Years after an apocalyptic attack radiated planet Epiphany, pick-pocket Jakarta “Jak” Moon wants nothing more than to protect her younger brother—and survive. But when an old ally steals her last prized possession, Jak is out of options. Desperate, she breaks into the Tower, the home of Epiphany’s winged dictator, the Godmother, and ends up on a dangerous mission—to climb the enormous elevator and retrieve the last working transport to the giant space stations in orbit. If successful, the Godmother promises Jak one life-changing wish, a wish Jak is determined to win or die trying. Forced to team up with Gill Cuvier, the hunky crush she’s not sure she can trust, Jak ascends the elevator three times, each with a mission more dangerous than the last. Can Jak and Gill retrieve the treasures the Godmother demands, discover the secret of the Golden Eggs, and protect their planet from an evil, time-travelling scientist? Can they learn to trust the love they’ve found to escape the giant space station and certain death? Or is that all too much for a pick-pocket to ask? Galactic Dreams is a unique series of science-fiction novellas from Blue Zephyr Press featuring retellings of classic tales from different authors, all sharing the same universe, technology, and history. If you liked Marissa Meyers’ Lunar Chronicles or James S.A. Corey’s The Expanse, you’ll love Galactic Dreams.

Book They Divided the Sky

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christa Wolf
  • Publisher : University of Ottawa Press

Download or read book They Divided the Sky written by Christa Wolf and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2013-01-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1963, in East Germany, They Divided the Sky tells the story of a young couple, living in the new, socialist, East Germany, whose relationship is tested to the extreme not only because of the political positions they gradually develop but, very concretely, by the Berlin Wall, which went up on August 13, 1961. The story is set in 1960 and 1961, a moment of high political cold war tension between the East Bloc and the West, a time when many thousands of people were leaving the young German Democratic Republic (the GDR) every day in order to seek better lives in West Germany, or escape the political ideology of the new country that promoted the "farmer and peasant" state over a state run by intellectuals or capitalists. The construction of the Wall put an end to this hemorrhaging of human capital, but separated families, friends, and lovers, for thirty years. The conflicts of the time permeate the relations between characters in the book at every level, and strongly affect the relationships that Rita, the protagonist, has not only with colleagues at work and at the teacher's college she attends, but also with her partner Manfred (an intellectual and academic) and his family. They also lead to an accident/attempted suicide that send her to hospital in a coma, and that provide the backdrop for the flashbacks that make up the narrative. Wolf's first full-length novel, published when she was thirty-five years old, was both a great literary success and a political scandal. Accused of having a 'decadent' attitude with regard to the new socialist Germany and deliberately misrepresenting the workers who are the foundation of this new state, Wolf survived a wave of political and other attacks after its publication. She went on to create a screenplay from the novel and participate in making the film version. More importantly, she went on to become the best-known East German writer of her generation, a writer who established an international reputation and never stopped working toward improving the socialist reality of the GDR.

Book An Uninterrupted View of the Sky

Download or read book An Uninterrupted View of the Sky written by Melanie Crowder and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern history unearthed as a boy becomes an innocent victim of corruption in Bolivia's crime world, where the power of family is both a prison and a means of survival. It's 1999 in Bolivia and Francisco's life consists of school, soccer, and trying to find space for himself in his family's cramped yet boisterous home. But when his father is arrested on false charges and sent to prison by a corrupt system that targets the uneducated, the poor, and the indigenous majority, Francisco and his sister are left with no choice: They must move into prison with their father. There, they find a world unlike anything they've ever known, where everything—a door, a mattress, protection from other inmates—has its price. Prison life is dirty, dire, and dehumanizing. With their lives upended, Francisco faces an impossible decision: Break up the family and take his sister to their grandparents in the Andean highlands, fleeing the city and the future within his grasp, or remain together in the increasingly dangerous prison. Pulled between two undesirable options, Francisco must confront everything he once believed about the world and his place within it. In this heart-wrenching novel, Melanie Crowder sheds light on a little-known era of modern South American history—where injustice still looms large—and proves that hope can be found, even in the most desperate places. Perfect for fans of Ruta Sepetys, Matt de la Pena, and Jacqueline Woodson. Book Break the Sky A steamy intense biker smart heroine romance

Download or read book Break the Sky A steamy intense biker smart heroine romance written by Nina Lane and published by Snow Queen Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I chase tornadoes—literally. And being a female scientist in my field means I need to be on my game at all times. Unshakable. Serious. Yes, even a little bitchy. The last thing I expect is a hot, intense biker like Archer West blazing into town and wanting a wild and reckless fling with me. Thanks to my not-so-squeaky past, I can’t afford any missteps at this point in my career. Translation: I have to keep the hell away from charming, dirty-talking, bad boy rebels like him. Not just because he’s an irresistible temptation, but also because he’s the estranged brother of a colleague. Unfortunately, it becomes abundantly clear the stubborn man has no intention of giving up, even if that means following me right into the eye of a storm. And while he may just be the only human on earth who seems to get me, he’s also the only one capable of making me lose control. I’m not actually sure which terrifies me more…or what'll break me first. Note: This is a standalone novel starring Archer, the brother of Dean West from the Spiral Trilogy. Reading Dean’s trilogy first isn’t at all required to enjoy Archer and Kelsey’s story. But, doing so will mean you get to meet TWO hunky, swoony West brothers (so, yay! lol). Happy reading! "Two words. Dirty. Talk. Archer is that sex-on-a-stick, panty-melting kind of man, and when he's in bed? I have no words. -- Book Lovers for Life "Romance at its most beautiful, angst and tension at its peak. The writing in this story is simply magnificent. Special. Classy. Sexy. Perfect. -- Angie and Jessica's Dreamy Reads
