Book Factual Nonsense

  • Author : Darren Coffield
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2013-05-01
  • ISBN : 1780885261
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Factual Nonsense written by Darren Coffield and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joshua's gallery 'Factual Nonsense' was quite unlike any other. Called a 'crazy powerhouse of ideas' it was a kind of cultural think-tank located in the then run-down East End area known as Shoreditch, which would later become a cohesive and creative hub (since rebranded as 'Silicon Roundabout'). Joshua was the driving force that turned the area's fortune and reputation around. Under the auspices of his Factual Nonsense banner, he held some of the most important and influential public art events of the late 20th Century. The first of these was an anarchic swipe at the notion of a traditional village fete called 'A Fete Worse than Death', with some of the biggest but the still yet unknown stars of the art world, including Damien Hirst and Angus Fairhurst, famously dressed as clowns and produced the first spin paintings at the Fete (for sale for the princely sum of £1). Whilst Hirst's spin machine has, from lowly beginnings at the Fete, gone on to appear recently at the World Economic Forum, a billionaire's playground, creating spin paintings for rich oligarch's wives as entertainment, Joshua was to die alone, poverty stricken back in 1996 on the cusp of international fame. Never reaping the rewards that were to come from the economic upturn and Charles Saatchi's Sensation exhibition, his death was a marker for the beginning of an era of international fame and success for his contemporaries and the end of the 'classic' avant-garde. The list of the seventy or so names of people I have interviewed for the book over the past year reads like a who's who of the contemporary art world, with contributions from the likes of Jay Jopling, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gary Hume, Gavin Turk, Maureen Paley and Sir Peter Blake. Although Joshua never achieved the recognition that he deserved in his lifetime, he was a pivotal figure in the London art scene during the early 1990's. Josh moved into Hoxton and opened a gallery there and started a veritable art movement, while the place was a neglected London backwater. His lasting legacy was to bring together a group of artists and gallerists and create what is now known as the YBA scene. The text is illustrated with previously unseen photographs, letters and extracts from Joshua's diaries, which give insight into his thought process as well as the deterioration of his mental state towards the end of his brief but eventful life.

Book excerpt: This a long-term project, by South African photographer Alice Mann, explores the unique sport of drum majorettes. The images depict the aspirational subculture surrounding all-female teams of drum majorettes affectionately known as 'Drummies' The sport of drum majorettes has a long history in South Africa, becoming popular in the early 80s, but participation in the sport has since dropped dramatically. In contemporary culture there is a strong sense of nostalgia linked to drum majorettes; it is viewed as the pursuit of a bygone era. However, in many marginalised communities across the country, it is still taken seriously and is considered a highly competitive sport. For the girls and young women involved, being a drummie is a privilege and an achievement, indicative of success on and off the field. The notoriously demanding practice schedules are representative of the girls' commitment, and their ability to work hard.

  • Author : Kathleen G Kasper
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019-07-29
  • ISBN : 9781545671641
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Digging Deeper written by Kathleen G Kasper and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The content of Genesis 1-11 is among the most profoundly informative chapters in the Bible, yet it is often overlooked. If we dig deeper into the text, we will discover that: - God did not hide His salvation plans. They are in "plain" sight! - We will learn the three acts of rebellion (not one) which frame much of the Biblical narrative. - We'll find out why God would command Israel to utterly destroy some people groups when they enter the Promised Land. - We will better know what humanity will face before God brings this present earth to an end and more. Solomon wrote, 'That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun' (Ecclesiastes 1:9 NKJV). His words are true. This book is a testament to the insights God has given to many people who have dug deeper into Genesis 1-11. They can only be described as stunning! Kathleen Kasper has served the Lord of the Church as pastor and teacher in Nebraska and Wisconsin. She presently resides and serves Him in Texas. In 2016, beginning with Genesis 1:1, she began "blogging through the Bible." Her desire was to 'dig deeper' into God's Word. She has learned what many others have taught. God's Word cannot be quickly read. The treasure God would have us discover is found as each word and phrase is thoughtfully pondered. 'Digging Deeper into Genesis 1-11' presents what the Lord has shown her thus far. There is still much more to be discovered in these chapters and in those which follow them. God is so very amazing! Book Hiroshige Kunisada Two Brushes Tokaido

Download or read book Hiroshige Kunisada Two Brushes Tokaido written by Cristina Berna and published by BOD GmbH DE. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cooperative work between Hiroshige and Kunisada (1854 -1855) is probably the most romantic of all the Tokaido editions. Both Hiroshige and Kunisada did their own individual versions with the same type of theme - a combination of landscape and often unrelated portraits based in legend and other motifs. But they did not rise to the level of elegance of the "Two Brush" Tokaido. The figures and the landscape are very well balanced and the colors are fresh and joyful. The "Two Brush" Tokaido is both a tour through the landscape of Japan and a cultural introduction. The reason for the combination of landscape and theater was to circumvent censorship of the popular kabuki theater prints.
