Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing with water provides a medical and social history of English spas and hydropathic centres from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. It argues that demand for healing rather than leisure drove the growth of a number of inland resorts which became renowned for expertise and treatment facilities. These aspects were actively marketed to doctors and patients. It assesses the influence of these centres on broader patterns of resort development, leisure and sociability in Britain. The study explores ideas about water’s healing potential and the varied ways it was used to maintain good health and treat a variety of illnesses. Water cures were endorsed by both orthodox and unorthodox practitioners and attracted growing numbers of patients into the twentieth century. It examines how institutions and skilled workers shaped the development of specialist resorts and considers why the NHS support for spa treatment declined from the 1960s.

Book A Guide to the Use of the Buxton Waters Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Guide to the Use of the Buxton Waters Classic Reprint written by William Henry Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Use of the Buxton Waters I have often felt that it might be desirable to give the public a very cheap work on the Buxton Waters, - so cheap as to be within the reach of every class of people resorting to Buxton, - and giving, as simply as possible, an account of the mode of using the baths and the waters, with the necessary cautions against using them improperly. I should probably have done this long ago, had I not felt myself withheld by considerations which no longer exist; and I can only trust that the publication, founded as it is on much observation, will he found useful. This little pamphlet cannot he supposed as being meant to supersede the larger and fuller account which I have published of "Buxton and its Waters." Some few additional observations will be found in this edition, and the work has been again carefully revised.
