This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book Building the Case for Health Literacy

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press

Download or read book Building the Case for Health Literacy written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-08-26 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of health literacy has evolved from one focused on individuals to one that recognizes that health literacy is multidimensional. While communicating in a health literate manner is important for everyone, it is particularly important when communicating with those with limited health literacy who also experience more serious medication errors, higher rates of hospitalization and use of the emergency room, poor health outcomes, and increased mortality. Over the past decade, research has shown that health literacy interventions can significantly impact various areas including health care costs, outcomes, and health disparities. To understand the extent to which health literacy has been shown to be effective at contributing to the Quadruple Aim of improving the health of communities, providing better care, providing affordable care, and improving the experience of the health care team, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a public workshop on building the case for health literacy. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop, and highlights important lessons about the role of health literacy in meeting the Quadruple Aim, case studies of organizations that have adopted health literacy, and discussions among the different stakeholders involved in making the case for health literacy.

This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines current diets to help you make decisions about your eating style as well as taking a look at sleep patterns in association with our overall health. Health and physical education warrant a bigger role in our children’s overall health and well being. One of the chapters is entitled: Games People Play, which focuses on games you played growing up. Will Shelton is deeply concerned that some neighborhoods, including parks are too violent for youth to play in. He presents some innovative ideas that can help curtail violence in neighborhoods. “We need to bring back pride as a core value in some neighborhoods so youth have a vested interest in their respective neighborhoods, by creating jobs, safe parks and recreational centers, better teachers, principals, other school staff, school curriculum, mentorship programs, rites of passage programs, violence prevention programs, better training of police and dramatically stop how guns, drugs and other weapons enter neighborhoods.” ~Will Shelton Will Shelton’s book Investing in Your Health... You’ll Love the Return is an insightful and innovative look at our personal health status and how we can improve it. It examines why we eat the foods we select. It answers the following questions and so much more: What can we specifically do to defeat the #1 Killer of Americans using empirical data? Is healthcare a right or privilege? What are the factors that are affecting our health? What cellular “Master Switch” can be turned on by eating the right kinds of foods to prevent diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other diseases? How do you unlock the subconscious mind to health, wealth and contentment? Why Financial Principles are a requirement for total health happiness? Why is generational health and wealth a vital legacy, in terms of passing the Torch of Health and Wealth to this generation of youth? How does the Glycemic Index help lower sugar intake? How can Stress Busters techniques and activities help with stress? You are a cornucopia of endless treasure. Now is the time to claim your treasure by Investing In Your Health... Book Green Healthcare Institutions

Download or read book Green Healthcare Institutions written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-06-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green Healthcare Institutions : Health, Environment, and Economics, Workshop Summary is based on the ninth workshop in a series of workshops sponsored by the Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine since the roundtable began meeting in 1998. When choosing workshops and activities, the roundtable looks for areas of mutual concern and also areas that need further research to develop a strong environmental science background. This workshop focused on the environmental and health impacts related to the design, construction, and operations of healthcare facilities, which are part of one of the largest service industries in the United States. Healthcare institutions are major employers with a considerable role in the community, and it is important to analyze this significant industry. The environment of healthcare facilities is unique; it has multiple stakeholders on both sides, as the givers and the receivers of care. In order to provide optimal care, more research is needed to determine the impacts of the built environment on human health. The scientific evidence for embarking on a green building agenda is not complete, and at present, scientists have limited information. Green Healthcare Institutions : Health, Environment, and Economics, Workshop Summary captures the discussions and presentations by the speakers and participants; they identified the areas in which additional research is needed, the processes by which change can occur, and the gaps in knowledge.
