Book excerpt: In this fascinating collection of articles, stories and fun facts you will learn about "the best place not on the map" - Bridgetown, Virginia on the Eastern Shore. Dating to the early 1600's, this settlement evolved into a bustling town where Bayside Road meets Hungars Creek. In recent years, it has "devolved" to a cross roads with two churches, a few homes, and the remains of long gone buildings. Written with a sense of the mystery of history, "The Bridgetown Files" was created as a home school project by Ann M. Hess, Elan M. Hess and Forest B. Flynn, residents of Church Neck Road in Bridgetown. The files will appeal to both seasoned historians as well as children who are just learning about the history of the Eastern Shore. Filled with historical photos, humorous illustrations, the book even includes a great chocolate chip cookie recipe!

Book Slave Society in the City

Download or read book Slave Society in the City written by Pedro L. V. Welch and published by James Currey. This book was released on 2003 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the first specialised treatments of an Anglophone Caribbean port-town by a contemporary historian. Having adeptly mined the existing archival data and statistics on Bridgetown, Pedro Welch shares with the reader these nuggets of information that contribute immensely to our understanding of the way slave societies functioned in the Caribbean. This book shows how life in the urban slave society departed significantly from that of the rural plantation. There is considerable evidence indicating that slaves and freed persons found and utilised 'room to manoeuvre options' in that urban context, which allowed some of them to amass small fortunes and landholdings, act relatively freely and independently and occasionally be acknowledged almost as the equal of their white counterparts. Several areas of urban social formation are analysed in the study. Demographic, trade and free coloured communities receive detailed treatment. Publication of this work is timely, coinciding as it does with the 375th anniversary of the founding of Bridgetown, Barbados

Book A Mere Country Village

Download or read book A Mere Country Village written by Mary Elgar and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridgetown was the first rural town in Western Australia to be gazetted 150 years ago. Its history is rich and varied, with residents coming from every walk of life throughout those years. To celebrate the sesquicentenary of gazettal in 1868, Bridgetown Historical Society undertook an oral history project to demonstrate how a community was formed, what sustained it and how it grew into the vibrant town we now live in. Forty-three residents, both past and present, were interviewed and their stories, along with stories taken in the 1930s, 1970s and 1980s, have been woven into the chronicle of this town, showing that communities will survive if they care for each other, volunteer gladly and grasp opportunities when they appear. It is a tribute to the early settlers who were not put off by adversity, and the past and present Bridgetonians who choose to live here and make Bridgetown their home.

Book The Making and Unmaking of Colonial Cities

Download or read book The Making and Unmaking of Colonial Cities written by Julia C. Obert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making and Unmaking of Colonial Cities is a comparative study of architectural space in four (post-)colonial capitals: Belfast, Northern Ireland; Windhoek, Namibia; Bridgetown, Barbados; and Hanoi, Vietnam. Each chapter takes up one of these cities, outlining its history of building and urban planning under colonial rule and linking that history to its contemporary shape and scope. This genealogical information is drawn from primary source documents and archival materials. The chapters then look to local literary texts to better understand the lingering impact of colonial building practices on individuals living in (post-)colonial cities today. These texts often foreground the difficulty of moving through a city that can never feel comfortably one's own; legacies of racial segregation, buildings that disregard indigenous resources, and street names that serve as constant reminders of a history of oppression, for example, can produce feelings of anxiety, even of unbelonging, for native subjects. However, the literature also highlights ways in which the subversive wanderings of particular pedestrians—taking shortcuts, trespassing in forbidden places, diverting spaces from their intended uses—can contest 'official' topography. Bodies can therefore move against the power of a repressive regime, at least to some degree, even when that power is literally set in stone. Obert argues for the significance of these small gestures of reclamation, suggesting that we must counterpose the potential flexibility of lived space to the prohibitions of the map in order to more fully understand (post-)colonial power relations.

Download or read book After Doubt written by A. J. Swoboda and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a way to walk faithfully through doubt and come out the other side with a deeper love for Jesus, the church, and its tradition? Can we question our faith without losing it? Award-winning author, pastor, and professor A. J. Swoboda has witnessed many young people wrestle with their core Christian beliefs. Too often, what begins as a set of critical and important questions turns to resentment and faith abandonment. Unfortunately, the church has largely ignored its task of serving people along their journey of questioning. The local church must walk alongside those who are deconstructing their faith and show them how to reconstruct it. Drawing on his own experience of deconstruction, Swoboda offers tools to help emerging adults navigate their faith in a hostile landscape. Doubt is a part of our natural spiritual journey, says Swoboda, and deconstruction is a legitimate space to encounter the living God. After Doubt offers a hopeful, practical vision of spiritual formation for those in the process of faith deconstruction and those who serve them. Foreword by pastor and author John Mark Comer.

Book Urbanisation and Planning in the Third World

Download or read book Urbanisation and Planning in the Third World written by Robert Potter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this book reconsiders the whole question of urbanisation and planning in the Third World. It argues that public involvement, which is now an accepted part of Western planning, should be used more in Third World cities. It shows that many inhabitants of Third World cities are migrants from rural areas and have very definite ideas about what the function of the city should be and what it ought to offer; and it goes on to argue that therefore a planning process which involves more public participation would better serve local needs and would do much more to solve problems than the contemporary approach.
