Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have been marred by pervasive Eucharistic abuse, from violations of liturgical norms and rubrics to practices that encourage irreverence and facilitate habitual sacrilege. The coronavirus crisis in 2020 has occasioned a further wave of sacramental manipulation, desacralization, and deprivation that has left almost no Catholic in the world unharmed. These disturbing signs of the times call for an unsparing reassessment of official and unofficial policies, practices, customs, and attitudes, along with fresh appreciation for creative minorities that are taking a different, more difficult, and more successful path to reverence. The Holy Bread of Eternal Life is a powerful and timely book by scholar Peter Kwasniewski that exalts the divine gift of the Blessed Sacrament, which can never be too much adored, too much loved, too much cared for, or too muc

Book excerpt: Continuously popular since it first appeared in 1977, The Incorruptibles remains the acknowledged classic on the bodies of Saints that did not undergo decomposition after death, many remaining fresh and flexible for years, or even centuries. After explaining both natural and artificial mummification, the author shows that the incorruption of the Saints bodies fits into neither category but constitutes a much greater phenomenon which is unexplained by modern science even to this day. The author presents 102 canonized Saints, Beati and Venerables, summarizing their lives, the discovery of their incorruption and investigations by Church and medical authorities. The incorruptible bodies of saints are a consoling sign of Christ's victory over death, a confirmation of the dogma of the Resurrection of the Body, a sign that the Saints are still with us in the Mystical Body of Christ, as well as a proof of the truth of the Catholic Faith for only in the Catholic Church do we find this phenomenon.

Book The Priest Is Not His Own

Download or read book The Priest Is Not His Own written by Fulton J. Sheen and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on the priesthood may be grouped into three categories: theological, pastoral and sociological. The theological treatises emphasize the priest as the minister and ambassador of Christ; the pastoral writings are concerned with the priest in the pulpit, the priest in the confessional, the priest at prayer, etc. The sociological writings, which are the latest type, refrain almost entirely from the spiritual and are concerned with the statistical study of the reaction of the faithful, the unbelievers and the general public to the priest. Is there room for another category? Such a possibility presented itself in writing our Life of Christ. In that book, we tried to show that, unlike anyone else, Our Lord came on earth not to live but to die. Death for our Redemption was the goal of His sojourn here, the gold that He was seeking. Every parable, every incident in His life—even the call of the Apostles, the temptation, the Transfiguration, the long conversation with the woman at the well—was focused upon that salutary death. He was, therefore, not primarily a teacher, but a Savior. The dark days in which that Life of Christ was written were hours when ink and gall did mix to reveal the mystery of the Crucifix. More and more that vision of Christ as Savior began to illumine the priesthood, and out of it came the thoughts in this book. To save anyone from reading it through, we here state briefly the thesis. We who have received the Sacrament of Orders call ourselves “priests”. The author does not recall any priest ever having said, “I was ordained a ‘victim’ ”, nor did he ever say, “I am studying to be a victim.” That seemed almost alien to being a priest. The seminary always told us to be “good” priests; never were we told to be willing victims. And yet was not Christ, the Priest, a Victim? Did He not come to die? He did not offer a lamb, a bullock or doves; He never offered anything except Himself. He gave Himself up on our behalf, a sacrifice breathing out fragrance as He offered it to God. (Ephesians 5:2) Pagan priests, Old Testament priests, medicine men, all offered a sacrifice apart from themselves. But not Our Lord. He was Sacerdos-Victima. This being so, just as we miss much in the life of Christ by not showing that the shadow of the Cross cast itself even over the crib and the carpenter shop as well as over His public life, so we have a mutilated concept of our priesthood if we envisage it apart from making ourselves victims in the prolongation of His Incarnation. There is nothing else in this book but that idea. And if the reader would like to hear that chord struck a hundred times, he may now proceed.

Book excerpt: THE priest who wishes to say Mass should previously have recited at least Matins and Lauds, and this under pain of venial sin, according to the common opinion of theologians, against some who assert that it would be a mortal sin. This rule is founded on an ancient custom of the Church; for when Innocent IV. heard of the controversy raised on this point between the Archbishop of Nicosia and his Latin suffragans on the one side, and the Greek bishops of Cyprus on the other, he rendered this decision: “Sacerdos autem dicat Horas canonicas more suo; sed Missam celebrare, prius quam Officium matutinale compleverit, non presumat.”

Book In Memory of Me

  • Author : Milton Walsh
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2011-01-01
  • ISBN : 1586176080
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book In Memory of Me written by Milton Walsh and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman Canon, also known as the First Eucharistic Prayer, holds a privileged place among the texts used in the Mass. With the release of a new English translation of the Latin Roman Missal, Father Milton Walsh's timely meditation on the Roman Canon can help priests, religious, and laity deepen their understanding of the text that for centuries was the only Eucharistic prayer used in the Roman Rite. Drawing on the biblical and liturgical scholarship of the twentieth century, Father Walsh provides spiritual reflections on each of the prayers that make up the Roman Canon. This ancient prayer took shape during the golden age of the Fathers of the Church, from the fourth to the sixth centuries, and is rich in biblical allusions and theological meaning. In Memory of Me explores the themes of thanksgiving, offering, and intercession that recur throughout the prayer. It explains the centrality of sacrifice in the Eucharist: not only Christ's sacrifice on the Cross and the sacrifice of the Mass, but also the offerings of the Old Testament and the self-offering of the martyrs. The trinitarian nature of the Canon, in particular the question of the role of the Holy Spirit, is also treated, as well as the relationship between earthly and heavenly worship.
