Book Watching Movies with Christian Eyes

Download or read book Watching Movies with Christian Eyes written by Susan Maluschka and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people don't like to watch movies or have time to do so. That's okay. This book is not about watching movies. It's about looking at how you live your life and what you want for your future. Movies are just stories about life so even if you don't watch them, you can still learn from them here. Some of life's most important lessons are learned through stories. What better way to hear these stories than on the big screen? Movies draw us in and touch our lives in ways we never imagined. The best part is that our supply is limitless. Here we have stories for all ages. As we watch the characters on the screen, we see ourselves; our need for love and understanding, hope for the future, or wish for revenge against someone who wronged us. We see how the characters on the screen deal with these emotions, but as Christians, how should we deal with ours? In this study, movies from different times and different genres offer us an opportunity to delve into the Bible and see the choices our heavenly Father wants us to make under similar circumstances. Each lesson will review one or more aspects of the movie and provide an opportunity for reflection or discussion. Bible passages are also referenced to enhance understanding. Now that we have this information, what do we do with it? Odds are that people around you every day are looking for this information as well. What a comfortable way to share your faith with your friends, co-workers, or neighbors while you discuss the latest flick. These Bible studies can be taught to a group of people or they can be done individually. Popcorn is optional.

Book World Religions and Cults Volume 1

Download or read book World Religions and Cults Volume 1 written by Bodie Hodge and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religions in today’s culture seem to be multiplying. Have you ever wondered why certain religions believe and practice what they do? Or how they view the Bible? This volume delves into these and other engaging questions, such as: How can a Christian witness to people in these religions? Do these other religions believe in creation and a Creator? How do we deal with these religions from a biblical authority perspective? Many religions and cults discussed in this first volume openly affirm that the Bible is true, but then something gets in their way. And there is a common factor every time—man’s fallible opinions. In one way or another the Bible gets demoted, reinterpreted, or completely ignored. Man’s ideas are used to throw the Bible’s clear teaching out the window while false teachings are promoted. This book is a must for laymen, church leaders, teachers, and students to understand the trends in our culture and around the world where certain religions dominate, helping you discern truth and guard your faith. When you understand a religion’s origins and teachings, you are in a better position to know how to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ as you take the good news to those in false religions.

  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demons! Nightmares with the Bible views demons through two lenses: that of western religion and that of cinema. Sketching out the long fear of demons in western history, including the Bible, Steve A. Wiggins moves on to analyze how popular movies inform our beliefs about demonic forces. Beginning with the idea of possession, he explores the portrayal of demons from ancient Mesopotamia and the biblical world (including in select extra-biblical texts), and then examines the portrayal of demons in popular horror franchises The Conjuring, The Amityville Horror, and Paranormal Activity. In the final chapter, Wiggins looks at movies that followed The Exorcist and offers new perspectives for viewing possession and exorcism. Written in non-technical language, this book is intended for anyone interested in how demons are perceived and how popular culture informs those perceptions.

Book Blockbusters and the Ancient World

Download or read book Blockbusters and the Ancient World written by Chris Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the release of Ridley Scott's Gladiator in 2000 the ancient world epic has experienced a revival in studio and audience interest. Building on existing scholarship on the Cold War epics of the 1950s-60s, including Ben-Hur, Spartacus and The Robe, this original study explores the current cycle of ancient world epics in cinema within the social and political climate created by September 11th 2001. Examining films produced against the backdrop of the War on Terror and subsequent invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, this book assesses the relationship between mainstream cinema and American society through depictions of the ancient world, conflict and faith. Davies explores how these films evoke depictions of the Second World War, the Vietnam War and the Western in portraying warfare in the ancient world, as well as discussing the influence of genre hybridisation, narration and reception theory. He questions the extent to which ancient world epics utilise allegory, analogy and allusion to parallel past and present in an industry often dictated by market forces. Featuring analysis of Alexander, Troy, 300, Centurion, The Eagle, The Passion of the Christ and more, this book offers new insight on the continued evolution of the ancient world epic in cinema.

Book Reforming Hollywood

    Book Details:
  • Author : William D. Romanowski
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2012-06-14
  • ISBN : 0199942587
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Reforming Hollywood written by William D. Romanowski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious Communication Association's Book of the Year Hollywood and Christianity often seem to be at war. Indeed, there is a long list of movies that have attracted religious condemnation, from Gone with the Wind with its notorious "damn," to The Life of Brian and The Last Temptation of Christ. But the reality, writes William Romanowski, has been far more complicated--and remarkable. In Reforming Hollywood, Romanowski, a leading historian of popular culture, explores the long and varied efforts of Protestants to influence the film industry. He shows how a broad spectrum of religious forces have played a role in Hollywood, from Presbyterians and Episcopalians to fundamentalists and evangelicals. Drawing on personal interviews and previously untouched sources, he describes how mainline church leaders lobbied filmmakers to promote the nation's moral health and, perhaps surprisingly, how they have by and large opposed government censorship, preferring instead self-regulation by both the industry and individual conscience. "It is this human choice," noted one Protestant leader, "that is the basis of our religion." Tensions with Catholics, too, have loomed large--many Protestant clergy feared the influence of the Legion of Decency more than Hollywood's corrupting power. Romanowski shows that the rise of the evangelical movement in the 1970s radically altered the picture, in contradictory ways. Even as born-again clergy denounced "Hollywood elites," major studios noted the emergence of a lucrative evangelical market. 20th Century-Fox formed FoxFaith to go after the "Passion dollar," and Disney took on evangelical Philip Anschutz as a partner to bring The Chronicles of Narnia to the big screen. William Romanowski is an award-winning commentator on the intersection of religion and popular culture. Reforming Hollywood is his most revealing, provocative, and groundbreaking work on this vital area of American society.
