Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize • Winner of the 2021 Kate O'Brien Award • Winner of the 2021 Dalkey Emerging Writer Award Sinéad Hynes is a tough, driven, funny young property developer with a terrifying secret. No-one knows it: not her fellow patients in a failing hospital, and certainly not her family. She has confided only in Google and a shiny magpie. But she can't go on like this, tirelessly trying to outstrip her past and in mortal fear of her future. Across the ward, Margaret Rose is running her chaotic family from her rose-gold Nokia. In the neighbouring bed, Jane, rarely but piercingly lucid, is searching for a decent bra and for someone to listen. And Sinéad needs them both. As You Were is about intimate histories, institutional failures, the kindness of strangers, and the darkly present past of modern Ireland; about women's stories and women's struggles; about seizing the moment to be free. Wildly funny, desperately tragic, inventive and irrepressible, As You Were introduces a brilliant voice in Irish fiction with a book that is absolutely of our times.

Book Brevard

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Brevard written by Susan M. Lefler and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brevard, North Carolina, "land of waterfalls," is tucked into a lush valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Brevard was founded as the county seat of Transylvania County in 1861, the year that North Carolina seceded from the Union. Wealthy families from South Carolina's Lowcountry had long summered in the mountains and, even after the war, the region maintained its powerful pull. The arrival of the railroads brought tourists to Brevard from all over the country-including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone-and the logging industry attracted entrepreneurs who made their fortunes here. Brevard reveals the city's rich heritage through a gallery of images: baptism in an icy river, an ostrich race on Main Street, a moonshine still. In these pages, the reader can visit grist mills, waterfalls, and exquisite hotels, explore the booming logging industry, relive parades and downtown scenes, and read the intriguing stories of local folks.

Book The Brevard Rosenwald School

Download or read book The Brevard Rosenwald School written by Betty J. Reed and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, the Brevard Rosenwald School in Transylvania County, North Carolina, opened its doors to African American students from the community and the surrounding area. It was a microcosm of the community it served; teachers and pupils lived on the same streets, shopped in the same stores, worshiped at the same churches, and teachers and parents served on the same committees, confronted similar social and economic problems, and sought each other's advice about issues in daily life. This book is a history of the school, with special attention given to the years 1920 to 1966, and its attempts to improve the education of African Americans in the South. It also focuses on the school's beginnings, development, significance to the community, closing, and the integration process and the Rosenwald community today. The author also presents narratives from former students about their experiences and educational goals, pursuits and accomplishments at the school and later in their lives.

Download or read book North Brevard County written by John T. Manning and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early pioneer settlement of LaGrange Community in Brevard County in 1858 pre-dated the missile launches on North Merritt Island by just one hundred years. During that span of time, the northern part of Brevard County underwent significant growth and development-homes were built, land farmed, businesses established, and churches built. The citrus industry provided North Brevard with a productive agricultural economy that remained strong until the advent of the space age. With the federal government's purchase of the land north of the port of Canaveral in the 1950s, the Cape Canaveral Missile Test Center was established. Later, when more land was needed, the Kennedy Space Center was built on North Merritt Island. Many North Brevard towns, communities, and homesteads disappeared when the governmental acquisition of land forced residents to relocate, but it was this new era of technology that helped shift North Brevard from the farm age to the space age.

Book Coastal Processes Assessment for Brevard County Florida with Special Reference to Test Plaintiffs

Download or read book Coastal Processes Assessment for Brevard County Florida with Special Reference to Test Plaintiffs written by Nicholas C. Kraus and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was prepared as an independent assessment of the coastal physical processes occurring along Brevard County, Florida. The study was conducted for the U.S. Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, in its involvement with the lawsuit Applegate et al. versus the United States of America. Long-term regional beach change is evaluated by analysis of survey data on shoreline position, bathymetry, and beach profiles taken through time. In addition, analysis is specifically made for the properties of two test plaintiffs selected by the Court. Estimates of beach and dune erosion, if any, are calculated for the two test plaintiffs from date of purchase of the properties. Erosion of the beaches and dunes, principally attributed to storms, was estimated at the properties of the two test plaintiffs by compiling storm data and calculating beach and dune change with a numerical model.
