Book Braids and Coverings

Download or read book Braids and Coverings written by Vagn Lundsgaard Hansen and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a graduate course taught by the author at the University of Maryland. The lecture notes have been revised and augmented by examples. The first two chapters develop the elementary theory of Artin Braid groups, both geometrically and via homotopy theory, and discuss the link between knot theory and the combinatorics of braid groups through Markou's Theorem. The final two chapters give a detailed investigation of polynomial covering maps, which may be viewed as a homomorphism of the fundamental group of the base space into the Artin Braid group on n strings.

Book The Mathematical Theory of Knots and Braids

Download or read book The Mathematical Theory of Knots and Braids written by S. Moran and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-04-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the theory of knots via the theory of braids, which attempts to be complete in a number of ways. Some knowledge of Topology is assumed. Necessary Group Theory and further necessary Topology are given in the book. The exposition is intended to enable an interested reader to learn the basics of the subject. Emphasis is placed on covering the theory in an algebraic way. The work includes quite a number of worked examples. The latter part of the book is devoted to previously unpublished material.

Book An Introduction to Contact Topology

Download or read book An Introduction to Contact Topology written by Hansjörg Geiges and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-13 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text on contact topology is a comprehensive introduction to the subject, including recent striking applications in geometric and differential topology: Eliashberg's proof of Cerf's theorem via the classification of tight contact structures on the 3-sphere, and the Kronheimer-Mrowka proof of property P for knots via symplectic fillings of contact 3-manifolds. Starting with the basic differential topology of contact manifolds, all aspects of 3-dimensional contact manifolds are treated in this book. One notable feature is a detailed exposition of Eliashberg's classification of overtwisted contact structures. Later chapters also deal with higher-dimensional contact topology. Here the focus is on contact surgery, but other constructions of contact manifolds are described, such as open books or fibre connected sums. This book serves both as a self-contained introduction to the subject for advanced graduate students and as a reference for researchers.

Book Bonnet Strings

Download or read book Bonnet Strings written by Saloma Miller Furlong and published by MennoMedia, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age twenty, Saloma Miller left behind her Amish community in Burton, Ohio, and boarded a night train for Vermont, where she knew no one. In this poignant coming-of-age memoir, Saloma’s new life of freedom includes work as a waitress and plans to continue her education. Romance also blossoms with a Yankee toymaker. Soon, however, a vanload of people from her community, including the Amish bishop, arrive to take her back into the fold. Saloma’s freedom comes to an abrupt end when she goes back home to Ohio with them. Thus begins a years-long struggle of feeling torn between two worlds: will she remain Amish and embrace the sense of belonging and community her Amish life offers, or will she return to the newfound freedom she tasted in Vermont? Saloma settles into teaching in an Amish school and does her best to fit back into Amish ways, but a legacy of childhood abuse, struggles with an eating disorder, and questions of identity plague her. Her ties to the outside world remain, mostly through the quiet perseverance of the toymaker from Vermont. He keeps sending her cards, never giving up hope that their love could survive the strain of living in two different worlds. Bonnet Strings by Saloma Miller Furlong offers a universal story of overcoming adversity and a rare look inside an Amish community. Readers of Amish fiction and viewers of the PBS documentaries such as The Amish and The Amish: Shunned will find in it a true story: of woundedness and healing, of doubt and faith, and of the often competing desires for freedom and belonging.
