Book The Brahma s Net Sutra

Download or read book The Brahma s Net Sutra written by and published by BDK America. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Brahmåa's Net Sutra, translated by A. Charles Muller and Kenneth K. Tanaka, is the primary extant vinaya text that articulates a set of precepts from a Mahayana perspective, mainly intended for 'bodhisattva practitioners,' primarily householders, rather than renunciant monks or nuns. Before the appearance of this text the monastic rules and regulations in East Asian Buddhism were defined fully by the 'Hinayana' vinaya, most importantly the Fourt-part Vinaya associated with the Dharmaguptaka school in India. With the appearance of the Brahmåa's Net Sutra many East Indian schools diversified their precept practices, with some groups of practitioners taking up either set of precepts, often utilizing both. Composed in China around 420, the Brahmåa's Net Sutra is based on various contemporary Mahayana and Hinayana vinaya writings and includes extensive discussion of indigenous Chinese moral concepts such as filial piety, etc. The text is based in the same mainstream Mahayana thought of the Flower Ornament Sutra (Huayan jing), the Nirvana Sutra (Niepan jing), and the Sutra for Humane Kings (Renwang jing). In fact, the extend of the Brahmåa's Net Sutra's agreement with the Flower Ornament Sutra is so pronounced that it is regarded as the 'concluding sutra' of the latter."--Back cove

Contained in its twelve chapters are definitive explanations of the meaning of innate and actualized enlightenment, sudden and gradual enlightenment, the true nature of ignorance and suffering, along with numerous examples of methods of contemplation that accord with and reflect the basic Ch'an views on enlightenment and practice. Book Zen Buddhism The Path to Enlightenment Special Edition Buddhist Verses Sutras Teachings

Download or read book Zen Buddhism The Path to Enlightenment Special Edition Buddhist Verses Sutras Teachings written by Shawn Conners and published by Special Edition Books. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siddhartha Gautama, the Indian philosopher also known as Buddha Gautama, is believed to have attained Enlightenment sometime in the middle of the 5th century before the Common Era, while meditating under a Bodhi tree. From that time of enlightenment until his death, by which he entered Nirvana, he traveled by foot around the countryside of India, teaching others his philosophy of the Middle Path. The foundations of Buddhist tradition and practice are often called the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma (teachings), and the Sangha (community). Presented in this modern special edition is a unique selection of the ancient texts which would follow the path of the Silk Road from India to China to Japan, and evolve into the school of thought known today as Zen Buddhism. This path follows the Indian Mahayana verses from the Dhammapada, to a collection of Buddhist sutras (or scriptures) transcribed from Chinese texts, and finally concludes with the Threefold Lotus, the three Pure Land sect sutras favored in Japan. Within the texts, the reader will find the Noble Eightfold Path, the 10 Major Precepts, the 48 Minor Precepts, the teachings of Ananda, the teachings of Bodhidharma, the Twin Verses of the Dhammapada, the Brahma Net Sutra and other basic tenets of Buddhism. The verses, sutras and texts stand on their own, as they have for centuries, to be interpreted by those who seek a deeper understanding of the world, and spiritual enlightenment.

Book The Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra

Download or read book The Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra written by Tony Page and published by F Lepine Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-23 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sutra is the study of what can be called "Nirvana Sutra Buddhism" or "Tathagatagarbha Buddhism". It is a very positive, balanced, faith-promoting and spiritually affirmative manifestation of Buddhism, which recognises the hidden reality of the unconditioned, egoless Buddha-Self in all beings. That Self of the Buddha is a mystery, beyond the reach and grasp of the samsaric intellect: while the Buddha-Self is real, it is certainly not comparable to our worldly, selfish self (ego) and cannot truly be captured within the net of words or concepts. Yet it is the only enduring Truth that can ever be found. This sutra leads us to the Ultimate Truth and indicate the Path to tread for an Awakening into Reality's presence, which is all-pervading and eternal. That eternally present Truth is the sole genuine Reality."You, monks, should not thus cultivate the notion of impermanence, suffering and non-Self, the notion of impurity and so forth, deeming them to be the true meaning of the Dharma, as those people searching in a pool for a radiant gem did, each thinking that bits of brick, stones, grass and gravel were the jewel. You should train yourselves well in efficacious means. In every situation, constantly meditate upon the idea of the Self, the idea of the Eternal, the Bliss, and the Pure ... Those who, desirous of attaining Reality, meditatatively cultivate these ideas, namely, the ideas of the Self, the Eternal, the Bliss, and the Pure, will skilfully bring forth the jewel, just like that wise person who obtained the genuine, priceless gem, rather than worthless detritus misperceived as the real thing."- The Buddha, Chapter Three, The Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra

Book excerpt: "The study of apocryphal texts is probably the single most important task facing Chinese Buddhist studies today. This volume has done much to get it off on the right foot." --Journal of Asian Studies 50 (1991) "Few books of scholarly essays are this ambitious. The editor ... intends to introduce not just new studies, but a new field of study.... However, rather than marking the birth of Buddhist apocrypha studies, the book ... successfully demonstrates its early maturity." --Monumenta Serica 40 (1992) "The essays are without exception meticulous in scholarship and path-finding in significance." --Journal of Chinese Religions 20 (1992)

Book Hua Yen Buddhism

  • Author : Francis H. Cook
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2010-11
  • ISBN : 0271038047
  • Pages : 165 pages

Download or read book Hua Yen Buddhism written by Francis H. Cook and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hua-yen is regarded as the highest form of Buddhism by most modern Japanese and Chinese scholars. This book is a description and analysis of the Chinese form of Buddhism called Hua-yen (or Hwa-yea), Flower Ornament, based largely on one of the more systematic treatises of its third patriarch. Hua-yen Buddhism strongly resembles Whitehead's process philosophy, and has strong implications for modern philosophy and religion. Hua-yen Buddhism explores the philosophical system of Hua-yen in greater detail than does Garma C.C. Chang's The Buddhist Teaching of Totality (Penn State, 1971). An additional value is the development of the questions of ethics and history. Thus, Professor Cook presents a valuable sequel to Professor Chang's pioneering work. The Flower Ornament School was developed in China in the late 7th and early 8th centuries as an innovative interpretation of Indian Buddhist doctrines in the light of indigenous Chinese presuppositions, chiefly Taoist. Hua-yen is a cosmic ecology, which views all existence as an organic unity, so it has an obvious appeal to the modern individual, both students and layman.

Book The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China

Download or read book The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China written by Yifa and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China contains the first complete translation of China's earliest and most influential monastic code. The twelfth-century text Chanyuan qinggui (Rules of Purity for the Chan Monastery) provides us with a wealth of detail on all aspects of life in public Buddhist monasteries during the Sung (960-1279). Part One consists of Yifa's overview of the development of monastic regulations in Chinese Buddhist history, a biography of the text's author, and an analysis of the social and cultural context of premodern Chinese Buddhist monasticism. Of particular importance are the interconnections made between Chan traditions and the dual heritages of Chinese culture and Indian Buddhist Vinaya. Although much of the text's source material is traced directly to the Vinayas and the works of the Vinaya advocate Daoan (312-385) and the Lu master Daoxuan (596-667), the Chanyuan qinggui includes elements foreign to the original Vinaya texts - elements incorporated from Chinese governmental policies and traditional Chinese etiquette. Following the translator's overview is a complete translation of the text, extensively annotated.
