When the Citadel came to the abbey to ask for her assistance, she was astonished to learn she was not only not the only one of her kind, but she was one of the only sane ones. Her species enjoys being worshipped and that is rarely a good result for their people. Lieta has to stop them, nullify them and make sure that they wont hurt others. Running into one of her previous arrests and finding out that she is expected to let him be her shadow is a shock. Muraz once fancied himself a god, but after being shown that he was not alone, he has decided that working with the only being more powerful than himself might be educational.
Download or read book Breaking Gods written by D. J. Molles and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Leave it to DJ Molles to change the genre with a breakneck action novel that had me turning the pages while thinking, why the hell didn't I write this!"--Nicholas Sansbury Smith, NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author of the Hell Divers and Extinction Cycle series. In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven't gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It's not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. They reload them into new cartridges, and then sell them in towns. It's a good gig, it puts a few gold coins in Perry's pocket, and best of all, no one asks too many questions about his past. Which is ideal, because if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he'd be executed for heresy. Then some bad blood between crewmembers leads to one man with his brains dashed in, and Perry heading for the hangman's noose. Through a flurry of gunfire and blood, Perry manages a narrow escape, but only with the help of the two people he likes least: A girl named Teran that asks far too many questions about his past; and an ex-legionnaire named Stuber, whose penchant for gleeful violence brings back bad memories for Perry. On the run and pursued by a ruthless demigod, Perry is forced to confront the demons of a past that he thought he'd left behind him--and learn truths about himself and his family that have been buried for decades. But the more Perry learns, the more dangerous his journey becomes. Because the truth about Perry could break the gods. "Breaking Gods is one of those books I couldn't put down. Molles filled the pages with gritty, intense action that drove the story to a satisfying conclusion and left me eager for more." - Jason Anspach, bestselling author of Galaxy's Edge.
Download or read book Breaking God s Flail written by Kim Hunter Gordon and published by Kim Hunter Gordon. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Southern Song dynasty, Hechuan was the wealthiest county in the Sichuan basin, sat at a strategic point at the confluence of three major river routes. The two spectacular relics left here from the period demonstrate how two outside influences, one cultural and one military, left their mark not just in Sichuan but changed the face of the whole Chinese empire. The lucid sculpture at Laitan’s Erfo temple is the only three-dimensional representation of the Chan school’s defining transmission narrative. The emphasis on monastic lineage, real personages and achievable enlightenment for the laity is clearly expressed in the sculpture here and was designed to conform to, and court, the Chinese Confucian elite. This book gives a statue-by-statue guide to the iconography at this unique cliff site plus an introduction to the Chan school and its relationship with local elites. The Song stronghold at Diaoyu fortress is lauded in patriotic historiography as the ‘Mecca of the East’, credited to have broken the dreaded ‘flail of God’ (that is, the Mongol war machine) as it poised to ravish Europe and the Islamic world. But with Europe and Islam at war with one another and the Mongols set to establish a glorious but short-lived new dynasty in China, the narrative is reassessed in this the first English language work on the subject.

Book excerpt: "Drawing on both textual and archaeological sources, this book discusses how Christians in Late Antiquity negotiated the sculptural environment of cities and sanctuaries in a variety of ways, ranging from creative transformations to iconoclastic performances. Their responses to pagan sculpture present a rich window into the mechanisms through which society and culture changed under the influence of Christianity. The book thus demonstrates how Christian responses to pagan sculpture rhetorically continued an old tradition of discussing visual practices and the materiality of divine representations. Focusing in particular on the Egypt and the Near East, it furthermore argues that Christian responses encompass much more than mindless violence and need to be contextualised against other social and political developments, as well as local traditions of representation."--

Download or read book Broken Gods written by Dr. Greg K. Popcak, Ph.D. and published by Image. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You are gods." Blasphemy? No, those mysterious words, spoken by Jesus in the Gospel of John and alluded to in Psalm 82, point to a holy longing deep in our hearts that tells each of us that we were created for more. “Imagine that you were to wake up tomorrow to discover that, by some miracle, you had become a god overnight,” writes Dr. Gregory Popcak. “Not THE God—omnipresent, all-knowing, all-powerful—but a god in the classic sense. That is to say, you woke to find that you were perfect, immortal, utterly confident in who you are, where you were going in life, and how you were going to get there. It might seem ridiculous to consider at first, but allow yourself to imagine this truly miraculous transformation. What would it be like to live without fear? How would it feel to be completely at peace with yourself and the people in your life? Imagine what it would be like to be able to resolve—once and for all—the tension that currently exists between all your competing feelings, impulses, desires, and demands. What would change in your life as a result of your having become that sort of divinely actualized person?” Bold questions are in need of bold answers. And in Broken Gods, a work that is both practical and inspirational, Dr. Greg explores what our deepest desires--and even our darkest desires-- tell us about our ultimate destiny and reveals a commonsense approach to fulfilling our true purpose in life.
Download or read book The Gods Are Broken written by Jeffrey K. Salkin and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Abraham smashing his father’s idols might be the most important Jewish story ever told and the key to how Jews define themselves. In a work at once deeply erudite and wonderfully accessible, Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin conducts readers through the life and legacy of this powerful story and explains how it has shaped Jewish consciousness. Offering a radical view of Jewish existence, The Gods Are Broken! views the story of the young Abraham as the “primal trauma” of Jewish history, one critical to the development of a certain Jewish comfort with rebelliousness and one that, happening in every generation, has helped Jews develop a unique identity. Salkin shows how the story continues to reverberate through the ages, even in its connection to the phenomenon of anti-Semitism. Salkin’s work—combining biblical texts, archaeology, rabbinic insights, Hasidic texts (some never before translated), philosophy, history, poetry, contemporary Jewish thought, sociology, and popular culture—is nothing less than a journey through two thousand years of Jewish life and intellectual endeavor.

Download or read book Revolt Against Maturity written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolt Against Maturity is a study of Biblical psychology. Biblical psychology contrasts sharply with a science of the mind based on the religious presuppositions of humanism, which regards man as having no constant nature. A science of the mind based on humanism views the mind as a clean slate, and man's nature as plastic to be molded by men and institutions in the image of man for the new order he will establish. The Biblical view sees Psychology as a branch of theology; theology is a study of all that the Scriptures declare about God. Theology is essential not only to the study of psychology, but to ethics, anthropology, soteriology, eschatology, etc. Biblical Psychology assumes that man is created in the image of God directly, and not indirectly through theistic- or any other kind of evolution. Being created directly by God, man is not in the process of defining or determining his ontological qualities. Man has already been determined and defined by God. Thus it is God who has established the limits and nature of the mind. The mind of regenerate man experiences radically different motives and presuppositions from those of unregenerate man. The author sees the central task of Christian Psychology as that of discerning the mind and soul differences that exist between the regenerate and unregenerate. Pastoral counseling should first seek to establish whether or not a person is truly regenerate, and then aid the regenerate to further growth in sanctification. Work was to have provided the joy of fulfillment in God's goal of maturity for man, but because of the curse man is often subject to the frustration of meaningless and degrading work. True work is the exercise of dominion over the creation under God. When man's work is separated from dominion of the created world, he is often subject to moral and religious paralysis and becomes a sick soul. Man suffers similarly when he abstracts God from reality. Since God created everything, nothing can be interpreted apart from God. When man attempts this impossibility, he suffers psychologically. True knowledge of anything is revelational of God. Thus, an aspect of man's revolt against maturity and against life is his revolt against knowledge. Psychological damaging is inevitable for those in revolt against the maturity which the God of all life and all knowledge has purposed for man. The certain and true guilt which the human personality suffers because of sin can be alleviated only when God effects regeneration through the atoning blood of Christ. Thus having laid aside the old self with its evil practices, the new self is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him in righteousness and holiness of the truth. (Col. 3:10; Eph. 4:24) In the general or wider sense, the image of God in man means that man like God is a personality. The author notes that "in the redeemed man, this means that man becomes progressively more and more a person, self-conscious in his growth and character (as opposed to being unconscious of his nature), and steadily manifesting more and more the image of God in knowledge, righteousness, holiness, and dominion." Sanctification is unto holiness by which man realizes his chief end: to glorify God and enjoy Him forever: But because of his revolt against maturity man continues to suffer psychological damage both personally and collectively through the chaotic condition of his mind and his culture.
Download or read book Creatures of Habit written by Steve Poe and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beloved pastor Steve Poe helps Christians identify and break free from the destructive patterns that are keeping them from the joy-filled, flourishing life Jesus promised. We all have both good and bad habits in our life. Creatures of Habit reveals how to remove bad habits and replace them with godly ones. But it's not a matter of working hard, of "pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps." That approach simply doesn't work. True transformation is God's work--our job is to listen, obey, and put into practice what he's already directing us to do. Steve Poe has pastored large, growing churches for more than thirty-four years, and during that time he has counseled hundreds of people. He's seen that poor choices often become bad habits that in turn cause people a lot of problems. Hundreds of things can become a bad habit in our lives, but Poe focuses on the most common, among them: anger, lust, worry, cynicism, pride, self-centeredness, and greed. Each chapter provides insights, biblical examples, and tangible tools that will help you break the bad habits that can become spiritual strongholds in your life.
