Book The Singularity Is Nearer

Download or read book The Singularity Is Nearer written by Ray Kurzweil and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The noted inventor and futurist’s successor to his landmark book The Singularity Is Near explores how technology will transform the human race in the decades to come Since it was first published in 2005, Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near and its vision of an exponential future have spawned a worldwide movement. Kurzweil's predictions about technological advancements have largely come true, with concepts like AI, intelligent machines, and biotechnology now widely familiar to the public. In this entirely new book Ray Kurzweil brings a fresh perspective to advances toward the Singularity—assessing his 1999 prediction that AI will reach human level intelligence by 2029 and examining the exponential growth of technology—that, in the near future, will expand human intelligence a millionfold and change human life forever. Among the topics he discusses are rebuilding the world, atom by atom with devices like nanobots; radical life extension beyond the current age limit of 120; reinventing intelligence by connecting our brains to the cloud; how exponential technologies are propelling innovation forward in all industries and improving all aspects of our well-being such as declining poverty and violence; and the growth of renewable energy and 3-D printing. He also considers the potential perils of biotechnology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence, including such topics of current controversy as how AI will impact employment and the safety of autonomous cars, and "After Life" technology, which aims to virtually revive deceased individuals through a combination of their data and DNA. The culmination of six decades of research on artificial intelligence, The Singularity Is Nearer is Ray Kurzweil’s crowning contribution to the story of this science and the revolution that is to come.

Book Psychology Education and Training

Download or read book Psychology Education and Training written by Rainer Silbereisen and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the psychological research in the last century has been conducted in the global North West; hence, many prevailing theories and methodologies reflect the philosophical framework and shared cultural knowledge of this region. Other world views and cultural contexts have, as yet, not had the same opportunity to develop scientific insights that come to the attention of global audiences. Psychology Education and Training is the first truly international effort to generate a framework for common standards in psychological education and training across the globe. Psychologists have long studied human beings in their socio-cultural context. New challenges such as globalisation and the relationship of the brain and behavior require that education and training keep pace with these rapidly evolving developments. The chapters in this book were generated by an international conference which resulted in the Dornburg Accord. While anchored in higher education, the focus is on the generative and translational psychological science needed to fulfill psychology’s responsibility to society. Psychology Education and Training is the first book of its kind to cover both historic strengths and the requirements of emerging fields. The book deals with balancing the universalities and cultural specificities of psychological processes, the adjustments to academic curricula required to support national needs, as well as the credentials and regulations required to assure the quality of psychological services. Psychology Education and Training is unique in providing initial data and concurrent assessment of various components of education and training in psychology across the globe. The book is a must for faculty members, advanced students of psychology and policy-makers who are interested in the issues that shape their societies.

Book The Bioethics of Space Exploration

Download or read book The Bioethics of Space Exploration written by Konrad Szocik and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human exploration of space contains many ethical challenges. Future long-term space missions will generate specific problems and place new demands on humanity. One of them is the concept of human enhancement, primarily through gene editing, for the implementation of long-term space missions. In this book, I hypothesize that large-scale application of human enhancement may be necessary to enable space exploration and exploitation. The book discusses the many arguments for and against human genetic modification for space missions. It also considers the most controversial type of modification, germline gene editing. In the book I present many arguments in favor of applying even radical and considered controversial forms of human enhancements today. The book shows that the environment of future space missions is a unique and different ethical environment from Earth's and requires a modified bioethical approach. The bioethics of space missions should be syncretic, issue-driven, and highly dependent on the purpose of space missions. In the book, I point out the importance of discussing future scenarios of human development. Space bioethics is presented as part of futures studies. The book considers futures of humanity in space that are possible, probable, preferable, but also dystopian. The aim of these considerations is to prevent the development of these worst-case scenarios. The book suggests that we should look to the development of biomedicine with greater optimism and hope. Human enhancement via gene editing for space missions is presented as a pragmatic tool rooted in the principle of well-being"--
