Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment in Brazil: Post-Crisis Economic Development in Emerging Markets explores both the inward and outward ways foreign direct investment (FDI) can help Brazil sustain economic growth and development in the sometimes hostile post-global crisis era. Inward and outward FDI have major roles to play in reviving Brazil’s growth momentum and the country’s transition to a new growth paradigm less dependent on commodity exports. The book provides a comprehensive discussion on the analytical framework of FDI and the policy environment influencing the patterns and development of FDI in Brazil. It compares Brazil to other developing countries, but its focus rests on how, and to what extent, the global crisis is shaping the Brazilian institutional environment and its implications for FDI. Covers an important contemporary development issue focusing on the experience of one of the fastest growing and largest emerging economies in the world Presents econometric findings using data at different levels of aggregation Provides an in-depth study on the determinants of FDI and their relations to institutions Explores both the inward and outward ways foreign direct investment (FDI) can help Brazil sustain economic growth and development in the sometimes hostile post-global crisis era

Book Investment in Brazil From Crisis to Recovery

Download or read book Investment in Brazil From Crisis to Recovery written by Mr.Ivo Krznar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Brazil’s deep recession has been broad based, it has been marked by a particularly large fall in investment. Real investment fell by around 30 percent between the beginning of 2014 and the beginning of 2017. This paper finds that a variety of factors contributed to the investment decline, including a deterioration in Brazil’s medium-term growth prospects, rising real interest rates, falling terms of trade, rising uncertainty related to economic policy, rising levels of corporate leverage and lower cash flow. Some of the factors that have weighed on investment over recent years have begun to normalize providing some impetus for a recovery. However, still-high levels of corporate leverage and the prospect of continued uncertainty related to economic policy settings suggest a turnaround in investment is likely to be subdued.

Book Regional integration and productivity the experiences of Brazil and Mexico Working Paper ITD Documento de Trabajo ITD n 14

Download or read book Regional integration and productivity the experiences of Brazil and Mexico Working Paper ITD Documento de Trabajo ITD n 14 written by Mauricio Mesquita Moreira and published by BID-INTAL. This book was released on 2015 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the impact of integration on productivity? What are the main channels? Is there anything specific about productivity effects in regional agreements? This paper tries to answer these questions by looking at the experience of Brazil and Mexico. We estimate firm-level productivity and test its causal links with trade and FDI variables. The results suggest strong trade related gains, with import discipline emerging as the dominant effect. The results on learning-by-exporting were mixed, with gains restricted to Brazil's regional and worldwide exports. On FDI, foreign firms appear to have had a positive impact on their buyers and suppliers in Mexico, but in Brazil, the overall impact was statistically insignificant on productivity levels and negative on productivity growth.

Book Brazil Foreign Policy of a Future World Power

Download or read book Brazil Foreign Policy of a Future World Power written by Ronald M. Schneider and published by Boulder, Colo. : Westview Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myths and misconceptions about Brazil, the world's fifth largest and most populous country, are long-standing. Far from a sleeping giant, Brazil is the southern hemisphere's most important country. Entering its second decade of civilian constitutional government after a protracted period of military rule, it has also recently achieved sustained economic growth. Nevertheless, the nation's population of 157 million is divided by huge inequities in income and education, which are largely correlated with race, and crime rates have spiraled as a result of conflicts over land and resources.Ronald Schneider, a close observer of Brazilian society and politics for many decades, provides a comprehensive multidimensional portrait of this, Latin America's most complex country. He begins with an insightful description of its diverse regions and, then analyzes the historical processes of Brazil's development from the European encounter in 1500 to independence in 1822, the middle-class revolution in 1930, the military takeover in 1964, and the return to democracy after 1984. Schneider goes on to offer a detailed treatment of contemporary government and politics, including the 1994 elections. His closing chapters explore Brazil's rich cultural heritage and assess Brazil's place in the international arena.
