Book From Social Movement to Moral Market

Download or read book From Social Movement to Moral Market written by Paul-Brian McInerney and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Social Movement to Moral Market, Paul-Brian McInerney explores what happens when a movement of activists gives way to a market for entrepreneurs. This book explains the transition by tracing the brief and colorful history of the Circuit Riders, a group of activists who sought to lead nonprofits across the digital divide. In a single decade, this movement spawned a market for technology assistance providers, dedicated to serving nonprofit organizations. In contrast to the Circuit Riders' grassroots approach, which was rooted in their commitment to a cause, these consultancies sprung up as social enterprises, blending the values of the nonprofit sector with the economic principles of for-profit businesses. Through a historical-institutional analysis, this narrative shows how the values of a movement remain intact even as entrepreneurs displace activists. While the Circuit Riders serve as a rich core example in the book, McInerney's findings speak to similar processes in other "moral markets," such as organic food, exploring how the evolution from movement to market impacts activists and enterprises alike.

Book excerpt: Ten years ago this month, I wrote THE END for the first time in TREADING WATER. At that time, I never could’ve imagined the amazing journey I was about to embark upon and how it would change my life, my family’s life and the lives of many of my friends and family who now work with me. But on that afternoon of May 18, 2005, all I could focus on was the singular feeling that comes with actually finishing a book for the first time. There are no words to describe the thrill, the sense of accomplishment and the fear of what comes next. I remember those feelings as if they were yesterday rather than ten long years ago. Forty-one books later, I still get a thrill out of writing THE END, but nothing will ever compare to finishing TREADING WATER. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of that amazing day, I’m thrilled to bring you the Treading Water Series Box Set, available for the first time on May 18, 2015. Thank you to all the readers who’ve made the dream that began on that long ago day come true in every possible way. I hope you enjoy this box set! xoxo Marie

Book Subversive Southerner

Download or read book Subversive Southerner written by Catherine Fosl and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a Foreword by Angela Y. Davis Winner of the 2003 Oral History Association Book AwardWinner of the 2003 Gustavus Myers Center for Human Rights Outstanding Book Award Anne McCarty Braden (1924-2006) was a courageous southern white woman who in the late 1940s rejected her segregationist and privileged past to become a lifelong crusader against racial discrimination. Arousing the conscience of white southerners to the reality of racial injustice, Braden was branded a communist and seditionist by southern politicians who used McCarthyism to buttress legal and institutional segregation as it came under fire in deferral courts. She became, nevertheless, one of the civil rights movement's staunchest white allies and one of five southern whites commended by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in his 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail." Although Braden remained a controversial figure even in the movement, her commitment superseded her radical reputation, and she became a mentor and advisor to students who launched the 1960s sit-ins and to successive generations of peace and justice activists. In this riveting, oral history-based biography, Catherine Fosl also offers a social history of how racism, sexism, and anticommunism overlapped in the twentieth-century south and how ripples from the Cold War divided and limited the southern civil rights movement.

Book The Works of the Gawain Poet

Download or read book The Works of the Gawain Poet written by Ad Putter and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 953 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new volume of the works of the Gawain poet, destined to become the definitive edition for students and scholars. This volume brings together four works of the unknown fourteenth-century poet famous for the Arthurian romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, in their original Middle English. In one of the great tales of medieval literature, Gawain, the noblest knight of King Arthur's court, must keep a deadly bargain with a monstrous knight and resist the advances of his host's beautiful wife. The dream vision of Pearl depicts a bereaved father whose lost child leads him to glimpse heaven. And in moral poems based on stories from the Bible, Cleanness warns against sins of the flesh and of desecration, while Patience encourages readers to endure suffering as God's will. Little is known about the so-called 'Gawain poet', who wrote during the late fourteenth century. It is believed that he came from south-east Cheshire, an important cultural and economic centre at the time, and he was clearly well-read in Latin, French and English. Although he is not named as the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Patience, Cleanness, the four works have been attributed to him based on a careful comparison of their language, date and themes. Myra Stokes was formerly Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Bristol University. Her books include Justice and Mercy in Piers Plowman and The Language of Jane Austen. Ad Putter teaches at the English Department and the Centre for Medieval Studies of the University of Bristol, where is Professor of Medieval English Literature. His monographs include Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and French Arthurian Romance and An Introduction to the Gawain Poet, and he is also co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to the Arthurian Legend.
