Download or read book Fragile Images written by Mirjam Rajner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fragile Images: Jews and Art in Yugoslavia, 1918-1945, Mirjam Rajner traces the lives and creativity of seven artists of Jewish origin. The artists - Moša Pijade, Daniel Kabiljo, Adolf Weiller, Bora Baruh, Daniel Ozmo, Ivan Rein and Johanna Lutzer - were characterized by multiple and changeable identities: nationalist and universalist, Zionist and Sephardic, communist and cosmopolitan. These fluctuating identities found expression in their art, as did their wartime fate as refugees, camp inmates, partisans and survivors. A wealth of newly-discovered images, diaries and letters highlight this little-known aspect of Jewish life and art in Yugoslavia, illuminating a turbulent era that included integration into a newly-founded country, the catastrophe of the Holocaust, and renewal in its aftermath. interview with the author

Download or read book Classical Feedback Control with Nonlinear Multi Loop Systems written by Boris J. Lurie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Feedback Control with Nonlinear Multi-Loop Systems describes the design of high-performance feedback control systems, emphasizing the frequency-domain approach widely used in practical engineering. It presents design methods for high-order nonlinear single- and multi-loop controllers with efficient analog and digital implementations. Bode integrals are employed to estimate the available system performance and to determine the ideal frequency responses that maximize the disturbance rejection and feedback bandwidth. Nonlinear dynamic compensators provide global stability and improve transient responses. This book serves as a unique text for an advanced course in control system engineering, and as a valuable reference for practicing engineers competing in today’s industrial environment.

Download or read book Remembering Forward written by Museum Ludwig and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remembering Forward presents works by nine of the most prominent Australian Aboriginal artists: Paddy Bedford, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Queenie McKenzie, Dorothy Napangardi, Rover Thomas, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri and Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula. Their works are situated in, and generate, a peculiar tension between traditional and modern and past and present. On the one hand, they usually take as their subject the so called 'Dreamtime' of prehistory from which myths of the earth's and humankind's creation have been handed down. In that regard they are deeply traditional. On the other, these artists have radically changed their medium and method of art-making over the last forty years. Inherited practices of sand- and body-painting have been transformed such that the paintings are executed in acrylic on canvas or other portable media. These changes afforded the artists entry to the global art market. Thus they have adjusted to address an outside public and keep the images free of those parts of the Dreamings that, in their own culture, are reserved for the initiated.

Download or read book Impossible Images written by Shelley Hornstein and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impossible Images brings together a distinguished group of contributors, including artists, photographers, cultural critics, and historians, to analyze the ways in which the Holocaust has been represented in and through paintings, architecture, photographs, museums, and monuments. Exploring frequently neglected aspects of contemporary art after the Holocaust, the volume demonstrates how visual culture informs Jewish memory, and makes clear that art matters in contemporary Jewish studies. Accepting that knowledge is culturally constructed, Impossible Images makes explicit the ways in which context matters. It shows how the places where an artist works shape what is produced, in what ways the space in which a work of art is exhibited and how it is named influences what is seen or not seen, and how calling attention to certain details in a visual work, such as a gesture, a color, or an icon, can change the meaning assigned to the work as a whole. Written accessibly for a general readership and those interested in art and art history, the volume also includes 20 color plates from leading artists Alice Lok Cahana, Judy Chicago, Debbie Teicholz, and Mindy Weisel.

Book excerpt: KEYNOTE: This new edition of Chagall's beloved series of prints inspired by the Old Testament recreates the vivid beauty of the artist's inspired work. "I did not see the Bible, I dreamed it .... It has always seemed to me ... the greatest source of poetry of all time." Marc Chagall Marc Chagall was captivated by the Old Testament, and its stories and heroes were a major influence on his work. First published in 1960 as a limited edition artist's book, this series of lithographs depicts some of the Bible's most beloved stories, including the Creation, the expulsion from Paradise, the rivalry of Cain and Abel, Hagar's escape to the desert, and Job's travails. Like all of his work, Chagall's depictions of these stories are filled with colour and bold strokes, symbolism and tradition, humanity and poetry. This new edition of Chagall's masterwork series of drawings adheres to the original edition in structure and design, with marvellously reproduced colour prints interspersed with black-and-white illustrations. The book includes philosopher Gaston Bachelard's original introduction and additional commentary by Beatrice Hernad. An enchanting introduction to the Old Testament, this book makes the perfect gift for Chagall enthusiasts and bibliophiles alike. AUTHOR: Beatrice Hernad is a librarian in the manuscripts department of the Bavarian State Library in Munich, Germany. She has published widely on Russian art and literature. Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962) was a French philosopher, who made contributions in the fields of poetics and the philosophy of science. ILLUSTRATIONS: 124 reproductions *
