Book One dimensional Bose Einstein Condensates in Micro traps

Download or read book One dimensional Bose Einstein Condensates in Micro traps written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel wire-based magneto-optical trap has been demonstrated which enables to collect up to 3x10^8 cold atoms close to the reflecting surface of an atom chip. These atoms are subsequently transferred to micro-traps generated by wires mounted on the atom chip and Bose-Einstein condensation has been achieved. The Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) created in the micro-traps form in the one-dimensional Thomas-Fermi regime. The cross-over between three-dimensional and one-dimensional BECs has been investigated by monitoring the transverse size of the BEC after ballistic expansion. Good agreement to theory has been found. As an application, one-dimensional BECs have been used to implement a microscopic magnetic field sensor. This sensor enables field measurements in a region which is not accessible for today's state-of-the-art sensors. A field sensitivity of 4 nT at a spatial resolution of 3 micrometer has been demonstrated. To investigate the phase-properties of a one-dimensional BEC, coherent splitting of a one-dimensional BEC has been achieved and interferometry on an atom chip has been demonstrated.

Book Microtraps and Waveguides for Bose Einstein Condensates

Download or read book Microtraps and Waveguides for Bose Einstein Condensates written by Aaron Edward Leanhardt and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) Partially condensed atomic vapors were confined by a combination of gravitational and magnetic forces. They were adiabatically decompressed, by weakening the gravito-magnetic trap to a mean frequency of 1 Hz, then evaporatively reduced in size to 2500 atoms. This lowered the peak condensate density to 5 x 1010 atoms/cm3 and cooled the entire cloud in all three dimensions to a kinetic temperature of 450±80 pK.

Part II contains research reviews that provide an integrated account of the current state in an active area of research where atom chips are employed, and explore possible routes of future progress. Depending on the subject, the length of the review and the relative weight of the 'review' and 'outlook' parts vary, since the authors include their own personal view and style in their accounts.

Book Scalable Microchip Ion Traps for Quantum Computation

Download or read book Scalable Microchip Ion Traps for Quantum Computation written by Stephan Schulz and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of scalable microfabricated ion traps with multiple segments for the realization of quantum computing is a challenging task in quantum information science. The research on the design, development, fabrication, and operation of the first European micro-trap is shown in this thesis. This chip-based micro-trap is an outstanding candidate towards experiments for a future quantum processor with trapped single ions. In the experiments coherent quantum state manipulation is demonstrated, and sideband cooling to the motional ground state is realized. The heating rate is determined and the applicability for quantum computation is proven. Furthermore planar trap designs are investigated - a planar microparticle trap was built and operated. A linear microfabricated planar trap was operated, showing the proof of concept of a novel designed and fabricated Y-shaped planar trap.

Book Experimental Issues in Coherent Quantum State Manipulation of Trapped Atomic Ions

Download or read book Experimental Issues in Coherent Quantum State Manipulation of Trapped Atomic Ions written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for, and limitations to, the generation of entangled states of trapped atomic ions are examined. As much as possible, state manipulations are described in terms of quantum logic operations since the conditional dynamics implicit in quantum logic is central to the creation of entanglement. Keeping with current interest, some experimental issues in the proposal for trapped-ion quantum computation by J.I. Cirac and P. Zoller (University of Innsbruck) are discussed. Several possible decoherence mechanisms are examined and what may be the more important of these are identified. Some potential applications for entangled states of trapped-ions which lie outside the immediate realm of quantum computation are also discussed.

Book A Bose Einstein Condensate Coupled to a Micromechanical Oscillator

Download or read book A Bose Einstein Condensate Coupled to a Micromechanical Oscillator written by David Hunger and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2010 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultracold neutral atoms can be trapped and coherently manipulated close to a surface using chip-based magnetic microtraps. This opens the possibility of studying interactions between atoms and on-chip solid-state systems such as micro- and nanostructured mechanical oscillators. This thesis reports experiments, where a controlled coupling between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a micromechanical oscillator is realized for the first time. The interaction relies on surface forces experienced by the atoms trapped at about 1 micrometer distance from the mechanical structure. The surface forces are used to resonantly couple the mechanical motion of the oscillator to collective motion of the atoms. Coupling via surface forces does not require magnets, electrodes, or mirrors on the oscillator and could thus be employed to couple atoms to molecular-scale oscillators such as carbon nanotubes. In the long-term, the toolbox for quantum manipulation of ultracold atoms could be employed to read out, cool, and coherently manipulate the quantum state of a mechanical oscillator. The thesis discusses three different scenarios that could enable atom-oscillator coupling at the quantum level.

Book Enhanced Optical and Electric Manipulation of a Quantum Gas of KRb Molecules

Download or read book Enhanced Optical and Electric Manipulation of a Quantum Gas of KRb Molecules written by Jacob P. Covey and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes significant advances in experimental capabilities using ultracold polar molecules. While ultracold polar molecules are an idyllic platform for quantum chemistry and quantum many-body physics, molecular samples prior to this work failed to be quantum degenerate, were plagued by chemical reactions, and lacked any evidence of many-body physics. These limitations were overcome by loading molecules into an optical lattice to control and eliminate collisions and hence chemical reactions. This led to observations of many-body spin dynamics using rotational states as a pseudo-spin, and the realization of quantum magnetism with long-range interactions and strong many-body correlations. Further, a 'quantum synthesis' technique based on atomic insulators allowed the author to increase the filling fraction of the molecules in the lattice to 30%, a substantial advance which corresponds to an entropy-per-molecule entering the quantum degenerate regime and surpasses the so-called percolations threshold where long-range spin propagation is expected. Lastly, this work describes the design, construction, testing, and implementation of a novel apparatus for controlling polar molecules. It provides access to: high-resolution molecular detection and addressing; large, versatile static electric fields; and microwave-frequency electric fields for driving rotational transitions with arbitrary polarization. Further, the yield of molecules in this apparatus has been demonstrated to exceed 10^5, which is a substantial improvement beyond the prior apparatus, and an excellent starting condition for direct evaporative cooling to quantum degeneracy.
