeing to provide sufficient funds regularly to ensure Peer's social advancement. However, following his father's unexpected death, the estate's legal heirs severed all financial ties to him. He decides to commit himself to the goal of education, despite the pitifully small funds available to him through his labor, and even invites his impoverished half-sister, Louise, to live with him in his home, which is little more than a hovel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the first work of science fiction in English, Francis Godwin’s The Man in the Moone was published in 1638, pseudonymously and posthumously. The novel, which tells the story of Domingo Gonsales, a Spaniard who flies to the moon by geese power and encounters an advanced lunar civilization, had an enormous impact on the European imagination for centuries after its initial publication. With its discussion of advanced ideas about astronomy and cosmology, the novel is an important example of both popular fiction and scientific speculation. This Broadview Edition includes a critical introduction that places the text in its scientific and historical contexts. The rich selection of appendices includes related writings by Godwin and his predecessors and contemporaries on magnetism, human flight, voyages to real and unreal lands, and the possibility of extra-terrestrial life.
