Book An Inquiry Into the Law of Negro Slavery in the United States of America Vol 1

Download or read book An Inquiry Into the Law of Negro Slavery in the United States of America Vol 1 written by Thomas Read Rootes Cobb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Law of Negro Slavery in the United States of America, Vol. 1: To Which Is Prefixed, an Historical Sketch of Slavery I enter upon an untrodden field. Stroud's "Sketch of the Law of Slavery" is and was intended only as an Abolition pamphlet; Wheeler's "Law of Slavery" professes to be only a compend of abridged decisions on prominent questions. An elementary treatise, purporting to define the Law of Slavery as it exists in the United States, has not been brought to my notice. As a pioneer I doubt not I have, like others, frequently deviated from the true course. Reflection has induced me to change many positions which I had committed to paper. Subsequent reflection, and the exposition of other minds, may induce me to change some now committed to the public. This work has been prepared at leisure hours, in the midst of a laborious practice. These have varied in length from a few moments to a few days. The natural result - disconnection and incoherency - may be detected by experienced eyes. Book A Brief History of Slavery

Download or read book A Brief History of Slavery written by Jeremy Black and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking and important book that raises essential issues crucial not only for understanding our past but also the present day. In this panoramic history, Jeremy Black tells how slavery was first developed in the ancient world, and reaches all the way to the present in the form of contemporary crimes such as trafficking and bonded labour. He shows how slavery has taken many forms throughout history and across the world - from the uprising of Spartacus, the plantations of the West Indies, and the murderous forced labour of the gulags and concentration camps. Slavery helped to consolidate transoceanic empires and helped mould new world societies such as America and Brazil. Black charts the long fight for abolition in the nineteenth century, looking at both the campaigners as well as the harrowing accounts of the enslaved themselves. Slavery is still with us today, and coerced labour can be found closer to home than one might expect.

Book Many Thousands Gone

  • Author : Ira Berlin
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-01
  • ISBN : 9780674020825

Download or read book Many Thousands Gone written by Ira Berlin and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today most Americans, black and white, identify slavery with cotton, the deep South, and the African-American church. But at the beginning of the nineteenth century, after almost two hundred years of African-American life in mainland North America, few slaves grew cotton, lived in the deep South, or embraced Christianity. Many Thousands Gone traces the evolution of black society from the first arrivals in the early seventeenth century through the Revolution. In telling their story, Ira Berlin, a leading historian of southern and African-American life, reintegrates slaves into the history of the American working class and into the tapestry of our nation. Laboring as field hands on tobacco and rice plantations, as skilled artisans in port cities, or soldiers along the frontier, generation after generation of African Americans struggled to create a world of their own in circumstances not of their own making. In a panoramic view that stretches from the North to the Chesapeake Bay and Carolina lowcountry to the Mississippi Valley, Many Thousands Gone reveals the diverse forms that slavery and freedom assumed before cotton was king. We witness the transformation that occurred as the first generations of creole slaves--who worked alongside their owners, free blacks, and indentured whites--gave way to the plantation generations, whose back-breaking labor was the sole engine of their society and whose physical and linguistic isolation sustained African traditions on American soil. As the nature of the slaves' labor changed with place and time, so did the relationship between slave and master, and between slave and society. In this fresh and vivid interpretation, Berlin demonstrates that the meaning of slavery and of race itself was continually renegotiated and redefined, as the nation lurched toward political and economic independence and grappled with the Enlightenment ideals that had inspired its birth.
