Download or read book Hyena written by Jude Angelini and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyena is a collection of autobiographical stories by Jude Angelini, which takes the reader on his journey of heartbreak, depravity, and hilarity, deftly moving between his adult life and his childhood growing up in a factory town outside of Detroit. Each story is told with brutal honesty, yet maintains a gallows humor that will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. Jude is one of the top hip-hop radio hosts on Sirius Satellite radio. His self-published, print-on-demand edition of Hyena has been an indie bestseller, despite having no ebook or physical distribution. Its exploration of drugs, sex, and the human condition compares to Charles Bukowski, Hunter S. Thompson, Artie Lange, and Jim Norton. It also captures the hardscrabble culture, language, and landscape of post-industrial Detroit, from which came some of pop culture's most compelling artists.

Download or read book My Three Shadows written by James Milton Roberts and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For James Milton Roberts, his life falls into three distinct phases: growing up on a tobacco farm in eastern North Carolina; witnessing the horrors in Vietnam with the Marine Corps; and battling the personal aftereffects of the war. In this memoir, My Three Shadows, Roberts recaps his past in order to make sense of his present and future. Roberts recalls growing up on a farm, where he picked tobacco and tended the animals. Although it was a time of hardship, he narrates stories of the carefree hours of fishing and swimming in nearby swamps. But his life changed drastically when he joined the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. My Three Shadows provides a firsthand look into some of the horrors he witnessed. These horrors would haunt him when he returned to the United States. This memoir tells of how post-traumatic stress disorder and repressed memories of war affected every aspect of his life, causing him to lose his family, businesses, and home. But Roberts also shares a story of survival and redemptionhow the love of one woman makes him who he is today.

Download or read book Bloody Tyrants and Little Pickles written by Marlis Schweitzer and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bloody Tyrants and Little Pickles traces the theatrical repertoire of a small group of white Anglo-American actresses as they reshaped the meanings of girlhood in Britain, North America, and the British West Indies during the first half of the nineteenth century. It is a study of the possibilities and the problems girl performers presented as they adopted the manners and clothing of boys, entered spaces intended for adults, and assumed characters written for men. It asks why masculine roles like Young Norval, Richard III, Little Pickle, and Shylock came to seem “normal” and “natural” for young white girls to play, and it considers how playwrights, managers, critics, and audiences sought to contain or fix the at-times dangerous plasticity they exhibited both on and off the stage. Schweitzer analyzes the formation of a distinct repertoire for girls in the first half of the nineteenth century, which delighted in precocity and playfulness and offered up a model of girlhood that was similarly joyful and fluid. This evolving repertoire reflected shifting perspectives on girls’ place within Anglo-American society, including where and how they should behave, and which girls had the right to appear at all.

Download or read book A Lot Like Fun Only Different written by Jack Livingston and published by Nfb Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Jack Livingston Describes the Book"Clearing out the high school with a smoke bomb prank in our senior year, raising a family of pigs in a village yard, saving a drowning man in Singapore, and overcoming the trauma of a childhood abduction are part of my friend, Chris Kelley's past. I knew little about them. To me, Chris was the guy who was always up for doing two fun things in one day (sometimes three). When Chris was diagnosed with Pick's disease (a rare type of dementia) in his mid-fifties, it signaled the end to what we had taken for granted. It changed our friendship. No longer would I follow him on epic adventures he planned. These days, I take him for hikes, hold both sides of our conversations, and help him across a two-foot stream. But because I didn't want to forget the times we'd had together, I started to write, and as a result found out there was more to my friend. In A Lot Like Fun -- Only Different I share incredible stories of our improbable friendship where Chris met life head on while I asked, "Are you sure we want to do this?" It contains dozens of stories and photos from our past that contrast 'current day' Chris, diminished by Pick's, with the Chris I knew so well. No longer are we barreling down the 219 to ski or mountain bike the Bent Rim Trail, and celebrating with a 'couple tree' beers. We aren't breaking trails with our snowshoes in the Adirondack High Peaks or cruising through Appalachia on the way to a 24-hour mountain bike race. We still get together every week. And I look forward to those times. It's fun -- only different. Chris greets me with a smile and a hearty laugh. He doesn't speak, but I know if he could, he'd tell me, 'Thanks for coming out, Jack. Today was great.' And then it breaks my heart when he stands next to my car, wanting to ride home with me and I have to tell him, 'Chris, you're riding with your brother. I'll see you next week, okay buddy.' And I hear his words of the past. 'Good deal.'"
