According to Major Boyd of Taghmon the sons of Arthur Boyd of Kilkenny, Lucius and Gladwell were a wild pair and one night after partying they returned home with some equally wild friends and got the butler, Johnny, out of bed to open the cellar and assist with further festivities. The wine was uncorked and glasses produced and Johnny was invited to indulge, which he was forced to do, albeit willingly. Late in the night it was thought fit to have some kind of game and it was decided that shooting at a target with pistols might be attempted. However to add spice to the fun it was decided that Johnny should lie down and put his bare foot up as a cockshot. Inebriated as he was he didn't mind in the least, and the young men took turns at trying to shoot the wavering foot. One succeeded and shot off one of Johnny's toes! Hence the name Johnny Nine Toes. No doubt he was well compensated. In fact Johnny became something of a celebrity and was introduced to all the ladies and gentlemen as Johnny Nine Toes. Later in life when he had left the Boyd service he worked for Miss Deane in Longraigue, Foulksmills, and took a delight in telling everyone about his 'mishap'.

Book excerpt: This is a collection of travel letters written by the textile merchant John (Jack) McCaldin Loewenthal, known as JMcC, to his mother Jane at their home in Lennoxvale, Belfast, between 1889 and 1895. They were written during his journeys to South America and the West Indies, where he was securing commercial contracts, whilst representing the firm “Moore and Weinberg”, Linen and Jute traders, based in Dundee and Belfast, in which his father Julius Loewenthal was a senior partner. The reason these letters survived for posterity is that he had specifically asked his mother to keep them as a record of his travels, for him to look back on after his return home to Belfast. The letters are a diary-like account of his travels and travel impressions, also containing little anecdotes, as well as more personal interactions with his mother to do with family and friends in Belfast and Dundee, as well as social chit chat. They were part of a regular correspondence between him and Jane.
