Download or read book Instrumentation and Monitoring of Integral Bridge Abutment to approach Slab Connection written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iowa Department of Transportation has long recognized that approach slab pavements of integral abutment bridges are prone to settlement and cracking, which manifests as the "bump at the end of the bridge". A commonly recommended solution is to integrally attach the approach slab to the bridge abutment. Two different approach slabs, one being precast concrete and the other being cast-in-place concrete, were integrally connected to side-by-side bridges and investigated. The primary objective of this investigation was to evaluate the approach slab performance and the impacts the approach slabs have on the bridge. To satisfy the research needs, the project scope involved a literature review, survey of Midwest Department of Transportation current practices, implementing a health monitoring system on the bridge and approach slab, interpreting the data obtained during the evaluation, and conducting periodic visual inspections. Based on the information obtained from the testing the following general conclusions were made: The integral connection between the approach slabs and the bridges appear to function well with no observed distress at this location and no relative longitudinal movement measured between the two components; Tying the approach slab to the bridge appears to impact the bridge; The two different approach slabs, the longer precast slab and the shorter cast-in-place slab, appear to impact the bridge differently; The measured strains in the approach slabs indicate a force exists at the expansion joint and should be taken into consideration when designing both the approach slab and the bridge; The observed responses generally followed an annual cyclic and/or short term cyclic pattern over time.

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
Download or read book Settlement of Bridge Approaches written by J.-L. Briaud and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) geotechnical, structural, roadway design, construction, and maintenance engineers; DOT research staff; and personnel in local transportation agencies. This synthesis describes the current state of the practice for the design, construction, and maintenance of bridge approaches to reduce, eliminate, or compensate for settlement at the bridge/abutment/embankment interface or the bump at the end of the bridge. It discusses the geotechnical and structural engineering design and procedural factors to reduce the bump at the end of the bridge, and includes numerous illustrations. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of the state DOTs. It is a supplemental update to Synthesis of Highway Practice 159: Design and Construction of Bridge Approaches (1990). The synthesis identifies and describes techniques that have been used to alleviate the problem of the bump at the end of the bridge including the location and cause of settlement and methods used to reduce settlement. In addition, the types of interaction between various divisions of the DOTs in the design, construction, and maintenance of bridge approaches are addressed.

Download or read book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering written by N. Uddin and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-quality and expedient repair methods are necessary to address concrete deterioration that can occur in bridge structures. Most infrastructure-related applications of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) use hand layup methods. Hand layup is tedious, labor-intensive and results are sensitive to personnel skill level. An alternative method of FRP application is vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). VARTM uses single-sided molding technology to infuse resin over fabrics wrapping large structures, such as bridge girders and columns. There is no research currently available on the interface developed, when VARTM processing is adopted to wrap fibers such as carbon and/ or glass over concrete structures. This chapter investigates the shear and flexural strength gains of a beam by carbon fiber cast on concrete using the VARTM method. The carbon fiber composite was made using Sikadur HEX 103C and low viscosity epoxy resin Sikadur 300. Tests were conducted to determine and document the gains of FRP rehabilitated beams applied by the VARTM method compared to the hand layup method of application. This newly introduced technique to repair and retrofit a simple span I-565 prestressed concrete bridge girder in Huntsville, Alabama, was implemented in the field within two days without any traffic interruption, and the field demonstration of this newly introduced technique to civil infrastructure is presented to the end.
