Book Rescue of Sturgeon Species in the Ural River Basin

Download or read book Rescue of Sturgeon Species in the Ural River Basin written by Viktor Lagutov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While almost every aspect of society-nature interactions can be treated as an environmental security issue, the threats to human societies originating from inadequate freshwater management constitute one of the most wi- spread and pressing problems. For thousands of years rivers and river valleys have been the cradle of human civilizations. Rivers have provided not only food and freshwater, but also shelter and means of transportation, and they are still an essential component in every national and regional economy. In turn, growing needs of human societies, accompanied by growing abilities, have caused significant river alterations and ecosystem changes that have resulted in river contamination, biodiversity loss and general riverine ecosystem degradation. The extinction of sturgeon species is one of the most eloquent examples of the negative and irreversible influence of human society on river e- systems. The sturgeon, sometimes called the “living fossil” or living “dinosaur” of the fish world, is known to have lived since the time of the dinosaurs, for at least 250 million years, and is currently on the verge of extinction solely due to anthropogenic impacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-authored symposium volume addresses the vulnerability and continuing decline of numerous sturgeon species and stocks and the intense efforts to manage and protect them. It presents timely, accessible, and directly applicable biological and ecological research leading to more effective conservation and management of North American salmon. Written by scientists, resource managers, and electric utility industry personnel with a shared interest in sturgeon biology and ecology, management, and protection, this book includes life history characteristics relevant to population dynamics, viability, and persistence; upstream and downstream migratory behavior, habitat requirements and local movement; passage technologies; and conservation management and stock enhancement. Most major sturgeon species in America are covered, including shortnose, Atlantic, Gulf, lake and green sturgeon.

Book Strategies for Restoring River Ecosystems

Download or read book Strategies for Restoring River Ecosystems written by R. C. Wissmar and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries and natural resource managers and policymakers need more efficient procedures for identifying sources of variability in ecosystems (natural and managed) and assessing uncertainties of managing and making decisions for developing and implementing river restoration strategies. This book seeks to integrate perspectives on variability of physical and biological functions and concepts of uncertainty in natural and managed systems, into strategies for renewing and conserving river ecosystems. The book explores approaches to understanding and communicating the processes contributing to the variability of different types of river systems, and to assessing major sources of uncertainty in natural and managed river ecosystems.

Download or read book Chasing Giants written by Zeb Hogan and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join Zeb Hogan, host of the National Geographic television show Monster Fish, on the science adventure of a lifetime. On May 1, 2005, a Thai fisherman caught a truly monstrous Mekong giant catfish. At 646 pounds, it captured the world’s attention, and with awe and wonder, it was deemed the largest freshwater fish on record. There was no denying its size, but when biologist and research associate professor Hogan saw a photo of the fish, he wondered if it really was the biggest in the world. To his surprise, no one had systematically sought to answer the question: Which of the giant freshwater species really was the largest? Seeking to answer that question has brought Hogan face to face with massive arapaima and piranha in the Amazon, alligator gar in Texas, pigeon-eating wels catfish in France, stingrays in Cambodia, and the gnarled-toothed sawfish in Australia. Part of his scientific adventure has been captured on Monster Fish, and Hogan now tells the full story of his 25-year quest to understand the mysteries of some of the oldest, largest, most bizarre creatures on Earth. The fate of these giant fish motivates Hogan to understand the various species he studies. The megafish’s numbers are dwindling, and the majority of them face extinction. In this book, he teams up with award-winning journalist Stefan Lovgren to tell, for the first time, the remarkable and troubling story of the world’s largest freshwater fish. It is a story that stretches across the globe, chronicling a race against the clock to find and protect these ancient leviathans before they disappear forever. Chasing Giants: In Search of the World’s Largest Freshwater Fish combines science, adventure, and wonder to provide insights into the key role the massive fish of our lakes and rivers play in our past, present, and future.

Book Fundamentals of Conservation Biology

Download or read book Fundamentals of Conservation Biology written by Malcolm L. Hunter, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FUNDAMENTALS OF CONSERVATION BIOLOGY “This book is about hope in the face of forces that would degrade our world. This book is about the rich tapestry of life that shares our world now and about how we can maintain it, sometimes in places that we protect and set aside, more often in places where we share the lands and waters with a wide range of other species.” For more than 30 years, Fundamentals of Conservation Biology has been a valued mainstay of the literature, serving both to introduce new students to this ever-changing topic, and to provide an essential resource for academics and researchers working in the discipline. In the decade since the publication of the third edition, concerns about humanity’s efforts to conserve the natural world have only grown deeper, as new threats to biodiversity continue to emerge. This fourth edition has taken into account a vast new literature, and boasts nearly a thousand new references as a result. By embracing new theory and practice and documenting many examples of both conservation successes and the hard lessons of real-world “wicked” environmental problems, Fundamentals of Conservation Biology remains a vital resource for biologists, conservationists, ecologists, environmentalists, and others.
