Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the life of a giant in inorganic chemistry and key trends in his science, Boranes and Beyond follows Hawthorne from his mid-American origins to the halls of Harvard and UCLA and back again. It naturally details the accomplishments in his lab. This book is a fascinating mixture of science and autobiography. Prof. Hawthorne won the Priestley Medal, the highest award of the American Chemical Society, for his pioneering work in elucidating the chemistry of boron. He has chronicled in this book the developments in his lab which ultimately led to this achievement. Not content to rest on his laurels, after retiring from UCLA Prof. Hawthorne explored the use of boron in biomedicine and directed the International Institute of Nano & Molecular Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Book Boranes and Metallaboranes

Download or read book Boranes and Metallaboranes written by Catherine E. Housecroft and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise introduction to boranes and metalloboranes employs an informal and straightforward style. The author establishes facts first, and rationalization and theories follow. Ideas of cluster bonding are presented, and the author surveys different approaches to the bonding in clusters, emphasizing the use of frontier molecule orbitals and the construction of clusters from fragments. The application of spectroscopic techniques to the elucidation of cluster structure is discussed, with an emphasis on multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. The second edition includes an update on structural data for boranes and their anions. Sections on spectroscopy and the reactivity of metalloboranes have been slightly expanded and references have been updated.

Book Comprehensive Organic Functional Group Transformations

Download or read book Comprehensive Organic Functional Group Transformations written by Alan R. Katritzky and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-03-21 with total page 1380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Volume, containing 24 chapters devoted to carbon attached by single bonds to two heteroatoms, the reader will find several chapters reviewing the synthesis of familiar functional groups, notably acetals, dithioacetals, aminals and the various mixed species. The derivatives with tetracoordinated (saturated) carbon are described in Part I and those, eg. ketene acetals, of tricoordinated carbon in Part II. However, the treatment is comprehensive and the authors have uncovered much fascinating chemistry concerning less familiar groups, including some like geminal halohydrins, halo amines and diols that are often unstable. Again, a surprisingly large number of compounds having two metals attached to the same carbon have been located in the literature, and the abundance of phosphorus derivatives, eg. those with geminal nitrogen functions, reflects their importance as biologically active species and as intermediates in synthesis. Part III consists of a single, short chapter describing dicoordinate carbon (carbenes) and examples of carbon cations, anions and radicals. Here the treatment is deliberately selective since throughout the work as a whole emphasis is placed on the synthesis of isolable species rather than the transient intermediates of organic reactions.

  • Author : Earl Muetterties
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 032314649X
  • Pages : 545 pages

Download or read book Boron Hydride Chemistry written by Earl Muetterties and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boron Hydride Chemistry covers the significant contributions of boron hydride research in the subjects of bonding, structure, and stereochemistry. This book contains 12 chapters that illustrate the merging of certain areas of boron hydride chemistry with other disciplines, such as organic, organometallic, and transition metal chemistry. After providing an overview of the general geometric, stereochemical, and dynamic stereochemical features of boron hydrides, this book goes on exploring the bonding theory and theoretical research on boron hydrides, with an emphasis on boron hydrides that have open polyhedral structures. These topics are followed by discussions on gas phase and solution reactions of borane and substituted boranes. A chapter focuses on the chemistry of cations containing boron atoms bonded to hydrogen. The remaining chapters examine the syntheses, structures, bonding, spectral properties, and chemistry of specific boron hydrides, including borazines, closo-boron hydrides, carboranes, icosahedral carboranes, and close- and nido-heteroboranes. Inorganic chemists and researchers, teachers, and undergraduate inorganic chemistry students will find this book invaluable.

Book Chemistry of the Elements

Download or read book Chemistry of the Elements written by N. N. Greenwood and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this innovative textbook first appeared in 1984 it rapidly became a great success throughout the world and has already been translated into several European and Asian languages. Now the authors have completely revised and updated the text, including more than 2000 new literature references to work published since the first edition. No page has been left unaltered but the novel features which proved so attractive have been retained. The book presents a balanced, coherent and comprehensive account of the chemistry of the elements for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This crucial central area of chemistry is full of ingenious experiments, intriguing compounds and exciting new discoveries. The authors specifically avoid the term `inorganic chemistry' since this evokes an outmoded view of chemistry which is no longer appropriate in the final decade of the 20th century. Accordingly, the book covers not only the 'inorganic' chemistry of the elements, but also analytical, theoretical, industrial, organometallic, bio-inorganic and other cognate areas of chemistry. The authors have broken with recent tradition in the teaching of their subject and adopted a new and highly successful approach based on descriptive chemistry. The chemistry of the elements is still discussed within the context of an underlying theoretical framework, giving cohesion and structure to the text, but at all times the chemical facts are emphasized. Students are invited to enter the exciting world of chemical phenomena with a sound knowledge and understanding of the subject, to approach experimentation with an open mind, and to assess observations reliably. This is a book that students will not only value during their formal education, but will keep and refer to throughout their careers as chemists. - Completely revised and updated - Unique approach to the subject - More comprehensive than competing titles
