Book excerpt: BRICE MARDEN The American artist Brice Marden (b. 1938) is one of the great contemporary painters. Brice Marden's first works were the Minimalist monochrome panels of the 1960s, large, austere, 'implacable' oil and wax paintings characterized by a precise coolness. In 1975 Marden had a one-man show at the Guggenheim Museum. Laura Garrard looks at Marden's artistic career, from the early works, the multi-panel works of the 1970s, the Sea Paintings, Grove Group, Greek and landscape works, and the 'Annunciation Series' and Thira. In the 1980s, Brice Marden developed a 'calligraphic' or 'Oriental' art, which appeared in many prints as well as large canvases. Brice Marden studied at Florida Southern College, Lakeland, and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts, receiving aBachelor of Fine Arts in 1961. That year, he worked at Yale NorfolkSummer School in Connecticut. In 1963 he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Yale University at New Haven.He moved to New York City, and worked as a guard in the JewishMuseum. At this time he was married to Pauline Baez, the sister ofJoan Baez, the singer, and had a son, Nicholas. In the mid-1960s, Marden began to have one-man exhibitions (typically at Bykert Gallery, where he had many shows). In 1966 he became an assistant to Robert Rauschenberg. In the late 1960s, Marden began making multi-panel paintings. He worked as a painting instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1969-74. He had solo shows and group shows in Europe (Milan, Turin, Paris, Dusseldorf). In 1975 there was the ten-year retrospective at the Guggenheim in New York, unusual for so young an artist. From 1973, Marden visited Greece every year. Other major shows included a one-man exhibition of drawings (1964-74) at Contemporary Arts Museum, a drawing retrospective at Kunstraum Munich, and the Whitechapel and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam one-man shows of 1981. An exhibition of prints 1961-91 travelled to the Tate Gallery, London, Baltimore Museum of Art and the Musee d'art moderne de la ville de Paris. This is the only full-length appraisal available. It reveals for the first time the essential place these paintings hold in the development of the artist's work. Brice Marden's career is divided into two distinct periods. The first, from the early 1960s to the mid 1980s, is characterized by reduced, often mono-chromatic compositions, and the second, from the mid 1980s to the present, by looser, more expressionistic paintings. The 30 works that comprise this series, all painted in oil and graphite on marble fragments, represent a key transition from Marden's earlier minimal compositions to his later calligraphic ones. The first such work, painted on a remnant of marble the artist found on the island of Hydra, incorporates the organic patterns - rough edges and meandering veins - of the broken stone and marks the introduction of diagonal lines to Marden's work. These intimate and lesser known paintings provide new insight into the evolution of this great artist's work.

The word "encaustic" derives from the Greek term "enkaustikos," meaning "to burn in." The basic technique calls for dry pigments to be mixed with molten wax on a warm palette and applied to any ground or surface. A heat source is passed close to the surface, burning in and fusing the colors. Book excerpt: In 1978, while collecting documentary photographs of the artists' community in Montparnasse from the first decades of the century, Billy Klüver discovered that some previously unassociated photographs fell into significant groupings. One group in particular, showing Picasso, Max Jacob, Moïse Kisling, Modigliani, and others at the Café de la Rotonde and on Boulevard du Montparnasse, all seemed to have been taken on the same day. The people were wearing the same clothes in each shot and had the same accessories. Their ties were knotted the same way and their collars had the same wrinkles. A total of twenty-four photographs—four rolls of film with six photographs each—were eventually found. With the challenge of identifying the date, photographer, and circumstances, Klüver embarked on an inquiry that would illuminate the minute texture of that time and place. Biographical research into the subjects' lives led Klüver to focus on the summer of 1916 as the likely time the photos were taken. He then measured buildings and plotted angles and lengths of shadows in the photographs to narrow the time frame to a spread of three weeks. Further investigation eventually allowed Klüver to identify the photographer as Jean Cocteau and to determine the day that Cocteau had taken the photographs: August 12, 1916. A computer printout of the sun's positions on that date, obtained from the Bureau des Longitudes, together with the length of the shadows, enabled Klver to calculate the time of day of each photograph, and thus to put them in proper sequence. In a tour de force of art historical research, Klüver then reconstructed a scenario of the events of the four hours depicted in the photographs. With evocative attention to detail—noting when Picasso is no longer carrying an envelope or Max Jacob has acquired a decoration in his lapel—Klüver recreates a single afternoon in the lives of Picasso and friends, a group of remarkable people in early twentieth-century Paris. Besides the central "portfolio" of photographs by Cocteau, the book contains additional photographs and drawings, short biographies of all the subjects, and a historical section on the events and activities in the Paris art world at the time.
