Download or read book Initial boundary Value Problems and the Navier Stokes Equations written by Heinz-Otto Kreiss and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This book provides an introduction to the vast subject of initial and initial-boundary value problems for PDEs, with an emphasis on applications to parabolic and hyperbolic systems. The Navier-Stokes equations for compressible and incompressible flows are taken as an example to illustrate the results. Researchers and graduate students in applied mathematics and engineering will find Initial-Boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equations invaluable. The subjects addressed in the book, such as the well-posedness of initial-boundary value problems, are of frequent interest when PDEs are used in modeling or when they are solved numerically. The reader will learn what well-posedness or ill-posedness means and how it can be demonstrated for concrete problems. There are many new results, in particular on the Navier-Stokes equations. The direct approach to the subject still gives a valuable introduction to an important area of applied analysis.

It will be very useful for promoting further study on some important problems in the future.
Download or read book Difference Methods for Initial Boundary Value Problems and Flow Around Bodies written by You-lan Zhu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the appearance of computers, numerical methods for discontinuous solutions of quasi-linear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations have been among the most important research subjects in numerical analysis. The authors have developed a new difference method (named the singularity-separating method) for quasi-linear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. Its most important feature is that it possesses a high accuracy even for problems with singularities such as schocks, contact discontinuities, rarefaction waves and detonations. Besides the thorough description of the method itself, its mathematical foundation (stability-convergence theory of difference schemes for initial-boundary-value hyperbolic problems) and its application to supersonic flow around bodies are discussed. Further, the method of lines and its application to blunt body problems and conical flow problems are described in detail. This book should soon be an important working basis for both graduate students and researchers in the field of partial differential equations as well as in mathematical physics.

Download or read book Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws written by Alberto Bressan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a self-contained introduction to the mathematical theory of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, with particular emphasis on the study of discontinuous solutions, characterized by the appearance of shock waves. This area has experienced substantial progress in very recent years thanks to the introduction of new techniques, in particular the front tracking algorithm and the semigroup approach. These techniques provide a solution to the long standing open problems of uniqueness and stability of entropy weak solutions. This volume is the first to present a comprehensive account of these new, fundamental advances. It also includes a detailed analysis of the stability and convergence of the front tracking algorithm. A set of problems, with varying difficulty is given at the end of each chapter to verify and expand understanding of the concepts and techniques previously discussed. For researchers, this book will provide an indispensable reference to the state of the art in the field of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws.

Book excerpt: This monograph describes global propagation of regular nonlinear hyperbolic waves described by first-order quasilinear hyperbolic systems in one dimension. The exposition is clear, concise, and unfolds systematically beginning with introductory material and leading to the original research of the authors. Topics are motivated with a number of physical examples from the areas of elastic materials, one-dimensional gas dynamics, and waves. Download or read book Partial Differential Equations in China written by Chaohao Gu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years there has been a fruitful exchange of expertise on the subject of partial differential equations (PDEs) between mathematicians from the People's Republic of China and the rest of the world. The goal of this collection of papers is to summarize and introduce the historical progress of the development of PDEs in China from the 1950s to the 1980s. The results presented here were mainly published before the 1980s, but, having been printed in the Chinese language, have not reached the wider audience they deserve. Topics covered include, among others, nonlinear hyperbolic equations, nonlinear elliptic equations, nonlinear parabolic equations, mixed equations, free boundary problems, minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds, microlocal analysis and solitons. For mathematicians and physicists interested in the historical development of PDEs in the People's Republic of China.

Download or read book Nonlinear Wave Equations written by Tatsien Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on nonlinear wave equations, which are of considerable significance from both physical and theoretical perspectives. It also presents complete results on the lower bound estimates of lifespan (including the global existence), which are established for classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of nonlinear wave equations with small initial data in all possible space dimensions and with all possible integer powers of nonlinear terms. Further, the book proposes the global iteration method, which offers a unified and straightforward approach for treating these kinds of problems. Purely based on the properties of solut ions to the corresponding linear problems, the method simply applies the contraction mapping principle.
