While many historians have sought an answer by investigating the development of parliamentary institutions in emerging national monarchies and the wider autonomy enjoyed by various city-states within their own borders, James D. Tracy concentrates instead on a relatively neglected phenomenon at an intermediate level of political organization—the self-governing province. Focusing on the province of Holland during the reigns of Charles V and Philip II (1506–1566), Tracy argues convincingly that Holland effectively underwent an apprenticeship in self-government. The seven provinces of the Dutch Republic—among which Holland was the richest and most populous—were the first in history to govern themselves by a consensus among their towns and nobles. The foundations for this internal cohesion were put in place long before the Dutch Revolt; first by medieval provincial dynasties, then by the dukes of Burgundy, and finally by the House of Habsburg. At the turn of the sixteenth century, Holland was urbanized to a surprising degree, with over forty percent of its population residing in some thirty small and mid-sized towns. Forced by external threats to rise above their economic rivalries, the towns joined together through the forum of the provincial parliament, or States of Holland, which came to assume a primary role in the management of public finances. While noting that the growing autonomy of Holland did not make the Dutch Revolt inevitable, Tracy points out that the revolt could hardly have succeeded without provinces that already had a tradition of managing their own affairs. In the broader context of European political institutions, the circumstances that permitted the provincial states to assume many of the functions of government illustrate not only the capacity for self-government but also the formation of genuine body politics. In recent years, the post-medieval landscape has attracted new interest from archaeologists, historians, and geographers concerned to understand the development of the historic environment. One of the key structuring elements within these landscapes from the sixteenth century until the aftermath of the Second World War was undoubtedly the landed estate. However, it was not until the late nineteenth century that any systematic attempt to quantify the presence of these estates was undertaken, prompted by the move to democratic reform and the persistent link between political power and landed wealth. Yet the importance of the landed estate in structuring power, social relationships, and both agricultural and industrial production was not limited to the UK. From the eighteenth century, the link between the UK estates and patterns of landholding and exploitation in the colonies became increasingly complex and recursive. This volume explores the relationships between the form and structure of British and Colonial estate landscapes, their agricultural management and the political structures and social relationships they reproduced. The articles address themes as diverse as the creation and development of the agrarian landscape, improvement, ornamental landscapes and gardens and estate architecture. Overall, it highlights the wealth and diversity of existing scholarship and suggests new directions for post-medieval archaeology in this dynamic area of research.

This journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany in the nineteenth century. Numerous articles have been published by recognized experts in this field, along with a multitude of illustrations, including maps, prints and photographs. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions and discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermann's Maps contains a bibliography of over 3400 maps, the complete series of maps published in Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War. Besides the bibliography 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic colored maps are included in Petermann's Maps. These maps can also be viewed on the CD-ROM accompanying the book. An extensive introduction precedes the cartobibliography proper, placing Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in its historical context. The introduction describes the history of geography from the eighteenth century onwards, outlining the development of the study of the science of cartography in Germany. The major role the founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played in these developments is discussed at length. The author, Jan Smits, has been in charge of the map collection of the Royal Library at The Hague since 1979. The series The Utrecht Studies in the History of Cartography in which Petermann's Maps appears as volume III, has been prepared under the direction of the Research Program Explokart of the University of Utrecht and is aimed at both researchers and laymen with an interest in these matters.

Sailing for the East is part ten of the Utrecht Studies of the History of Cartography. Includes 600 full color images, CD-ROM with appendices.Gunter Schilder graduated from Vienna University and has worked in the Netherlands at the Utrecht University on the history of cartography since 1971. In 1981 he was appointed professor of the history of cartography, a position he continued until his retirement in 2005. Schilder has written numerous publications on the history of Dutch cartography and discoveries, and as a result has agumented the knowledge of and appreciation for Dutch cartography in its Golden AgeHans D. Kok attended the Dutch Government Civil Aviation Flying Training School and later joined KLM- Royal Dutch Airlines. His interest in navigation and maps stems from his early days of navigating across oceans and polar areas, practising the old techniques, using sextants and other specific navigational instruments. His map collection comprises maps and charts from 1560 till 1800, focusing on the sea-routes from Amsterdam to Jakarta, formerly Batavia, in the Dutch East Indies. He is currently on the Board of Editors of Caert-Thresoor in Holland, and is the Chairman of IMCoS, the International Map Collectors' Society in London.
