Download or read book Poor bashing written by Jean Swanson and published by Between The Lines. This book was released on 2001 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special language of poor-bashing disguises the real causes of poverty, hurts and excludes people who are poor, cheapens the labour of people who have jobs, and takes the pressure off the rich. Swanson, a twenty-five year veteran of anti-poverty work, exposes the ideology of poor-bashing in a clear, forceful style. She examines how media "poornography" operates when reporters cover poverty stories. She also reveals how government and corporate clients use poor-bashing focus groups. To make the book even more useful Swanson includes key chapters on the history of poor-bashing.

Many features of our basic institutions are being transformed and some of the values on which they were based are being weakened or swept away to be replaced by others. As this Royal Commission indicated in its first report, Challenges and Choices, the scope and implications of these changes call "into question basic assumptions, values, and institutions at every level of society, from the shop floor to the cabinet room, to the international economic system," but while many values change, others endure."--

Download or read book Reflections on Canadian Character written by Bob Couchman and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reflections on Canadian Character: From Monarch Park to Monarch Mountain, Bob Couchman offers a critical examination of Canada’s social-welfare state and its evolution. The story begins in the 1940s in Monarch Park, a working-class neighbourhood where the community provided assistance and care when people were in need, and government programs were viewed as a temporary helping hand for those who were destitute or suffering. In the 1950s and 1960s, government expanded its social-welfare agenda and Canadian attitudes began to change. Social programs that were intended to provide short-term aid came to be viewed as a universal right, something all Canadians were entitled to, regardless of need or financial situation. Couchman witnessed first-hand the effects of this shift away from collective responsibility and toward individual entitlement. While Canadians increasingly depend on government for aid, many programs fail to provide adequate support. Such failures, combined with the fundamental change in the character of Canadians, threaten our very future as a caring society.
