Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I have not tried to paint the portrait of a man, but merely to present a personality and hazard a guess as to the motivation that makes Santa Claus the wondrous figure he is — a figure who more than any other exemplifies the beauty of selflessness.” — Seabury Quinn Drawing upon the original Christian legends that coalesced over centuries into the familiar, jolly form of Saint Nicholas, pulp fiction pioneer Seabury Quinn weaves a spellbinding new origin for this most beloved of children’s icons in his classic novella Roads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three provocative exposés from a National Jewish Book Award–winning journalist address the CIA’s recruitment of Nazis and use of psychological warfare. The Splendid Blond Beast: This groundbreaking investigation into the CIA’s post–World War II liberation and recruitment of Nazi war criminals—including the pivotal role played by CIA director Allen Dulles—traces the roots not only of US government malfeasance, but of mass murder as an instrument of financial gain and state power, from the Armenian genocide during World War I to Hitler’s Holocaust through the practice of genocide today. “Revelatory and shocking.” —Kirkus Reviews Blowback: The true story of how US intelligence organizations employed Nazi war criminals in clandestine warfare and propaganda against the USSR, anticolonial revolutionaries, and progressive movements worldwide that were claimed to be Soviet pawns. “The story is one that needs to be told, and Blowback makes a major contribution to its telling, supplementing a thorough collation of known cases with ample new research.” —The New York Times Science of Coercion: Drawing on long-classified documents from the Pentagon, the CIA, and other national security agencies, Simpson exposes secret government-funded research into psychological warfare and reveals that many of the most respected pioneers in the field of communication science were knowingly complicit as their findings were employed for the purposes of propaganda, subversion, intimidation, and counterinsurgency during the Cold War era. “An intriguing picture of the relations between state power and the intellectual community.” —Noam Chomsky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Book Race

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ruth Benedict
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2019-10-15
  • ISBN : 0820356786
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Race written by Ruth Benedict and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In science, race can be a useful concept-for specific, limited purposes. When race, as a way of classifying people, is drafted into the service of politics, religion, or any belief system, then danger follows. That is the focus of this classic repudiation of racism, which is as readable and timely now as when it first appeared. Race: Science and Politics was first published in 1940, in response to the global rise of fascism and its pseudoscientific rationales for marginalizing and even exterminating "inferior" people. Writing for a general audience, Ruth Benedict ranges across the history of Western thought and research on race to illuminate rifts between the facts of race and the claims of racism. Rather than take issue only with the Nazis and their allies, Benedict set out to show that all racist beliefs are objectively groundless-and that is the key to the book's ongoing relevance. The book's bonus content includes The Races of Mankind, a pamphlet-length distillation of the book with its own controversial role in dismantling racist theory. This edition also includes a new foreword by Judith Schachter. An anthropologist, historian, and Benedict biographer, Schachter discusses the book's importance for current readers. Also included is a foreword by anthropologist Margaret Mead from 1958, a time when colonial ties around the world were unravelling and civil rights unrest was a daily occurrence in the United States.

Book Marilyn Monroe Joe DiMaggio Love In Japan Korea Beyond

Download or read book Marilyn Monroe Joe DiMaggio Love In Japan Korea Beyond written by Jennifer Jean Miller and published by J.J. Avenue Productions. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio is a timeless tale. Both of these legends had extraordinary careers in their individual fields, as well as remarkable existences. This book chronicles each of their lives, from the days before they met, until that magical night in 1952 when their paths finally crossed. Their lives would never be the same after that. Though their marriage lasted for nine months, their love endured beyond those years and Joe’s heart yearned for no one else, even at his deathbed thirty-seven years after her untimely passing. This account shares of their love and focuses on their marriage in 1954, and their trip to Japan and her trip to Korea, during the nearly one month time span that the couple was in the Far East together. A segment of the author’s collection of rare and unpublished photographs of both stars are featured within this Google edition, some never before seen since they were taken approximately sixty years ago in Japan and Korea. Due to file size constraints with file delivery via Google that inhibits image quality, the print version of the book has the expanded selection of photos from the author's collection, as well as memorabilia from both of the stars. This book weaves in elements about baseball, entertainment, the military, the tragedies of stardom, and above all, the love Marilyn and Joe shared. The story told here unveils other characters in the casts of both of their lives, including interviews with family members of Marilyn Monroe, headed by Marilyn’s second cousin, Jason Edward Kennedy. This book begins to also debunk the myths and propaganda about the life and death of Marilyn Monroe. Additionally, controversy within Joe’s final days is also explored. Marilyn Monroe & Joe DiMaggio – Love In Japan, Korea & Beyond, is the first book in the series endorsed by MarilynMonroeFamily.com, the website run by the relatives of William Marion Hogan, Marilyn Monroe’s great-uncle.

Book Reflections on Kurt G del

Download or read book Reflections on Kurt G del written by Hao Wang and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1990-03-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newton/Descartes. Einstein/Gödel. The seventeenth century had its scientific and philosophical geniuses. Why shouldn't ours have them as well? Kurt Gödel was indisputably one of the greatest thinkers of our time, and in this first extended treatment of his life and work, Hao Wang, who was in close contact with Gödel in his last years, brings out the full subtlety of Gödel's ideas and their connection with grand themes in the history of mathematics and philosophy. The subjects he covers include the completeness of elementary logic, the limits of formalization, the problem of evidence, the concept of set, the philosophy of mathematics, time, and relativity theory, metaphysics and religion, as well as general ideas on philosophy as a worldview. Wang, whose reflections on his colleague also serve to clarify his own philosophical thoughts, distinguishes his ideas from those of Gödel's and on points of agreement develops Gödel's views further. The book provides a generous array of information on and interpretation of the two main phases of Gödel's career - the years between 1924 and 1939 at the University of Vienna, which were marked by intense mathematical creativity, and the period from 1940 to his death in 1978, during which he was affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, a time in which Gödel's interests steadily shifted from questions of logic to metaphysics. And it also examines Gödel's relations with the Vienna Circle, his philosophical differences with Carnap and Wittgenstein, the intimate and mutually fruitful friendship with Einstein, and the periodic bouts of depression for which Gödel was hospitalized a number of times over the course of his life. A Bradford Book.
