Download or read book I Choose Life written by Sol and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Choose Life is the true, first person account of two Jewish youths, Sol and Goldie, who survived Nazi concentration camps and transcended despair by choosing life. The book title derives from a harrowing encounter between Sol and the Commandant in Auschwitz. The Nazi cruelly forced Sol to choose between execution by hanging or firing squad. Sol, then 19-years-old, defied him, declaring, If I have a choice, I choose life! Goldie Cukier, a 13-year-old girl, and her older sister were rounded up in a random raid in their neighborhood. An SS guard gave Goldies father the choice of freeing only one of his two daughters. Goldie volunteered to be taken so that her sister would be spared. It was the last she would ever see her family alive. I Choose Life describes idyllic childhoods in Radom and Sosnowiec, Poland, in warm and loving families imbued with Jewish pride and values; years of darkness, suffering, separation, loss and death; raids, selections, forced labor camps, cattle cars, and death marches; and survival in Auschwitz, Mauthausen and Bergen-Belsen. Sol says, A sane person cannot imagine what it was like. For years, Sol and Goldie never shared their stories, not even with each other. Now, they have decided to tell their stories, to leave a legacy to their grandchildren, and to help ensure the Holocaust is never repeated. Sols story is full of adventure and suspense, while Goldies narrative draws the reader into the poignancy of a young girls inner world as she is torn from her family by the Nazis. I Choose Life is two complete and parallel memoirs of survival and rebirth. Together, the two memoirs of I Choose Life illuminate the Holocaust experience in a unique way, offering both male and female perspectives, one told by a person of action and one by a person of feeling, to yield insights into the most monumental tragedy in human history. I Choose Life is distinguished as a Holocaust testament, not only because it is two complete memoirs of a boy and a girl, but ultimately, because the two stories entwine as Sol and Goldie meet in a Displaced Persons camp in post-war Germany. The book explores the challenges of restoration and rebirth, how two youths regained the ability to trust and love, to rebuild new lives after unimaginable losses, and to move to another continent to start a new family and live the American dream. In one of the most peculiar and fascinating chapters of modern Jewish history, Sol and Goldie tell the story of how hundreds of Jewish concentration camp survivors from Europe found an unexpected new Zion in rural Vineland, Jersey, as a community of chicken farmers. I Choose Life is also distinguished by its reliance on historical documents. With the help of the research resources of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Sol and Goldies son Joseph was able to access original historical records which have become newly available to survivors in search of answers about themselves and family members lost in the Holocaust. These documents, some of which are reproduced in the book, enabled Joseph to verify and discover new facts and details, including the name and location of a secret V2 rocket factory, dates of prisoner transports, arrival dates at different camps, and lists of prisoners in which Sols and Goldies names appear. Through an emotional journey, I Choose Life describes the moving discovery of the final events and fate of Sols father, Jacob Finkelstein, following his separation from Sol just a week before liberation in Mauthausen concentration camp. Through research by Joseph, Sol finally learned, while this book was being completed, of the existence of his fathers unmarked grave in Austria. This astounding discovery gave Sol and his family emotional closure, after from 60 years of uncertain guilt that Sol carried with him since the day he and

Book Exchange and the Maiden

Download or read book Exchange and the Maiden written by Kirk Ormand and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage is a central concern in five of the seven extant plays of the Greek tragedian Sophocles. In this pathfinding study, Kirk Ormand delves into the ways in which these plays represent and problematize marriage, thus offering insights into how Athenians thought about the institution of marriage. Ormand takes a two-fold approach. He first explores the legal and economic underpinnings of Athenian marriage, an institution designed to guarantee the legitimate continuation of patrilineal households. He then shows how Sophocles' plays Trachiniae, Electra, Antigone, Ajax, and Oedipus Tyrannus both reinforce and critique this ideology by representing marriage as a homosocial exchange between men, in which women are objects who may attempt—but always fail—to become self-acting subjects. These fresh readings provide the first systematic study of marriage in Sophocles. They draw important connections between drama and marriage as rituals concerned with controlling potentially disruptive female subjectivities.

New material - from Tell Haddad, Ishcali, also from remote Elba - granted new insights. Increased attention was paid to comparison, especially with the Code of Hammurabi. Of continuing controversies, the discussion concerning muskenum, and concerning ÷imdat sarrim may be singled out. A reconsideration of the English translation has resulted in many often, minute changes.

Book excerpt: Jeffrey H. Tigay, A. M. Ellis Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pennsylvania, master teacher and scholar extraordinaire, conservative rabbi and lifelong student of Torah receives due ovation in this exceptional volume, a tribute to his indelible impression on Jewish scholarship and pedagogy. The volume is arranged according to Professor Tigay’s primary topics of interest: deuteronomic studies, ancient Israelite religion and its Near Eastern context, and ancient Israelite literary tradition. The reader will enjoy diverse studies such as “Gender Transformation and Transgression: Contextualizing the Prohibition of Cross-dressing in Deuteronomy 22:5,” “The Problem of Evil in the Book of Job,” and “Linen and the Linguistic Dating of P” and will value the erudition of scholars such as Moshe Greenberg, Emanuel Tov, Gary Rendsburg, William Hallo, and Baruch Levine. In the customary appreciations and throughout the volume, colleagues, students, and friends laud Professor Tigay’s intellectual tenacity, relational warmth, pedagogical prowess, and devotion to Torah. A former student aptly speaks for those who know him best: “A scholar’s immortality lies in his or her work. It rests too in his or her students and in the respect won from his or her colleagues. A Festschrift like this one for Jeff Tigay is merely a token of that legacy, the acknowledgment by his students and colleagues that the work is indeed worth celebrating.” This legacy will surely be a boon and delight to the reader.

Book excerpt: Meet Rabbi Ben, master of Torah, Talmud and Taekwondo, kick-ass computer whiz and a quick study on the dark side of human nature. A knight errant and roving troubleshooter, Ben's clientele invite him into situations where police are unwelcome and discretion is paramount. When $3 million suddenly appears in a California synagogue's bank account, its leaders wonder if their prayers have been answered--until the money evaporates as mysteriously as it appeared. Where did the millions come from? Where did they go? Ben is hired to get some answers. Young, single and handsome--in a short, redheaded way--the congregation's divorcees and unhappy wives scheme to extend Ben's stay, preferably in their beds. Ben fends off their not unwanted advances; he harbors as many secrets as the synagogue leadership. When Ben is mistakenly arrested for the murder of Temple Beit Joseph's beautiful administrator, he plunges into a dangerous, confusing world of mirrors where friends become foes and no one can be trusted. Ben's investigation leads him to a decrepit cemetery, a mysterious private bank, a shofar-blowing part-Korean-Jewish cabinet-maker, a Latino gang-banger, and the ultimate in money laundering techniques. Never mind surviving a hit-and-run murder attempt and defusing a clever bomb in his living room. You don't have to be Jewish to be enthralled by Rabbi Ben's audacity, inventiveness and courage. The Tattooed Rabbi is an engaging, thrilling read from start to finish.

Book Early Mesopotamian Law

Download or read book Early Mesopotamian Law written by Russ VerSteeg and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book synthesizes law in ancient Mesopotamia from its beginnings (roughly 3000 BC) to about 1600 BC. Author Russ VerSteeg explains Mesopotamian law using modern legal categories as points of reference in order to make the subject more accessible to the reader. Early Mesopotamian Law is the first book of its kind, filling a void of information left by most ancient law books, which discuss the law of Ancient Greece and Rome. It brings together information from many books on Mesopotamian history; translations of ancient law collections and documents; as well as monographs, journal articles, and unpublished papers dealing with specialized aspects of Mesopotamian law. This book will be of interest to scholars of Near Eastern studies who wish to have a single volume covering the basics of early Mesopotamian law as well as to law students and lawyers who are interested in legal history. Topics covered include: Part 1: Overview, Justice, Organization and Procedure -- the law collections ("codes"); justice and jurisprudence (the role of law); legal organization and personnel and legal procedure; Part 2: Substantive Law -- personal status; the family; inheritance and succession; criminal law; torts; property; and trade, contracts and business law.
