Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Johannes Brahms, Vol. 1 of 2 The biographical materials from which I have written the following Life of Brahms have, excepting in the few instances indicated in footnotes, been gathered by me, at first hand, chiefly in the course of several Continental journeys, the first of which was undertaken in the summer of 1902. Dates of concerts throughout the volumes have been authenticated by reference to original programmes or con temporary journals. My aim in giving some account of Brahms' compositions has not been a technical one. So far as I have exceeded purely biographical limits my object has been to assist the general music-lover in his enjoyment of the noble achieve ments of a beautiful life. Book The Chamber Music of Johannes Brahms Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chamber Music of Johannes Brahms Classic Reprint written by Henry S. Drinker Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chamber Music of Johannes Brahms The sketch of Brahms' life and character includes only such events as might reasonably have influenced his music. The analysis of the principal characteristics of his music is given with the full appreciation of the impossibility of demonstration. Brahms' complete works have been tabulated in groups, so arranged as to enable those wishing to per form them, to see at a glance which are adapted to the performers available. Following the tabulation is an attempt to point out the technical features of Brahms' music which distinguish it from that of other composers. This has been the most interesting part of the work. It is a subject as to some features of which all will probably agree. As to others, however, one may expect and hope for a delightful and stimulating difference of Opinion among persons whose views are the most respected. For the benefit of those wishing to make a further study of Brahms' life and works, a summary is given of the principal bibliography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Johannes Brahms: A Biograhical Sketch 'its obvious disadvantages, more especially when its subject is still living, and in the possession of fullest vigour of work; but it has its own advantages to compensate for these. That it should take the form of personal reminiscences is greatly to be desired, since' the peculiar merit of a contemporary account is more likely to be brought out by this than by any other method. Dr. Deiters has adopted this style in the short account which he prefixes to his critical review of all the works of Brahms, and there is no doubt that when the time comes for writing the composer's life - long may it be before the materials for such a work are completed by the master's death his biographer will find one of his most valuable sources of information in the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schumanns and Johannes Brahms: The Memoirs of Eugenie Schumann Hen I began to write down these Memoirs in the year 1920, I was guided by a definite intention. I find that erroneous statements are current concerning [the lives and characters of my brothers. To disprove these by giving a faithful picture of their personalities as they are revealed first-hand in their letters, seemed to me a duty to them not only as beloved brothers, but as sons of our parents. I am not sure that I had publication in view _i felt constrained to say how things had really been, and I started to write. One word led to another, one remembrance called forth a thousand. I wrote for the pleasure of writing I surveyed my life and lingered where I listed. The longer I wrote, the more it was my mother's personality which became the prominent one. On her eightieth birthday I surprised my sister Marie with the first five chapters. She was pleased with them. A kind publisher who read them gave me encouragement, and induced me to supplement and revise. I took up the pen once more and found that I had many more things to say. The disconnected chapters became a book. If I have given little in it, it is the best that I have to give, the memories of great and goodtcharacters, of great and good; times. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Life of Johannes Brahms (Vol 1 of 2): Look inside the book: Frequently, when my landlady's servant came to attend me to my lodgings after an evening spent at Frau Schumann's house, and Brahms and I took our leave at the same moment, he would say, 'I am coming, too, ' and, our ways lying partly in the same direction, would walk the short distance by my side; but these occasions did not add much to my knowledge of him. ... The composer of a long series of works which included such masterpieces as the second serenade, the two string sextets, the first and second pianoforte quartets, the inspired German Requiem, and a host of others already before the world (but of which I then knew nothing), could, of course, do no otherwise than allow his compositions to rest quietly on their merits; and doubtless the intense pride which is equally inherent with intense modesty in the higher order of genius had its sharePg 7 in causing Brahms' reticence about all things concerning himself. ...He not only showed me how to practise: he made me, at first, practise to him during a good part of my lessons, whilst he sat watching my fingers; telling me what was wrong in my way of moving them, indicating, by a movement of his own hand, a better position for mine, absorbing himself entirely, for the time being, in the object of helping me.

Download or read book Brahms and His World written by Walter Frisch and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1990, Brahms and His World has become a key text for listeners, performers, and scholars interested in the life, work, and times of one of the nineteenth century's most celebrated composers. In this substantially revised and enlarged edition, the editors remain close to the vision behind the original book while updating its contents to reflect new perspectives on Brahms that have developed over the past two decades. To this end, the original essays by leading experts are retained and revised, and supplemented by contributions from a new generation of Brahms scholars. Together, they consider such topics as Brahms's relationship with Clara and Robert Schumann, his musical interactions with the "New German School" of Wagner and Liszt, his influence upon Arnold Schoenberg and other young composers, his approach to performing his own music, and his productive interactions with visual artists. The essays are complemented by a new selection of criticism and analyses of Brahms's works published by the composer's contemporaries, documenting the ways in which Brahms's music was understood by nineteenth- and early twentieth-century audiences in Europe and North America. A new selection of memoirs by Brahms's friends, students, and early admirers provides intimate glimpses into the composer's working methods and personality. And a catalog of the music, literature, and visual arts dedicated to Brahms documents the breadth of influence exerted by the composer upon his contemporaries.

Drawing upon correspondences between members of the Schumann family, Eugenie relates her memories of childhood and education, and her experiences learning music under the tutorship of Johannes Brahms. The ongoing fame of her mother Clara Schumann meant the family was consistently under the musical spotlight, the public eager for each new performance and composition. Eugenie's recollections of her siblings are poignant: more than once, we hear of the pressure her siblings were under to meet the achievements of their gifted parents. Despite these stresses, Eugenie places emphasis on her mother's caring and compassionate nature ? though the encroaching demands of fame were a fact of the Schumann family life, Clara Schumann is praised for her efforts at keeping the family united.
