Book The Northwest Fisheries Science Center s West Coast Groundfish Bottom Trawl Survey

Download or read book The Northwest Fisheries Science Center s West Coast Groundfish Bottom Trawl Survey written by Aimee A. Keller and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on the abundance and distribution of most Pacific Coast groundfish is obtained principally by bottom trawl surveys. The annual bottom trawl survey in this region is conducted by the NMFS Northwest Fisheries Science Center from four chartered fishing vessels that each conduct over 150 trawls during early summer to early autumn, and cover trawlable habitats from the U.S.--Canada to the U.S.--Mexico borders, at depths of 55 m to 1,280 m. This document covers the history of this survey, including descriptions of predecessor surveys in the region, statistical design, and survey protocols. Book Bottom Trawl Surveys in Prince William Sound 2022 to 2024

Download or read book Bottom Trawl Surveys in Prince William Sound 2022 to 2024 written by Wyatt J. Rhea-Fournier and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game large-mesh bottom trawl survey is to estimate abundance of Tanner crab, Chionoecetes bairdi, and biomass of groundfish species in the Prince William Sound Area. District specific abundance estimates will be generated for mature-size male Tanner crab to assess if minimum abundance thresholds to open a commercial fishery have been met. Male Tanner crab biological measurements will be collected for estimating size at morphological maturity and mature male crab will be tagged for observing seasonal movement. Biomass estimates of groundfish species, with an emphasis on Walleye pollock, Gadus chalcogrammus, will be generated for the historical trawl survey area to achieve research goals for the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustees Council funded project number 22220203.

Book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat

Download or read book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.
